disappointing that CIL only do a grand

- - Specialist Claims Service 24/7, 365 days a year
- - New vehicle replacement cover
- - Storm, Hail and Flood cover
- - Automatic contents cover of up to $1,000
- - Optional pay by the month service
http://www.cilinsurance.com.au/

They cover you for more than a grand but you pay extra for every extra 1000 of cover.
I had 2.5 k of items stolen from the storage box when it was packed up ready for a boxing day departure.  I paid for 2k of extra cover.   Turns out anything that was part of the camper that was stolen such as battery / battery charger is covered automatically ie not coming out of the contents cover. I got my 2.5 k back and was impressed with CIL as a company.
Realistically how much many items of value are you really going to store    under canvas whilst you are away anyway?  With me it would be a 12v tv and the hottap which would be secured for me. Maybe I'm lucky because the fridge is in the locked and now alarmed storage box.

From memory CIL said I was covered inside the main area of the camper but not an annexe.

My main concern are really the fridge/esky, the bedding (sleeping bags), battery/gas storage, the tools and the kitchen stuff. Although I'd have to check as some of these could be lockable so I might be able to get a better coverage.

All the electronic stuff (laptop, camera, tablets...) are kept in the car anyway so that's not an issue.

Part of CILs product disclosure statement

Going by this, I would interpret it as No, theft is not covered in the main tent area or the annex if the tent is erected.

What we do not cover
We will not pay for:
8 repairs that are done without first getting our written
consent.
8 the cost of repairing damage not caused by the
accident or event you are claiming for.
8 theft or attempted theft from your caravan or your
annexe if:
t    it does not have hard walls, or
t    it is not securely locked, or
t    there is no physical evidence of forcible and
violent entry.
8 theft, attempted theft or malicious damage by someone
who is in your caravan or your annexe with your
consent.
8 loss of or damage to your contents caused when
erecting, dismantling, modifying or repairing the
annexe.
8 loss of or damage to your contents that is caused by,
actions or movements of the sea (including storm
surge) or a tidal wave.
8 loss or damage that is excluded in the “when we may
refuse a claim” section (see pages 41 to 44).
8 loss of or damage to your contents kept in your
caravan’s annexe that is caused by a named cyclone, if
the annexe does not have hard walls and a hard roof.
8 for a claim in respect of misplaced or lost (excluding
stolen) contents.
8 loss or damage caused by you failing to protect your
caravan after it:
    t    breaks down,
t    is damaged in an accident, or
t    is stolen and later found.
8 loss that occurs because you cannot use your caravan.
8 loss or damage to your contents caused by an electrical
fault in the wiring of your caravan if the wiring does
not comply with the Standards Association Code for
Electrical Installation in Caravans.
8 loss of or damage to your contents if at the time of the
loss or damage you have hired out your caravan for
reward, even if you have selected the optional cover of
“Hire Use”.
We do not provide any cover under this Section 2 if you
have insured a trailer or horsefloat under this policy.

Wow for a biggest specialist insurer they sure have plenty of exclusions. I think club4x4 have the most user-friendly PDS I have seen so far, any others out there?

Im re doing my camper insurance right now

I found both club 4x4 and cil easy to read, when i copied it over the formatting didnt copy properly. I also found the inclusions and exclusions of both companies pretty much identical. CIL had slightly higher cover on some items and were a little unclear on others (calling the cover reasonable costs rather than putting a cap on it.)
The annual premium for very similar payout on a total loss were also very similar. The biggest thing I found was that cil will only cover mods that I have receipts for (no matter the age) where club 4x4 I had to send a list of mods with a price next to each mod which they sent off to their underwriter for approval, after approval all my mods are covered without the need for receipts. Approval was quick, I sent in a list one day and the next approval was given along with a quote.

So if I am to go with club 4x4 my camper is insured for market value plus mods on top, but once I add up both policies in case of total loss the total was almost the same anyway. which one too choose?

Someone mentioned above that contents is a waste of time and that you should put contents on your home insurance policy. Cleary I am with the wrong company, with my policy unless I specify each item individually I think the max i can claim per claim is $1500. I do have the family devices (including phones)  covered as an extra with zero excess, it also covers accidental breakage which is great because my girls use them for school.

You'll find you will need to specify your camper/car contents to your home insurer or nominate a larger lump sum for you unsecured valuables and your premium will increase accordingly. You will get up to $1500 without nominating anything afaik? Yes, I also have 2 kids with computers and they go on this part of my policy as well rather than subscribing to the schools very expensive laptop insurance policy.

