So anyone here into importing - how do you ensure that gaskets dont contain asbestos?
Brakes - easy,
Clutch - easy...
Seals and headgasket etc ??? surely not everyone importing cars is doing full engine rebuilds or dumping the donk before importing ???

https://www.infrastructure.gov.au/vehicles/imports/asbestos.aspx

Vehicles that were not specifically manufactured for the Australian market might be considered at risk of containing asbestos. You are responsible for ensuring your vehicle does not contain any asbestos before you or your supplier ship it to Australia. Common high risk parts and components include gaskets, brake pads, seals and clutch linings and may be more likely to be present in older vehicles.

I am not a "car" guy. Normally so long as it gets me from A to B that is all that matters. Yeh I know I know.

How cool would it be to deliver rocking horses, with logos on the door, in that beast. Mmmm maybe I can hock the house.

I was talking to the importer of our car a little while back.
They take a small scraping from an exposed bit of head gasket and sometimes, exhaust gaskets.

The only car at the time to fail the head gasket, was a Datsun 240Z, so they pulled the head, dumped the gasket and it was fine.
Once the car has the correct certification in the US, it will breeze through customs here.
Autos are good, as it removes the clutch plate issue.

If you use the correct people, its not half as hard as people make out.

Yes, there were extrme cases early on, but all seems to have settled now.

There is no way in hell, you will import that for $4,000 either.

Depending on location and access to the shipping port, allow $7,000 to $9,000.... remember, I've already done it once.

Its over size too, so I'd work on $9,000 AUD.
Don't forget, the $8,500 is USD, so that will blow out a bit too.

It's not just old vehicles either There's been a few new Chinese vehicles with asbestos parts which a couple of the large manufacturers including Great Wall and cherry brought into the country the rules over there means if something has less than 10% asbestos it's not considered asbestos. We have had a couple of jobs recently clearing asbestos products from Chinese importers.

Correct..... most of the new stuff will have a warning sticker tucked away in some stupid spot to warn mechanics they are dicking around with asbestos

Yep, the set course from willowbank to warwick and return is around 650 klm. (so, in other words, the long way)
judging by the constant rumble of lumpy V8 motors in Leyburn all this arvo and tonight, my guess is the course goes through Leyburn or they have some sort of check in point at the Leyburn Hotel?...been hearing numerous V8’s  for hours now from our camp here, about 4 more just rolled into town a few minutes ago.

approx conversion......say $12500 AUD, plus the $9000 shipping, say $22000 AUD landed with no other cost implications it would be worth it............ ;D

$4000 to import my old tank about 3 years ago.$1800 shipping with Schumacher shipping and $2200 here in quarantine steam cleaning which was a bs karcher wash in what looked like a scrap yard and customs fees including gst abd import taxes. Landed into melbourne rracked it all way from the usa using ship tracker. Its an easy process.

Where do you work?

Here, at the moment - I run all of Recarbs online sales stuff, package conversion kits up and mail them out etc. and when I've got all that covered I help the workshop techs with carb strip downs and rebuilds, fitment, tuning etc.

Good shop to know if you have a vehicle with a carb (or three). The owner Dave knows his stuff.

The orange Monaro just turned up again to have the manual choke on its Holley converted to automatic.
