Guy's and Gals,
The boat is on the market and have prices on the Jayco Hawk and Eagle with many extras and was wishing to get some opinions on must have accessories? We have listed the following to be added to the camper.....Also, for those that have them which layout is more user friendly and has more storage (if any) Hawk or Eagle. I currently prefer the Hawk with the galley style kitchen. Also, do they do wind up TV antennas for these type of vans? The two prices I have are honestly below what I expected, awaiting on a couple more to come in......
Outback Pack
Solar Pack 120watt
Battery but would like dual setup, with Anderson plug charge cable to the vehicle.
Bed Flys
Roof Rack
Air conditioning
Microwave
Alko-Drop jacks
Bag Awning
DVD/CD player and speakers
Bumper Bar
2 Extra Jerry can holders - on rear bumper
OZ Hitch off road coupling
These are what we are currently looking at and any assistance would be greatly appreciated......

Hi,
We have the offroad hawk. I was talked out of the BBQ by the sales rep and I'm glad. The only thing I really wish we'd done was extend the drawbar so it could be set up while still hitched, handy on those overnight quick set ups.
An external water tap is handy as well, that way you don't have to go inside to wash hands etc
cheers

Extended Draw bar, very good idea.......Outside tap another but I should be able to do that later myself. Thanks for the tips......

If your dead set on the bagged awning, make sure it is the new design with a bigger bag (I was shown this at the Penrith show and its much easier to pack up). Oh and go the LED tail lights for a bit of bling ;D ;D

We have an Outback Eagle
Its just the 2 of us ( and the 2 little dogs )
We like the 2 different areas for seating
I think the storage would be pretty much the same in either model
It really is which ever floats your boat so to speak
Some things we added
Innerspring mattress, really quite nice
Hot Water System with outside shower, extra water tank and extra gas bottle ( I think this is around 2k but really well worth it )
Gas Bayonet fitting to front of chassis for Weber Q
Kitchen side awning
Would have liked
Battery monitor
Water monitor
water tap to chassis
Talked out off
The External BBQ, glad we were
DVD CD Player, quite costly when you think about it.
Check out solar elsewhere, I think that Jayco are expensive
Good luck and I am sure you will be happy with the choice you make
Richard

We went the Hawk over the Eagle as the kitchen layout of the Hawk keeps little kids away from the hotplates when cooking etc if the stove and burners are being used the kids have to walk within cm's of them to get to the main lounge/ table and rear bed area.

Thanks mate, that was my thinking also. By the way I was in your shop Thursday last week to buy a Super Charge All-Rounder battery as my aux battery dropped a cell......Thanks.....
-
ok cool mate, I was like a headless chook last week. >:D
The other thing we liked about the Hawk kitchen layout is it keeps everything seperate from the lounge seating area, when cooking, you're not sort of getting in other peoples, kids way like you may in the Eagle if they want to come and go from the table area when someone is cooking.
Our 2 kids are old enough now to be careful around a hot stove, but it still doesn't mean they sit still for more than 5 seconds. Especially if it is wet outside and all your cooking is being done inside with wrestless kids.
-
I agree that the Hawk layout is probably better suited to families with younger kids

Yep, that's what I was thinking as ours are 3 and 2 years old....Hence liking the Jayco style camper for convenience.......

Mate, Just sent a PM about custom stone guards........

The Eagle has a wardrobe that folds down, but the Hawk has slightly more cupboards down low. I also like the kitchen configuration of the Hawk. One difference that upsets some is you need to climb up onto the queen bed in the Hawk, whereas in the Eagle you step up via the lounge.
-
Buy a Goldstream ;D
-
Ours is a flaming and the queen bed can be accessed by climbing on the lounge. But the "kids" bed is the double which is at the kitchen end. They couldn't get in to bed until I made them a ladder.
-
I thought my computer screen was playing tricks on my eyes Teabag when I saw that you're looking at a Jayco >:D
We went the Hawk for the same reasons as 2Brutal as the layout does seem to suit better with young ones, its almost like having two seperate living areas.
Good luck with your decision mate.

We have an outback eagle as we preferred the layout and take it offroad.
Have single battery that I have relocated outside that runs lights and pump for more than a week when bush camped.
Have bagged bed end flys (A must IMO), bagged awning and full annex (used annex a total of once), roof rails that I have taken off (cant put anything heavy on top and operate roof) and a poly block coupling. The outback models when I got mine came standard with a rear bumper but only rated to carry the spare wheel, although that may have changed.
If I was buying again today the only other extras I would consider is a longer draw bar.
Opted not to have Solar, air con, Microwave, DVD/Cd player, HWS, BBQ on side of van and do not miss or regret not getting these extras.
I have made several modifications to our camper to make it more suited to off road travel.
An important point to consider IMO when choosing extras, particularly second water tanks or provision for extra jerry cans is they all increase the tare weight. The difference between a standard empty camper and a fully laden camper is 252kgs for an eagle and 277kgs for a hawk. This is not a lot when you consider a full water tank adds 82 kg, then there's the clothes, the shoe collection, food, sundries and of course the drinks.
We know what we would rather forgo when out camping and yet I reckon we often start out a tad overloaded.
Regards