I didn't find either hard to read but by user free I was referring to what is/isn't covered.

Correct me if I am wrong as I am just on my phone and going from memory but CIL excludes something along the lines of "Actions by the sea including high tides" so if you get stuck on the beach and the tide comes in and gets the camper then CIL won't cover you but Club 4x4 doesn't have that exclusion.

Also CIL had an exclusion about fires started from electrical faults which I would think would be one of the main causes of fire,  so if you have a bad device or if a wire wears through over time and starts a fire then you aren't covered either. I don't recall reading this in the Club 4x4 pds.

Once again just going from memory and haven't compared side by side so feel free to correct me if I am wrong.

You are right, CIL doesnt  cover actions by the sea and Club 4x4 doesnt have that exclusion, the exclusion club 4x4 have is that they dont cover trailer/caravan being used offroad in a way they were not designed to be used, which can be a pretty broad statement and in the case of the jayco campers (and other campers with similar warranties) would worry me, I know they can easily be taken places that the manufacturer advises warranty doesnt cover so if your jayco is damaged during a water crossing (which jayco states warranty excludes) then does that mean that club 4x4 also wont insure you?
My trailer is full off road, but can they claim that driving it in the ocean was not a use it was designed for? Another thought is that if a camper got swallowed by that sinkhole at inskip last year, would CIL cover that or would it be considered a movement of the sea.

CILs exclusion against faulty wiring is if the wiring did not meet the Standards Association Code for
Electrical Installation in Caravans.
Club 4x4 dont cover poor or faulty design, specifacation, materials, repairs or workmanship. The use or application of caravan parts or accessories which do not meet manufacturers specifications.

The other major difference is that CIL wont cover is loss or damage to your caravan or your annexe while
your caravan is being transported by road (excluding when your caravan is being towed), rail or sea, if you
have not selected the optional cover of “Transporting your caravan.”
Club 4x4 covers the camper during transport as long as its being transported legally.

CIL insurance for a camper trailer (not a caravan).
« Reply #36 on: November 24, 2016, 01:22:19 PM »
Hi,

Just doing some research on insurance for our (to be delivered) camper trailer. CIL seems to have a good wrap however I was having a quick look at the PDS and came across this (emphasis mine):

"Subject to the policy terms and conditions, we provide $1000 cover for loss or damage to your contents in your caravan or an annexe. You can choose to take out extra contents cover. We do not provide cover for contents in a trailer."

Now that seems a bit odd for camper trailer insurance given effectively all the contents are in the trailer!  ??? I gave them a call and they confirmed what was in the PDS.

Anyone had issues with contents coverage and CIL on their camper trailer (not caravan)?

Going through the same boat with regards to contents for a camper trailer. I've now written to CIL to clarify the situation (is a camper trailer considered a caravan?) so hopefully will get a response in writing. Will post here if I get anything.

We have $2000 contents insurance for our CT with NRMA. They automatically give you $1000 but you can raise it. We also took out layby insurance with them which lets choose up to 6 months of the year that CT remains in the garage. reduces your premium. If for some reason you do want to take it away just call them and they will charge the extra for just that month.

CIL is a Suncorp company and has been for some time.  Not sure if Suncorp has sold CIL though??

A good home insurance policy will cover your Contents everywhere provide they are 'temporarily removed'.  Ours covers us worldwide for up to 180 days.  This broad coverage is only available via a broker.

However if you are on the road permanently, as others have said you either need to increase the contents on your caravan/camper trailer insurance or self insure unfortunately.  Most have restrictions though as many have highlighted.  Same problems arise if you live permanently on a boat.  There just isn't much coverage available out there.

Our big ticket items (2nd fridge primarily) are covered by the car insurance, even if not in the car at the time.  I've also worked out how I can essentially lock the storage on the camper with the tent up, and it seemed to be acceptable to in the insurer...

Also on camper insurance, my insurer (RACQ) has clarified that my fridge, because it isn't bolted (tie down straps), is NOT covered under the policy.
It lives in the gull wing box on a slide but I still need to list it on my unsecured valuables on my home insurance if I want any sort of cover for it. Same applies for van/hybrid fridges which aren't specifically bolted in place. Just one more thing to keep in mind.

NRMA included our fridge as part of the camper not contents and its only got tie downs
