Cost of Diesel
« on: September 06, 2017, 11:13:09 AM »
Been lucky enough to have just been on a trip from Melbourne to Katherine, across the Savannah Way to Normanton, up the Cape, Cairns, Atherton Tablelands, Hughenden, Winton, Longreach and then down the Kidman Way back to Melbourne, about 12,000 kms. Great trip but I was intrigued by the changing price of diesel. Just to give you some idea, here are some of the towns and prices where we topped up.

Melbourne     $1.26
Coober Pedy  $1.46
Alice Springs  $1.30  (3 years ago it was $1.79)
Katherine      $1.20
Borroloola     $1.53
Coen             $1.60  (dearest of the trip)
Weipa            $1.42
Cooktown      $1.33
Blackall        $1.24
Darlington Point (near Griffith $1.19 and cheapest on trip)

I would always use BP garages to fill if they were available, even if some of the other brands were cheaper. I know that the fuel companies have always given us the story that fuel is more expensive the further from major cities you get, but this certainly didn't prove correct. I also suppose that state taxes play a part in the cost. I was blown away by the price in Alice being 49c/l cheaper than the last trip, but cheesed off at the same time to think Melbournians were paying about the same price. Made me wonder who is sucking up the profits.

Just thought you might be interested.

You were lucky I have just come back from a trip through Innamincka and Camerons Corner where the price of diesel was $2 per litre.

This is what I mean about the variation, I can't quite figure it out.

About 2 weeks ago it was $1.19 (BP Ultimate) at Gin Gin.
The strange part is that it was $1.24 in Gladstone and the fuel is trucked from Gladstone to Gin Gin.
Are we being ripped off? - work it out for yourselves.

I filled up today in Brisbane and it was $1.31. So some of the prices on the original post are very good.

Just ducked to the shops and my local servo (Perth's inner south)  has diesel cheaper that ULP! 131.9 to 137. something. Rare event.

But if I drive about 5km further out it will be cheaper again. Don't ask me why.

Off to the Murchison region for a longish weekend tomorrow. I travel via Northam and Goomalling to Dalwallinu to dodge the big trucks  and will    fill at Wongan Hills where it is usually a bit cheaper than the Great Northern Highway. Don't ask me why.

1.30 in Alice? Im Surprised as I have not found it under 1.36 with discount for many months.
Many years ago I was told by some in petrochemical industry freight accounts for only cents in pricing. I know in Darwin (from some reports)the retailer are getting more like 30 c profit a litre, where many other city retailers are getting 6-9 c profit a litre. Of course out bush often smaller more rugged vehicles are making smaller deliveries, so Mt Dare is definitely paying more than Yulara.

interesting how the discussion about fuel prices always end up that it's too expensive.

They go out into the middle of a desert and drill a hole thousands of feet into the ground to find the oil, then they pump it thousands of feet up to the surface and pump it into some storage tanks, then they pump it out of those tanks and into a pipe, then they pump it hundreds of kilometres across a desert and pump it into some storage tanks, then they pump it out of the storage tanks and into a ship, then they transport it in a ship thousands of kilometres across an ocean, then they pump it out of the ships and into some storage tanks, then they pump it through a refinery, process it, and pump it back into some other storage tanks, then they pump it out of those storage tanks and into a truck, then the truck transports it thousands of kilometres out into the middle of Australia, then they pump it out of the truck and into some storage tanks in the ground, so that we can come along and pump it out of the ground and into our car...........for $1.50 a litre......... and bitch about how expensive it is

Milk, all they have to do is squeeze a cows tit and it's $2.50 a litre.................and we don't think anything of it

Water falls from the sky for free, but that same service station sells it for $3.00 for 600ml.....................but we still buy it ???????

Go figure  ???

Sorry but some people need to leave their, why is petrol more expensive than in the city, mentality at home.

Petrol prices will always vary, depending on when they topped up, the amount they purchase from the fuel supplier, freight costs etc. Why are some places cheaper than others who knows but really who cares.

You buy a 4wd that costs money to run, spend money to deck it out to tour, buy a camper / van to travel with and then complain about fuel prices to explore remote areas.

Honestly, just stay home and complain ;D

Ps not having a go at the OP but we hear it all the time.

I only know what I have paid for fuel remote because I log purchases for fuel consumption etc. I never complain.

I don't record   the price of that other essential: beer.

Another thing that annoys me is that in Perth diesel is usually more expensive than ULP but once you get outside the metro area its the other way around, could be a supply and demand thing I suppose.

Hi Ian, I've been observing Perth prices and agree. I filled up in Albany last week before coming up and paid $1.22 for Diesel but see it advertised for a $1.32 here.
Thankfully with the Grand Cherokee I can get on average (including Perth running) 1156 klm from a tank. Tomorrow i'll make it to William's where i'll fill up and it's also $1.22
My wife's Gen5 Liberty takes 98 premium & that's $1.48 in Albany

Diesel doesn't fluctuate to much plus or minus 10-20 cents depending on where you are on the day, however it does go up and down over a few weeks.
Unleaded however varies enormously. I paid $1.03 in brisbane 2 weeks ago, the other side of town was 1.29. I use motormouth app to compare fuel
In emerald and tieri I pay $1.40 - $1.48 for the same fuel

I wasn't complaining at all about the cost of the fuel overall, in fact what I meant to say was that the price had dropped considerably over the last few years (Alice as an example). I was more than pleasantly surprised by how cheap it was.

What I was trying to point out was that I didn't understand why fuel in Melbourne was only a few cents cheaper than fuel in the middle of the country. For years I have heard the 'tyranny of distance' argument when fuel sold quite close to the metro area was considerably more expensive than the city, but this trip changed my viewpoint. The last thing that would cross my mind would be to stay at home because the price of fuel was too high.

Oh, and I ended paying $75 for a block of 30 cans because we were running out, and before you start, this is not going to keep me at home either.

I also didn’t think this thread was about complaining about fuel prices, but rather discuss different prices around Australia.

Sure fuel prices get bought up every couple of months, but it’s no different to discussing the same topic around a campfire.  If no one ever rehashed the same topic, there would be a lot of silence when sitting around a fire drinking our beers. Plus there wouldn’t be any fishing stories

Prices are going steadily up, but it doesn’t stop me doing trips or downgrading a shoe box sized car.