Some good points to consider for the long run Rebs.
Would have loved to go the longer drawbar, but will only just get it in my Garage as is but a great option.
-
We also compared the Hawk and Eagle and went for the Hawk with it's galley at one end and it's lounge and table at the end. Even without young kids, it means that I don't get in Cook's way when she's busy.
We added the Alko legs, Treg Hitch, battery and a second gas bottle which we use to run a $100 Aldi hooded BBQ/stove inside the annex & outside the van via a longer hose. It stows in the same external side locker but is not limited to being used right up against the van like the slide-out one would be.
End flies and annex were included in the deal. I fitted a sink pump (very handy) and inverter myself.
Handy hint; On our last outing we stayed at a caravan park and took our small microwave with us. The second bed wasn't being used so the microwave sat up there on a 2m2 sheet of masonite. The masonite doesn't take up any room, turns the bed into a large and stable shelf and can be stowed under the matteress when the bed needs to be used for sleeping

Do you take it to the Gay Mardi Gras?
-
I just took delivery of my new Flamingo ST.
Here's what I did with my van.
Outback Pack
YES
Solar Pack 120watt
Went 185W but not from Jayco.
Battery but would like dual setup, with Anderson plug charge cable to the vehicle.
Did the same. The Anderson plug is worth it!
Bed Flys
YES
Roof Rack
MAYBE... If they can find the missing parts before I leave :D
Air conditioning
NO... Remote power's my issue here
Microwave
Got rid of my Jayco one... too big. Got a more compact KMart one and it's fine.
Alko-Drop jacks
YES and good to have.
Bag Awning
A wind-out one, but only used on the road.
DVD/CD player and speakers
Too expensive
Bumper Bar
N/A
2 Extra Jerry can holders - on rear bumper
N/A
OZ Hitch off road coupling
No, as have too many other things to tow at home.
Other changes:
Outside Shower
Had hot and cold taps mounted on the Bumper Bar.
Kitchen Sink
Resealed it myself
Floor and Bench Tops
Clear siliconed the floor and bench top joins.
240V
Added a 1000W Powerteck 240V inverter and safety switch
External Lights
Fitted a switch, near the door, to allow me to turn on the white running lights when camped. The cable is kept in the boot and then plugged into the trailer plug when I get to the camp. Rarely used, but is handy around the van at night. From inside the van, I can illuminate 360 around the van. Worth it's weight in gold when the dog barks :D
-
Thanks for all the handy hints, keep them coming........
Getting some valued info.....

Hi,
I have to disagree(politely) with some of the other opinions, I prefer the Eagle layout, we prefer a seperate dinning and lounging area with kids. We just spent a week at the snow with the kids, and because of the weather were inside most of the time. We had no problems with space or cooking during that time. To be honest though, on most trips we usually eat outside so its not a factor. The wardrobe is handy, after modifications. We also went for the outside slide out BBQ and are really happy with it, its so easy to use, we can even stop of the way somewhere and have a quick tea/coffee without a hassle, and its so easy to pack away, but again, each to thier own.
Whichever way you go, Im sure you will get as much pleasure as we do and we believe it's one of the best decisions we've ever made. Good luck with your decision.

Not sure on the Jaycos, but I would be checking if you can get the weight increased- I was able to on mine when ordering a different brand, should not be too hard (or costly) unless the jayco is near its limits in terms of axle loads etc, and if its too close I would be looking to upgrade anyway.
Always better to have some in reserve, as when packing to go away its amusing how quickly it all adds up.

Well, I think the Hawk is the floor plan that will work for us a little better though there really isn't much difference. Got the prices back on some other additions which I thought wasn't to bad.
Inner spring for Queen bed only -$206
Extended draw bar - $247
Bag awning for kitchen - $620
Battery monitor though told this is with the solar pack
Water tank gauge - I would recommend fitting a control panel which will tell you level of water and batterys - $207 (this was recommendation from dealer)
12 volt pump fitted to the kitchen - $137

Oh!! go the HWS and external shower.

If I was to do it again I would buy a flamingo, a friend has a coramal with the same layout and its great, that little bit extra interior room make it more comfy aswell, but between the eagle and hawk my vote is the hawk. 2g for the hotwater is a bit steep :-X Ive got a coleman hotwater for 350 with all the extras :)

I've got a Swan so I'd pick the Eagle 8) Wardrobe works well with the $100 factory shelves fitted. We put all our clothes in there. A shelf each and one for dirty clothes. Folds down with clothes in it no probs. Think the hot water is $1250 and the shower is $200. Hot water works great. All set up ready to use in the sink or outdoor shower with 22l tank. Runs on 240v and gas.

