kit e kat, I like the idea of warm lightweight blankets. Do you have a pic of them at all?  I think I will invest in a few of these. Are they the coral fleece ones maybe or polar fleece?

Foam queen size mattress,
Ikea 2 inch mattress pad (this has just transformed how the foam mattress feels and hasn't increased the weight by much)
Mattress protector
Fitted sheet
Flat Sheet
Doona in doona cover
A couple of my favourite throw blankets which if its warm, I'll just use and not take the doona.

I like the idea of the insulation under the bed but does it let the bed breathe at all or do you have to air it out occasionally?

And does anyone use a canvas bed bag at all and what are your thoughts on that?

Any details on the mattress pad? - just not sure what it is  - do you have a link or a photo?
What do you mena by transforming the feel?

That is similar to the product I bought. (I couldn't find the exact same mattress pad but Ikea have a selection of different ones anyway to suit a budget or comfort.)

Even though my original foam mattress is meant to be high density, I felt at times when sleeping on it that it was compressing a bit too much and I could feel the bed base if I was sleeping on my side. At first I tried a slightly more padded mattress protector but that didn't help. In the end when I saw these pads at Ikea I thought I'd give one a go. It has stopped me from feeling the bed base and has made the bed so much more comfortable to be in. So, instead of it feeling like a hard foam mattress, it feels a lot better, not softer as the bed base helps with the firmness, just that you can't compress the foam mattress so much that you feel it any more.

Hope that gives you some idea what I mean.

Insulated blanket under 8" hd foam mattress, egshell on top of that, fitted sheet, normal sheet, one of those micro blankets(like they have in hospitals) and doona that usually gets booted off.
Have a spare blanket rolled up at end of bed just in case.
It is in my blood to modify

Thanks!  Couldn't recall the name of the fabric.  Polar Fleece.  Two singles - complete with paw print pattern (for sitting on the camp chairs if required or if the minki gets too hot) and one double in a (eww) white.

I highly recommend them.  They are both warm and cool when required.  They aren't heavy on you, which is something I dislike in bedding.

Pretty much, though it is also covered in a padded cotton cover which seems a bit better than the plain fabric cotton cover on the original mattress I have. Don't know if that makes any difference or not. Though at home, I have a sofa bed we have put a timber base onto (as the trampoline is just too soft and couples tend to roll into the middle all the time!) and we have a similar set up with a thick mattress topped with the thinner original sofa bed mattress. All our guests always rave about how comfy that bed is too.

We laid a double size blue foam roll mat under our foam mattress for insulation purposes and have an egg shell underlay on top.
Fitted sheet, down doona and a camping blanket and goose down sleeping bag at the ready. Take a flat sheet in summer as its always good to have something over you.

We tried to buy some egg shell matress stuff today and couldn't get it at Kmart or Target in a King size so went upto the only "manchester shop" in town and was told that they refuse to sell egg shell foam as they said customers kept bringing t it back within a year because it would degrade and tear easily, she said most people only get about 4 years out of them. Has anyone else encountered this problem? (we suspect it might be a little bit of a tall story to get us to buy another type of product which doesnt suit our requirement).

We are thinking $80-$100 every 4 years is not such a bad investment. (Looks like we will have to buy online - shock horror).

For two years we had a king size 4" foam mattress and  microfibre mattress topper with insulation and compact  foam on the bed base, but recently modified it.

We cut our mattress down to a queen size, added an eggshell topper, then a microfibre mattress topper, all of which now fit in the mattress cover, making it into a 7" mattress and it`s very ,very comfortable. :D

Sheets and a king size doona cover which I sewed up on the sides to make an insert to fit a queen doona giving me enough cover to tuck in so Frank doesn`t pinch it all. >:D In summer we just use the cover only, if needed and if really cold we have an opened winter weight sleeping bag thrown on top.
