What is the right way to 'toilet' in remote areas?

Should we dig a hole to bury and burn our waste; have to take our own porta potties; or take our number 2s out with us?

After reading about the sealing of many remote highways and roads, and how Pauline Hanson wants to spend $100,000 on building a boardwalk to the Tip of Cape York, I questioned why building toilets to cater to the massive influx of tourists wasn't the first thing proposed.
I suggested this on Fbook and mentioned that even if everyone responsibly buried their waste, there still isn't enough ground to cater for the numbers of tourists.

I was told how disgusting it was to bury human excrement, and that all travellers should carry their own portable toilets.

Whilst my point was that we needed toilets at the Tip before more infrastructure was built to get more people there more quickly and easily, my intention wasn't to suggest that everyone should be going to the toilet at The Tip, but that many people may need to go, and if the closest facilities are back at Punsand Bay or Bamaga (or Somerset if the toilet is still there and working?), then they're going to go somewhere, and it's better to bury it than leave it blowing in the breeze on the ground. 

A n y w a y, it got me thinking. Whilst I'd always thought the proper way to toilet in the bush was to bury and burn the waste, is it? and is it feasible anymore given the numbers that now travel? (can you imagine...eeewwwww)
So my question to you is: should we be taking porta potties? Should council/government be putting in more facilities for the masses (and maintaining them)? Or should we take it out with us? in which case more dump points are needed.

I have travelled to my share of places where there are no toilets.
It’s pretty simple really. As I am sure most people on here would know.
For starters be prepared to walk way more than 10m from where you are others are camped or likely to.
Dig a hole. Do the business and burn the toilet tissue in the hole taking care to not  set fire to the bush  (it has happened to someone known to me).
Do not use wet wipes thingies, they do not burn!
Fill the hole. An animal may dig it up but they will scatter the mess and the environment quickly takes care of the rest.
If you can’t burn the tissue on site take a brown paper sandwich bag with you to hold it and bring it back to dispose in a fire or seal it in plastic bags for later disposal
I was camped in a few places in the goldfields a week or so ago and the dozen people in the group  following these rules left no trace.

I’ve always thought high volume areas like Fraser and double island - and the cape - should have a mandatory porta pot rule. Too many people.

I have for some years now carried a porta pottie everywhere I go , saves me walking into the scrub and standing on someones s#!t .

We also carry a chemical toilet....mainly to get used to it as it’s starting to become a requirement more and more.

I reckon it should be mandatory in places like Fraser, Inskip, Teewah.

When we do need dig a hole we always burn the paper before filling in the whole.

When camping with a group we used to dig more of a communal hole 3 to 4 feet deep

Do you thing, burn the paper then throw and inch or 2 of dirt over it and so on

Im not sure environmentally if this is right or wrong but it was better than having land mines everywhere

Sadly in many places in the outback you struggle to dig more than a few inches without a pick. But even a shallow scrape  is better than nothing.

Some are just too lazy for even that.

Trust me when you are camping with 6 guys living on nothing but fish and Carlton Drought 3 to 4 feet is STILL not enough

Camping with 3 girls, I have no choice but to carry a chemical toilet.
But then again if I didn't they might not come and it will just be me and the boy.
Actually i agree with others tat it should be mandatory in certain places.
I have only been to Teewah once and the place stunk from camping on others waste.
Never to return again.

Hi,
   When the kids were young at various longer term camps, I would put down a hole with an earth auger to about 700mm. With a diameter of about 250mm, it would hold every thing from a week or so.
I once re opened and used last year's shaft and found only sweet smelling soil and a few bits of plastic liner. Completely composted in 12 months.

I think ports-potties are a good idea. Seeing the amount of loo paper etc at Poeppel Corner was disgusting Sure, digging a hole and doing it right the old fashioned way isn’t hard... but people just don’t do that!

I use a fold out toilet seat, similar to the cheapo camping chairs except there's a hole in the top. Home away from home. Folds up into a small bag.
I think $20 from BCF. I love it.

My wife has (or at least had) video proof from CCTV at a supermarket that lifting your skirt is optional. True story, a middle aged woman was walking down the aisle and dropped a fully formed stink bomb in the middle of the aisle, without so much as missing a step, and casually walked along and continued with her shopping.