Mate, inevitable with a young family and looks like the best option considering the work involved with a 3 and 2 year old thus wishing to make our camping trips as easy and comfortable as possible.......Camprite would be another great option but an awful lot of money.....I do like the Camprite but money always talks...........

Thats right mate its all about making it easier as trips away need to be enjoyable for all. I think the Jayco will serve you well, ours sure did.

What are you changing to now yours is sold?

What are the domestic fridges like? Do they really keep the stuff inside cold and cold enough for icy beer? I can get the Domestic 3 way replaced with a 110ltr Weaco 12/240v for an extra $500, is it worth the upgrade noting it will also be an extra 20ltrs of space....
-
It depends whether you plan to camp for long periods at one spot. If so, then gas is good.
-

True but I will have 2x120amp/hr AGMs fitted with 120watt solar on the roof and will be carrying a 2kva Honda gennie if needed (for the AC when I get a little soft in the tropical climate.....)
-
We did 3 week trips away with ours and had the Dometic fridge and used the gas most of this time and it worked well for us and you dont have to worry about the battery going flat by using the fridge.
That is unless you get the solar panel option and Waeco I guess, or you could get 2 gas bottles which would work out cheaper initially. But the Dometic will drain your 12v battery in around 20min (so I was told)
I hope this made sense :D
-
The trick to the Dometic is to make sure they are run on high on 240v for a few days before departure, they struggle to hold temp on 12v when travelling and are very thirsty on 12v if you stop for a short period.
Brilliant economy on gas, but you do need to ensure the camper is very level to get the max efficiency out of the 3 way fridge, too far out of level and it struggles.
If I had my time again and bought another Jayco I'd still go the 3 way to save the hassles and weight of extra batteries and solar etc.
The 240v side of it is as good as your fridge at home.
-
On the subject of gas fridges and having the van level... I have a free app on my iPhone called iLevel.
Only down side is that my fellow campers call me a geek. ::)

I have the same app on my IPOD Touch.....So I guess I must be a geek also....... ;D

Have a fridge 12v fan fitted to the vent as well one in my Eagle had manual switch, Swan had the on'off switch also but was thermo controlled Expanda is just thermo, would prefer manual switch.
-
I had a bit of a look at the Jaycos out of curiosity the other week and the thing that got my attention was the Simplicity suspension, yet it seems that nobody takes up the option by the sound of it. It is still leaf spring but looks to be a lot more solid than the beam axle. Price was an extra $1100 over the Outback pack.

I agree with all that but struggling to hold temp on 12v while travelling can be vastly improved IMO. I have a 90 litre dometic 3 way ST (Sub Tropical) rated fridge in my jayco eagle camper that works fine on 12v while travelling. In fact, on prolonged drives it works too good and starts to freeze things. However, I attribute this to correctly wiring my tow vehicle, discarding the standard jayco fridge wiring and re-doing it, and modifying the physical fridge installation to bring it in line with dometic's specification.

i have the waeco, and so far (one trip only) it's been fantastic

Providing pics is easier said than done!
Try 6 B&S cable (13.5mm2 conductor) including earth return from battery/s in vehicle via 50amp anderson plug right thru to terminal block behind dometic fridge, including a fridgeswitch.
I made and fitted a baffle in behind fridge that forces the rising air thru the condensor fins as stipulated in the dometic installation manual. This was done and installed thru vents from outside. Bit hard to take a pic of it in situ.
I also have vents providing positive pressure in camper when travelling. An air passage I have built thru the setec compartment directs excess air in behind fridge and it exhausts outside thru top fridge vent, complimenting condensor cooling when travelling. Bit hard to take pics of that, apart from the air grille in the setec compartment front.
Regards.

Nice work Mr T - I'm sure you and the clan will be very happy with a Jayco. We spent a week next to one on Moreton earlier this year, and it was a fabulous thing. Held a family of 3 teenagers no worry at all. Surprisingly large and spacious when all set up, and looked like it had all the mod-cons. I believe it was an Outback Hawk - it couldn't have been more than 6 months old either. All up, a really impressive unit.
Other than that, I have nothing of interest to add - but it seems like you're already gathering heaps of knowledgeable owners and their tips already.
My $0.02 - I'd upgrade to the Waeco fridge. Dometic are a great brand, and I know people love gas fridges when they're camped. For me though, I'd much prefer the extra weight of another battery and a good 2-way fridge. I find them heaps more reliable, both when travelling and when camped up. As I said though, that's just my personal preference (probably cause I'm lazy).
Good luck either way. You must be serious if the boat's on the market! ;D
Good luck!
Matto :)
-
OMG what a thread.......Paul you are soft!
Now seriously, when we were looking the only reason we did not get a Jayco caravany thingy was that at 6'5", i dont fit in the bed :(
On another note, I rmember someone spending a week getting another mans daughter (she was just talking) to say Waecos = Poo. God I hope you take the waeco option......hahahaha
Good luck with it mate :)

I had Simplicity Suspension on my Swan only because it was part of a package deal at the time, have had both types now ,think the only real bonus is more centre underbody clearance, I dont really thing it towed any better.

