Crack of dawn, RFS uniform on, at the Fire Station in Lawrence by 6.30am.
8 members, 3 vehicles(cat 1, 7, 9), off we go to help with the flood clean up.
Listening to the chatter on Comms, there a bridges not only from the Clarence valley calling in, bridges from Coffs, Armidale, Glen Innes all calling in.
We call in as we leave the station, confirming what we intend to be doing, it acknowledged and thanked for our assistance.
Over the next 10 hours we go door to door checking on people, asking can we help, is there anything we can help you with. Some of these people have been in the houses for a week. We push mud with rake/hoes, hose out under houses, wash sheds, driveways & roads.
The look on their faces, they are grateful for the help.
When they smile, you can see what you've done for them has made a huge difference to their day.
That makes me smile.
Just be kind, it doesn't take much.
