I've been getting into Downhill lately (on my trail bike a Trek Fuel ex), I even raced in the first round of the WA DH series, so have started looking around for a proper DH bike before I break something! There seems to be plenty of Giant Glory's around for sale pretty cheap.

Giant Glory is good value.

check it over carefully. 2nd hand DH frames are used in the same way as 2nd hand V8 supercars...

Double check things like when the rear shock was serviced and things like that.

Also worth noting... in my day job we sell Cane Creek headsets. We sell a LOT of "Anglesets"  (http://www.canecreek.com/products/headsets/angleset) (basically it's an adjustable headset that can adjust the steering angle by as much as 1.5 degrees)

because the Glory has a reputation for having too steep a head angle. The Angleset (or other similar device) can fix this.

Giant Glory's are a damn good bike, and a second hand buy could be great value - as long as you don't buy a shagged one.

Have a look at: www.rotorburn.com which is Australia's largest MTB forum for advice and/or buying. Plenty of experienced heads there if you are looking to buy.

A couple of years ago I sold my DH bike, and bought a shorter travel bike which is more useful for general riding than a DH sled. I have an Intense Slopestyle 2 which has 155-170mm rear suspension travel and a 180mm travel fork. It can handle any DH I will be riding - but is versatile enough for longer rides as well. Especially if I want to ride with the kids.

Maybe a 150-160mm travel bike is a good option to consider. But then a DH is great fun when turned downhill.

Same sort of riding as yourself scblack, with my son and the occasional session on some trails. What else on the market is similar to the Scott?

I agree. Seeing he has the hardtail, single track riding is sorted.

The pedal-ability of new 150mm travel bikes is very very good. And they will give oh-so much more fun when the trail heads downhill. OR be so much more comfortable for your backside.

Something with the 150mm travel is MUCH more versatile than a 120mm XC style bike. I concur and suggest an enduro style bike.

Put the good stuff where people look or where it makes a difference. Put the cheaper stuff where you don't look or it doesn't matter.

XT gears shift well, SLX brakes stop almost as good, cranks only make a little difference to the weight.

you'll also find that they downspec' things like cassettes, chains, bottom brackets, hubs and headsets.

again, speaking from my own experience with Cane Creek, I find it truly sad how many high end bikes fit the low end Cane Creek headsets to their bikes out of the box.

When you're spending $4k to $7k on a boutique mtb brand (*cough* Santa Cruz) you could at least spec' a higher level headset to your bikes... geezus.

On our ti frame build kits, we fit either 40 series (XT quality) or 110 series (XTR level).

so I finally got round to taking some pics of my new toy...

Titanium frame, Rock Shox Bluto fork with 120mm travel (also have a ti rigid fork to swap out for the Simpson Desert Bike Challenge), Rohloff 14 speed internally geared rear hub, hydraulic disc brakes... titanium handlebar and seatpost, tubeless fat bike wheels and tyres.

Only running 4.25" wide tyres currently as it's set up for trail riding. But I can swap to 4.8" for deserts and beaches.

I've been hanging onto our eldest son's Felt that he used a few years back when he showed an interest in triathlons. Rode a couple of junior events and some training rides then lost interest. Where would be a good place to advertise it for sale? Just Gumtree or something like Bike Exchange?