I got this option for my outback swan, mainly for the extra clearance.

I could be wrong, but I thought I saw a Jayco ad today in the Herald Sun that listed the price on a new Dove as from $14,990.
Could that price be right?
Trevor.

Been pretty impressed with it so far. Actually had to crank it right down on 240 to stop things freezing in the fridge.

Hi, we have had a Hawk & now have a new swan. Had the dometic last time & not that great. As already said, if you are parked up for a while then they are OK(just), but given the choice, go the waeco. As some others have already mentioned, the HWS is worth it as well. As we have a swan there was supposed to be a wardrobe, but we decided we would rather have more bench space so deleted it, (you have to fold it up everytime you move anyway).
We have the simplicity suspension, & I think it does tow better, seems to sit better on rough & corregated roads.
Cheers

G'Day,
We went the Outback Hawk for reason of the kids too. Here is my list of essentials
Replace all of your interior lights with these http://www.brightlightautoparts.com/files/UN12-20.pdf
Run a dual battery setup 2 x 100amp/hr is perfect.
Run 100amp cable from battery in car thru Anderson plug directly to the batterys in the trailer for on the go charging.
If you are going fixed solar, go much bigger than you think you need. If they are mobile like mine, you can gain a lot more amps by shifting the panels to follow the sun.
Add a volt meter so you can see the battery voltage
Add an electric inline pump and a push button switch for the water (The hand pump will drive you mad)
Drop Jacks are excellent
Longer draw bar is gold!
Bag flys are a must
A water level indicator is a must for the water tank (s) Add an extra tank if you go bush for long periods.
Boat rack is a good idea, we use ours a bit.
Make a pole carrier to save boot space.
INstall your own Stereo, it's easy and you can get a cheapy from Supacheap for bugger all that will do the job
Buy spare fridge control plastic covers as the kids will break at least one of these (not kidding ???)
Protect the underbody with rubber flaps and stone guards if you are hitting gravel roads. Stone damage is crazy. Maybe check out rock tamers for your vehicle.
That list should keep ya busy for a while. These are all mods I have done to mine and it's almost perfect now.
Enjoy your camper, they rock!
DJ

Another issue with gas fridges that I just remembered. You cant use them on Total Fire Ban Days in a camper with canvas walls. A normal caravan is OK.
-
Thanks all for the excellent information, it is greatly appreciated.
Looks like I have sold the boat and we will be driving to Townsville on Friday afternoon for a Saturday meeting with the Jayco dealer to view the camper in the flesh and discuss options etc. Has it stands at present this is the option list I am looking at;
Jayco Outback Hawk, theirs comes with - Bed Flys, ALKO Drop legs, Fiamma awning (though changing this to bag awning) and External TV Point.
120watt Solar Pack
2 x Battery set up
Anderson Plug for charging from vehicle whilst traveling.
A/C
CD/DVD Player with external marine speakers, love my tunes.
Extra jerry can holder
OZ Hitch
Roof Racks
Inner Spring mattress to Queen bed only
Draw bar extension
Bag awning to Kitchen side
Jayco control panel to show power and water levels
12v pump to kitchen
Sink cover
Microwave
Upgrade to 110ltr Waeco 12/240v fridge
-
Sounds good mate 8) but seriously consider the Aussie Traveller Coolabah Awning in lieu of the Bag.

Need it up here if you wish to camp all year round in comfort.....Plus, I'm getting soft......

No offence to any Jayco owner here, they certainly are a nice caravan ;D............
I recently made some enquiries at the Sydney Jayco H/O, I put it straight on em with a few serious questions about Jayco's ability to handle the rough stuff.
The sales person says straight up - they have their limitations....... I left..
But hey, maybe its just me, a camper needs to be able to go anywhere my 4wd goes.

No offence taken torsion. Agree with your rationale. Bit like a torsion bar set-up verses a live axle coil sprung set-up >:D
It has to suit your needs and those of your entire family. Different requirements at different stages of life I guess.

