Insurance for CT contents
« on: November 15, 2016, 03:37:02 PM »
Hi,

I was just going through our insurance cover for our CT as I was not happy with the contents cover. In the process I found out that our insurance company doesn't actually cover the loss any contents for CTs, only for caravans. So I've had a look around and couldn't find anyone who would insure our CT contents against loss.

Does anyone have such a coverage, and where? And what is your insured value? I did some sketchy sums and found our's to contain about $5k work of stuff in it. Is that reasonable or crazy?

Cheers,
T

BTW, I've had a look at the other threads but couldn't find anything recent and relevant, happy to be proven wrong though  ;D

I will have to check but I am sure my AAMI coverage only covers $1000.

NRMA said I could specify a contents amount recently when I rang up for a quote.

Add your items under the unsecured valuables portion of your home and contents insurance.

tryagain,

Reading through their PDS it looks like NRMA does not cover the contents of CT, only of caravans. Unfortunately.

I have done it through Apia...   but it was a big hassle and not at all straight forward....  (for instance I had to speak with a manager to get specific dollar items eg a $3K National Luna fridge and $2K worth of Purple Line etc noted on the policy .....   left to their own devices -- none of this (and more); would have been noted or covered).....

I am with CIL

We are covered for contents which I added at an agreed amount.

BUT

only when the trailer or content is secured ie closed. That means that we are covered for out contents in case of total trailer theft or if it catches fire. But any theft while the trailer is open and the items are not in a lockable secure box are not covered.

I think you may find that most insurance companies wont cover contents under canvas, so even if you had a caravan they wouldnt cover contents stored in the annex.

Just had a read of their PDS and it's as clear as mud. I haven't actually insured with them but probably will.

When I rang up to get a quote for my "camper trailer" the person I spoke to said they come under the same policy as caravans (so when it say's caravans it also goes for camper trailers). In their definition, however, it looks like my camper trailer would actually be a "tent-trailer" but the only place tent-trailer is listed is in the definitions so not sure what that means.

It looks clear that things in a canvas annex wouldn't be covered but in the main bit is less so. I only got a quote/cover note but didn't go ahead so will have to ring them up again and clarify everything.

You would think that if you insured for additional contents in the camper trailer you have specified to them that they would cover it barring their specified exclusions, but they are an insurance company so who knows.

My partner is a finance guru so when i got our new camper she said do a spreadsheet and compare apples with apples. For someone (me) who is hopeless with fine print and technical stuff it opened my eyes to what you actually get and what you miss out on.

I have done it through Apia...   but it was a big hassle and not at all straight forward....

I looked at swapping all of our insurance across to APIA as they're supposed to be so good for seniors ??? Started checking reviews though & it appears that they're an absolute pack of sod's when it comes to paying out on claims  >:(, so still looking.

Just had a read of my RACQ "caravan" policy & they will cover contents (unfixed furniture, domestic goods [pots, pans, glasses], clothing or personal effects) & valuables (jewellery, watches, portable electronic equipment & computers; but not cash, cards, mobiles, gem stones or sporting equipment) inside your "caravan", but won't cover anything that's in the annex or if there's no signs of forced entry.

No mention of CT or definition of what is a caravan & what isn't.

Limit is $500 after you pay relevant excess eg if your $1800 fridge goes (from inside the van & there's forced entry visible), & you have a $600 excess, they pay $500 & you pay the remaining $700  :'( If it goes from under the annex, or off the fridge slide, too bloody bad  >:(

Methinks is time to investigate options for CT insurance!

One issue people have had in the past is that the trailers are not being defined as "CAMPER TRAILERS"... but Trailers..

Looking through the CIL PDS, they mention that they "do not provide cover for contents in a trailer.". Yet they don't define what a trailer is.

I'll give them a call later to find out how they see things, whether a camper trailer is more of a trailer or a caravan for them.

Cheers,
T

OK, I just spoke to CIL regarding their contents cover. They do classify a camper trailer as caravan, with the exception of contents cover.

As I was told on the phone, while they cover contents in a packed up camper trailer, they don't cover the contents for theft if it's in a canvas camper trailer that's setup as that's easy to slice open and is considered unsafe. Not sure what GROB's situation is like.

So better than what I have now and probably the best I can get.

Thanks for all the input,
T

That's what I thinking... for a padlock that small for zippers - side cutters would work... or a steak knife into the canvas!

With the canvas loophole they all rely on ...  I asked the question:  "what about pop tops - they are part canvas / vinyl at the top ## are they covered??"   .....  Apia said "yes"...

But as mentioned above ## I believe the PDS are rigged to give them plenty of room to void claims; particularly in instances of bulk volume of claims ....

For instance ## there is a loophole that if your van is parked near a tree and is damaged in a storm from a falling tree ## then you are not covered. ...  etc  etc....

I was told but not to worry ## we would pay your claim ## Then he quoted a story about a big storm event that occurred in Newcastle ## where most claims got denied....

## This guy, (a senior claims assessor); finally said ## "look, here's my direct number and my staff ID ## if you ever have to make a claim; make sure you get through to me" ##

Buying contents insurance on camper insurance is like buying damage insurance for a computer from the shop - a complete rip-off.

I'll say it again once more - there is an unsecured valuables section in you home and contents insurance. List out the big items and have a lump sum for small items.

They could give a rat's arse where your 'UNSECURED VALUABLES' are when you lose them.

It costs us $40 odd a year extra for all the crap in the car and the camper.

I have driven company vehicles insured by others for years which are filled with my stuff. This is the way our broker set up cover for all our stuff. That it translates to camping gear as well as work gear is just a bonus.

This is the better way of doing it bar a couple of caveats, $40/yr is about a third of the prices I normally get (for about $4000 worth of contents) the additional excess you will have to pay in the event of making a claim for theft/damage etc.

Our big ticket items (2nd fridge primarily) are covered by the car insurance, even if not in the car at the time.  I've also worked out how I can essentially lock the storage on the camper with the tent up, and it seemed to be acceptable to in the insurer...
