As I understand it the categorisation is determined by wind velocity. Up to 160kmh I think is cat 2. It doesn't reflect the rain volume or the tidal surge. The low barometric pressure causes king tides and the accompanying wind on top of that creates tidal surge. So all the water falling on the land can't get away to sea which at the same time is trying to inundate the land.

As a kid living in Cairns we were on the edge of a few but never actually copped one. I did see the see water coming up through the stormwater grates in the main street once as an associated king tide pushed up.

They have already had a lot of rain up there and water storages are well up if not already full. I've heard reports of up to 400mm.
Its got to go somewhere.

The waiting can't be much fun. Thinking of you all and lets hope it fades to a low pressure system as it approaches the coast.

do some more research and have a look at where those cyclones crossed the coast.

then you might see why Alfred is still very dangerous.  not necessarily for wind, but for rainfall in a HEAVILY populated area, with not much open ground for water to soak away, as opposed to further north.

Using that list of cyclones as a reason to downplay the danger is asinine and shows a real lack of understanding.

The media beat up everything and have been doing it for decades.

Is it right? No.

Do you have to consume it and pass it on? Also no.

Always the way though, if it bleeds, it leads. Guaranteed there will be someone in a raincoat or in the driving rain, trying to fit under an umbrella, leading the evening news.

Also guaranteed I'll get a panicked phone call from Mum or rellos interstate asking how we are surviving the ferocious onslaught of the storm or getting on with the fires or whatever disaster is currently in progress.


Right now we have 20km/h breeze and had about 0.2mm of rain all day. Had the day off work, so put in a fence post and cleaned up the shed so I can fit another car in there.
The storm will come, not much I can do about it, so the yard is tidied up, fridge stocked and contingencies considered/actioned for loss of power. Should be an interesting Friday night.

I'm out between Ipswich and Gatton and had some light aircraft buzzing along around 4pm. We're reasonably protected, but it would have been a bumpy ride up there.

It's actually a busy airport.
We used it to fly to Sydney several times, in stead of Coffs.
I used to ride a Honda CR 125 elsonor on the flat track, before the airport was built.
Fun fact, my father had a contact, to transport passengers from Ballina to Lismore Airport.
He heard Ballina was to have an airport, he sold his contract, which paid for two taxis in Maclean.

but the news gets better not brilliant..

Alfred tipped to become category 1, but still ‘extremely dangerous The category 2 system has slowed considerably as it moves towards Queensland, and could make landfall much later than previously predicted.

Cat 1 is better than the initial Cat 3 reports

The last couple of day have been, well strange.
Wednesday, the NSW goverment started to close schools from Grafton to the boarder.
Local council closed their offices. Yet outdoor staff were dealing with issues in preparing for the worst.
As usual, people went nuts and emptied the supermarket Shelves.
Thursday, Shops and businesses closed their across the Clarence Valley, some businesses stayed open until Friday lunch/close of business.
Up until then,  we had just over 140mm in 4 days, yesterday(Friday), It rained all day and most of the night. Fysh being an SES member was called out to a couple of trees that had come down on road around Lawrence.
The RFS, we haven't been called for assistance, not even a MVA, Which is fantastic.
This morning, I checked the rain, 158mm, 7am.
Just made a cuppa and the power went off, git ready to fire up the genny to keep the 3 fridges going, got the leads out, in place.
And the power was back on.
I kept every in place, just in case.
I let Fysh sleep into about 9am.
Turned the idoit box, and the cyclone was now a East Coast Low.
It's rain lightly most of the day, appears there is more rain on the way.
Lismore is on a knife's edge. As the Wilson River slowly rises to the top of the levies.
Fysh has been called out again, trees over roads, building, no injuries that I know of, the wind has backed right off, the ground is just saturated.
The Clarence River is rising, watch River gauges around the catchment, alot of water is still to enter the system.
It well be maybe a week before ferry at Lawrence is operating again.
That means next week a drive of either 140km's on tar through Grafton to attend works, or 100km trip with a third of on a one lane winding dirt road. Hmm
I don't mind taking the dirt option, except for the idoits that drive well over a safe speed.

I hope everyone has been safe across the impact area of this system, I don't think it's over yet.

A whole lot of bugger-all where I am just west of Ipswich.
A bit of blustery wind yesterday, but it dropped of to nothing last night. So far we're lucky to have had 30mm since Thursday. I'm in the RFS and yesterday we were called out to door knock potential flood areas (they flood every time) and tomorrow we're on the hook for cleaning up downed trees.

I'm not complaining, the tanks are full and I quite like my protected little valley, we seem to dodge most of the wild weather.

Imo, I could be wrong, hope am because people have had enough in some areas.
We're we are, for the moment we have dodge it?
The warnings are to the north & south of us, yet we do have a huge catchment, the system is slow moving at the moment, more moisture will be drawn into our catchment.

Wild footage has captured the moment a Queensland man was caught with multiple vehicle keys and alleged housebreaking implements in his car, as opportunistic thieves target homes amid ex-Tropical Cyclone Alfred.

The footage, released by Queensland police, shows the moment a police officer chased down and arrested the man while he was standing in flood waters in Rocklea late on Sunday night.

“You’re under arrest brother, hands behind your back,” the officer says as the pair stand in the murky water.

Police were conducting proactive patrols when they came across the man’s car with false registration plates in flood waters around 11pm.

Police allegedly found 10 sets of vehicle keys, drug utensils, and house-breaking implements in the man’s car, with video footage showing officers finding an axe, bolt cutters, torches and a screwdriver among other items in the vehicle.

The 44-year-old allegedly attempted to run from police but was taken into custody at the scene.

We're back! ;D

Lost power ~midnight Thursday night, came back on ~1am this morning. Mobile towers apparently started dropping out Friday arvo, as data has been off & on since then.

Up till this morning, we've had 656.25mm over the 5 days! :o

Lost a couple of tree branches, collected a few more in the back yard from the neighbour's Silky Oak & a bit of mess to clean up, but no damage as such ;D

Hope everybody else got through OK ???