I have the external speakers on the Panda (Expanda) they're just below the roof line under the awning
so in the camper I guess they go along the top edge of the main body

Mate, Very true but it will do 90% of the tracks and great camping locations arround Aust. I too was of the same opinion but camping is a holiday and should be as easy as possible and a touring holiday with 2 children aged 2 and 3 is a lot of work and the easier I can make it for myself the more fun I and the family will have as Dad (me) will not be a cranky arse...... ;D
-
Mate congrats on taking the plunge we use our Jayco much more then we ever used the soft floor. I don't regret making the change at all.
I'm sure Bec and the kids will like it as well whatever it takes to get out with the family is a good thing. Now we need to organize a camping trip when you pick it up
Cheers Jason

Absolutely, it won't be ready till just before Christmas so we may take a couple of testing days on the way back from Townsville....
-
We have been tossing around the idea of heading your way somtime over the Christmas School Holidays we may have to look at the aircon thing

Bit like people arguing which bourbon is better. Some people get a kick from Jim beam, others prefer Cougar or Jack. At the end of the day after 20 or so we get all pissed and jobs done
If you can catch my relevance to the story...........
Yes ive had a few :P
Anyhow Congrats mate, many happy times ahead.

We have been tossing around the idea of heading your way somtime over the Christmas School Holidays we may have to look at the aircon thing
Jason
Early Jan should be good for us somewhere? Yes, A/C IMO was worth the extra $2700 when you live up here....... ;D

Leaving Cairns shortly to drive to Townsville to confirm Jayco order, exciting times........
-
Well, I laid down a deposit today and ordered a Jayco Hawk Outback,
Nice work bud! I was about to email you today and ask how you were going with it - should have just checked this thread instead! Bec and the kids must be pretty excited. Nice work, and a good list of options as well
A/C
You ARE getting soft!
(and I'm getting jealous)
I see you did end up going for the Waeco - good choice if I do say so. I think you'll be much happier with it's performance.
We'll have to tee up another weekend away - you'll have your new camper, and we'll actually have one for a change!
Good luck in Townsville mate!
Matto :)

The jayco is a great unit. We had the independent suspension and trigg hitch to cope with the little bit tougher stuff but they are no Kimberly. But way more comfortable with 2 double/queen beds full indoor kitchen with heaps of cupboard Space 2 seating area (swan) and all at the same height of your tow vehicle
And the brochure says it's a camper trailer
-
Well, I must express a great thank you to all those MySwaggers the inputed on this tread as the only change i made was go to the Fiamma Awning and not the bag awning. Everyone's assistance was greatly appreciated..........

Yeah, just slides on the sail track and peg to the ground. Best and simple option IMO....
-
The extras list seems to be getting longer and longer. Just added the 2nd water tank, doesn't mean I need to fill it always but gives you the option and it was only another $240 so pretty cheap really.......
-
Good option mate, better off having more water than needed than not enough.
should be a beauty mate
-
Make sure you get a GVM upgrade with that new tank
-

Already done. I had to due to all the other extras so it is now 2000kg rated. Thanks for the heads up though......

Hi Teabag,
I added an extra tank to mine (55 litre) , DIY from home as we go well away from civilisation when we go, and need to take plenty of water. We have around 130 litres capacity and only use it for drinking and cooking. For our family we can go for about two weeks before needing a top up. We also take 4 x Coleman collapsible 20 litre water containers which then gives us another seven to eight days on top of that if needed, or we just go once a week and grab 80 litres each week to top up the tanks.
Make sure you have an isolator between the tanks as we had a stone take out a plastic fitting on one tank and we lost one tank full of water. easily replaced and guarded for next time, but still worth the isolator.
Enjoy your Hawk, I'm about to hook mine up for another trip up to Exmouth for 10 days. YAY!

Nice work mate - should be a very well fitted out unit! If it's only been 2 days and you're already ringing up to add more options, I hate to think how decked out it's going to be by the time December rolls around! ;D
I very nearly sprung for a second water tank on ours for the same reason you've mentioned - you don't have to fill it, but there would be times when it would be very handy. Eventually decided against it since in standard trim we'll have heaps more water than we're used to, and I can always fit a second one down the track if it proves an issue.
Enjoy the suspense between now and delivery date!
Matto :)

Hey Teabag,
Impressive setup you are going for. I'm sure your family will be very comfortable on future trips :D
We have two kids, 3 and 1, and we have found the hawk to be a great small family setup. We love getting away in our camper.
I see you are going the Ozhitch, i recently fitted one to my hawk and so far it has been great. Much easier than the poly coupling on my old soft floor.
Enjoy your new camper when it arrives!

I hope so. My Cousin just did it to his Eagle and was impressed, plus the other benefit is the lower power consumption.......

so how many sets did you order? did you replace the outside light as well?

so how many sets did you order? did you replace the outside light as well?
I ordered 11 sets but haven't got the van yet, that isn't til mid December. I only ordered them yesterday in prep for when the van arrives.......
I'm now looking at a Honda or Yamaha 2Kva generator. This will also be used as back up power for Cyclone season........
-
Today I bought a couple of goodies for the Jayco in preperation. Picked up a new Honda 2Kva with cover and securing lock to power the van/AC when bush....hehehe...Also, bought a new Weber Baby Q with high lid for meat/roast cooking whilst away. Not too keen on cooking meat inside the Jayco.....The anticipation of arrival and first trip is killing me....... :'(
-
Yeah I recomend an outside BBQ - I don't cook inside at all (apart from toast) all my food prep is done inside (away from the flies) but all the actual cooking is done outside on a little BBQ.
PPPS
LED lights have lower power consumption? I thought everyone was doing it just for the Bling he He 8)

Did you get the Baby Q 120? We're looking at getting one also. Q 100 or Q120? Be interested to see how the Honda goes with the aircon.

No, we got the Q100 with cover and large hotplate to do eggs etc for breaky. Whe I spoke to the Honda dealer they asked if it was a Dometic AC which it is and he stated that the 2KVa is what they recommend. I will post up how it performs once I get the van and trial it.....

get bayonet fitted to Jayco and optional lead for the Q and plug it straight in, Our Q fitted in the side hatch of the Swan without the lid.
hopefully it will fit in the Panda was well, rough mesurement says it should

stupid question #674..
Do you just have a normal gas pipe between the camper and the BBQ? Presumably you don't need a regulator as it's already regulated at the bottle?
-

yep normal lead from Bayonet to Baby Q no regulator, the lead I got for Bayonet is 3mtr, the supplied lead with BBQ has regulator.
-
cheers bushy, i thought that would be the case. I just need to track down a long hose now..

got mine from BBQ Galore, $56 from memory
-
I seriously thought about getting a gas connection on the a fram or rear of the Camper but decided against it as I wanted the freedom to put the BBQ out in open air, not under awning to cook. Having a gas line running out to this would be a trip hazard for the little ones and isn't a real issue setting up on gas bottle and Baby Q.
-
I put two on mine and in 15 months have used them once.
-
Mate a baby q you are becoming quite caravan ish now aren't you ;D. We love our baby q top bit of gear we use it every weekend at home to do the Sunday roast as well as taking it away with us when we go camping. Just finished a yummy roast lamb tonight cooked in the baby q. We also thought about the extra gas connection but in the end decided against it haven't regretted not getting it
Cheers Jason

Teabag - you posted out of Cairns or just changing your lifestyle?? Not per chance heading back to Queanbeyan are you?

Well, I have had to make some changes to my extras with one forced due to Jayco no longer doing swing up Jockey wheel. Seems to do with when the jockey wheel is wound all the way out on the outbacks to contact the ground there isn't sufficient thread engaged and they deem unsafe. Well, I would have thought you just source a bigger jockey wheel. I also had the second jerry can removed and replaced with a second gas bottle though only a 4.5kg as this is for the Weber Baby Q100.

Teabag I can't believe you are getting a poptop!
Funny thing is we are deciding on a Hawk or Flamingo this weekend ourselves :-[ Our list of extras looks about the same as yours right now! We'll keep the camper trailer for the harder 4WDing as it owes us nothing in any case.

Cheers Matto, yep there are many extras but no more will be added now. I have signed of on the final fitout for the camper so things are rolling along well. I must admit the excitment and planning of the first trip is out of control. Looking at a 2 week trip mid Jan somewhere along the Qld coast, Rollingstone is looking good at the moment.

Well, Jayco have just informed me that I have too much weight on the roof as it can only take 75kg....
The maximum weight the roof can hold is 75kg.
Here is a list of weights of the options. I have to delete stuff to get my weight down to under 75kgs...
Fiamma awning 22kg
Off side bag awning 10kg
Roof rack 10kg
Aircond 40kg
Solar 10kg
Bed end flys 9kg
I chose to delete
Roof rack 10kg
Solar 10kg - This will be replaced with a portable unit.
Off side bag awning 10kg - This will be replaced with sail track and sunblocker awning that slides on....
I also decided to delet Microwave to maintain some cupborad space.....
-
I see that the air con wasn't gonna get deleted.. ;D
I suppose in the Cairns weather, its understandable......and seeing as you now have a soft roader !!.....well almost....its gonna be van parks all the way !!!!! ;D ;D

Yeah, the AC was a serious consideration wrt deleting but the other items deleted have work arounds except the roof rack but the Patrol has one for anything else needed. When it come to all year round climate and camping, the AC can be your friend up here and was never going to go...hehehe...A little soft I know.....
-
Hello Teabag
It's a pity that you had to delete some of the extras that you were after but sounds as if you can work around it. I have just purchased a Jayco Flamingo with a lot of goodies. Needed to upgrade to the 2000kg axel as it just got too heavy. I'm a little surprised you didn't go for the gas hot water system. Hot water on tap - easy clean ups. I'm sure your going to have lots of fun with it...Enjoy!

We did seriously think about hot water system but for the money and is only for doing the dishes I thought the expense was a little too much. We will just carry a cheap elect kettle and wait a minute or two for it to boil......

Paul,
Firstly, "You have changed"
Secondly, You are now officially soft
Thirdly, Don't use the kids as an excuse to buy a caravan. YOU have gone soft and you are just trying to justify it to us (and perhaps yourself!). As I remember Bec was more than happy with the KK!
Fourthly, Do you have any ideas on how I could mount A/C to my Trackabout?
Fiftly, We are going camping down the south coast again with Greg and Tammy to the infamous place where I snapped a vital piece of personal equipment (that helps you walk) from the 27th Dec to the 4th Jan. Are you coming in your new luxo holiday apartment on wheels?? ;D
Lastly, you should sell the Datto and buy a Porsche Cayenne or VW Toureg. Much more befitting now!
Cheers

Cloud basher Thats a bit harsh , leave the old boy alone as he sees out his twilight years .

Dave, All I have is yes to all below except for AC in a Trackabout but then again that isn't you go anyway as your too hard core for AC.....hehehe......Remember beach cricket is bad for your health though it is a fantastic spot and wish I could make it.......Porsche or VW, now there's a thought? ;D ;D ;D
PS: Was your old man happy with Motsons and the Turbo upgrade?
I know I am..... ;D

Mate old man is extremely happy with the turbo upgrade. Don't reckon I will be able to convince him to get a twunjy now. He is selling his Pioneer now though as they are looking at an Aussie Swag with all the fruit. Glad you are happy with your mate. I thought you were getting the turbo upgrade to tow a Kedron!

Hi All,
When I had a Jayco, I had the Eagle rather than the Hawk because the fold down table and chairs converts to a full length single bed (as opposed to a shorter single bed in the Hawk).

Hey Teabag,
Why did you go with one of 2Brutal's and not a Stone Stomper? I had sort of decided on a Stone Stomper but am happy to listen to reasoning. Could you tell me the price if you're happy to? And did you get the flaps on it or just the guard?
Cheers big ears.

I have a question for Jayco owners. Can you stack anything on the beds when packing away, such as, Table, bedding(doona) and maybe underlay matress of eggshell type? How much room is there or is it a pretty tight fit?
Thanks in advanced..... ;D
-
hi teabag
depends on the size of your matress but you should be able to keep a doona on top and underlay undrneath no probs
i dont think you would be able to stack a table on top tho

We had the Foam mattress in the Swan with the egg shell overlay on, use to leave sheets mostly, some times left doonas on but only for the shorts journeys between stops, sometime had to adjust roof clips. If raining cover the beds with cheap tarp which tucked under on 3 external sides, use to put doonas and pillows on the dinnette seats.
-
Same here we have the foam eggshell things on our mattress, if we are just on bituman I will leave the bed completly made up with doonas but if we are 4wding I lock it down a bit tighter and just leave the sheets
-
Cheers for the prompt responses. We have ordered the inner spring for the queen bed but am thinking on adding eggshell top to make it a little more softer, not keen on firm beds. I guess as long as the fitted sheets can stay then it isn't all bad. Do any of you store stuff on the floor in the camper on non skid matting? I would assume not but would be interested if people do? We would look at only soft stuff like blankets and pillows etc......
-
We've got the queen inner spring on our bed and have no trouble closing it up with flanny sheets and a really thick blanket in winter, We just pack the pillow on the lounge.
Don't have an eggshell overlay but have been meaning to get 1.
It also really depends how neat you lay/ fold the canvas ends when you close it up as to how easy or hard it is to close the roof down tight.
-
Yeah I fill up the floor, we have an oze trail style marquee, an aluminium table in a bag and a BBQ on the floor under, around the table and then if camping with the dog we throw our two car fridges in the kitchen (we have 2 12v outlets) on the side of the cabinet that the fridge sits in.

Do you put anything underneath to prevent it sliding around? Also, is your BBQ a Baby Q100? Be interested where people store their BBQ?
Also, does the Honda 2kva fit in the front storage compartment?
-
regarding the bed.. We've got the innerspring mattress on the front of the hawk, and i tried having our visco mattress topper on it (best $300 ever spent from clarkrubber) - but the top wouldn't close properly. the additional height (about 2") of the topper was stopping the lid coming down because of where the door folds up onto the roof. I actually cracked the plastic on the front nearside corner doing this (warranty fixed it!)
-
No we don't put anything on the floor, it's pretty much packed tight and that stops it. Sorry it's not a baby Q it's rectangular with a hood and wedges quite nicely under the table with the annex matting. Don't know about the Gennie, I don't have one and the front is where we keep the annex sides and folding chairs.
Cheers

Cheers, Thanks for that..... ;D

I pack the Weber on the floor in a bag along with anything else I cant fit in the car.I but some non slip
matting under anything that could slide around and bash into the cupboards.Have had any problems yet.
I put the heavier things on or behind the axle so as to not end up weighing the back of the car more.
When we go away and take the honda gennie I put it in the van as they dont seem to put any fumes
out when the vent is off.Just to be careful I will open up the van and let some air in before I start the
fridge on gas.Like some others I tahe the doona off to get the top to seal well on dirt roads.Hope you
enjoy the new rig when it turns up.
Cheers Footloose

Same as most other replies, we leave sheets and blankets on beds, any think stuff goes on the dinning area (pillows thick doona's). We have an innerspring quenn bed with a woolen underlay (very cosey and softens the crappy innerspring ;D).
On the floor we store a few buckets (used for bathing our little girls), and sometimes the weber Q100 in a duffle bag, usually ontop of our annex area rubber matting to stop it all sliding around. Also the porta cot for our youngest seems to wedge nicley under the dinning table. For rougher trips on dirt roads i strap the weber in its bag to our roof cage on the Patrol.
Like Bushy said get some cheap tarps for those days you have to pack up with wet canvas >:(
Once you have it set up the way you want it with everything you need, trips away will be so easy! We finally had a weekend without rain and went away just for one night. Thats what i love about my Jayco, its always packed ready to go, just throw some clothes bags in the car, basic food in the Waeco and we are good for a relaxing weekend away.
Enjoy

June for us is the trip north to the cape with the 4WD club, we were planning on catching up with you guys for a few days on either side of the trip but was waiting till closer to talk about it, but yeah definately something,
-
Hey Teabag
A gennie wont fit in the front boot its only the width of fold up chairs in there bags which is were use to put ours.
We use to just throw our bedding on the couch as it was easier to latch the roof down if your a bit lazy on how neat you fold the canvas up ;D it also made for a quicker pack up IMO :D
Also when folding the camper up and pushing the beds back in just make sure the canvas is clear of the bed runners as its easy for the canvas to get pinched when pushing the beds in, which wil pierce the canvas.

I have 100% confirmation, the New Jayco Hawk Outback will be collected from Jayco Townsville Friday morning....... ;D ;D ;D ;D ;D

Let the mods begin :cup:

Gidday teabag
about time eh! good stuff. ;D
I'm going down to Gold Coast in mid Jan to get mine (as long as the Bruce stays flood free....). Hard thing is, it's sitting there waiting for pick up now :'( Return journey will be a good shakedown - it will need it's first 'service' by the time I get back. Bought it fairly stock (flys, bag awning & roof rack) and will do the mods up here. I'll get in touch with the guy on here that does a stone guard, as I will be cruising right past his neck of the woods...

Hello All
After reading 13 pages of pro's and con's no one brought up that fact that the 2 have different bench heights. How does the hawk go with the very low bench height? Does it get annoying and give 6 foot people a saw back?
Still liking the hawk for the kids safety in the kitchen.
Cheers Ben.
-
does the eagle have a higher bench? The bench in the hawk *is* a little low (i'm 6'3"), but the wife is only 5'1" so it's the ideal height for her doing the cooking (checks to make sure she's not behind me)
-
I think the bench heights are the same. They are determined by the height of the van itself, which is the same.
-

Is that a condition carpenters get?

Yea plus a case of late night typing,
No the hawk is actually lower cause of the tap on the sink actually is under the beds when folded in meaning the tap has to be lower i thing the bench is around 600mm high and the eagle is around 750mm from memory.

That was why we bought the swan
-
Would love to raise the bench in our hawk somehow .
Maybe some other style of tap would allow it to be raised .
I have a lower back problem and struggle doing dishes and cooking .
Cheers paul
-
I don't think this is the case at all. The two models (Hawk and Eagle) use the identical fridge with identical specifications. The top of the bench sits fairly snug on my Eagle's fridge and there is no way the Hawk's bench could sit 15 cm lower.
-
I chose the Eagle Over the Hawk mainly due to the higher sink height in the Eagle.
-
This was the reason we purchased a Eagle.
Hawk has a lower sink= to much bending over.
Cheers,
V8ute

Would love to see some side by side pics

LOL
good luck lets try and jam and eagle in a hawk or maybe the hawk will fit better in a eagle ???
-
I meant as in comparison shots of the height of the benches 8)
-
Im going to try and drag the Mrs down to the local Jayco this weekend and ill try and get one for comparison.
-
OK. Let's put this put this SH1TE to be bed, badger, go measure the height of your bench in the Hawk, I'll be back in 2 with the Eagle height.
-
75 cm.

luckily it's up on the drive....
714mm

luckily it's up on the drive....
714mm
and 772mm on the "other" side (the one where the fridge is).
Looks like it's built for hawk-@rses then!

HA very funny, So they are different just not as much as i remembered 40mm still a little bit lower hmm.....
-
Well, looks like the Eagle owners are the superior Sapiens and the Hawk owners little less developed!! It all makes sense now...!
