Cooper tyres and Mickey thompson tyres - suggestions please
« on: September 12, 2016, 12:10:43 PM »
Hi,
We have a new dual cab Hilux and will be relocating to the Pilbara again at the end of this year.  The hilux is 100% stock at this stage, but we will be starting to spend some money on some mods so that it can become another tourer for us.  As the title suggests I am looking at getting some cooper or mickey Thompson tyres, the reason for these two is that my dad has a warehouse full of them as they are the distributor for them where i live and he can get whatever tyres i want from these two manufactures at a very good price.

So having never had either of these brands im looking for suggestions from those who have and what will be suited best for us, we will be spending plenty of time out in Karijini again and the Kimberley, millstream NP and general off road touring, some driving over rocks in the pilbara to access some spots, but generally just dirt roads and beach driving that most of us drive on our adventures.

Thanks

Theres quite a few threads on these tyres lately...

I think most would go ATZ P3's long before any Coopers.

YMMV

I don't know what difference there is between them.. and since you can replace at a good price.. that's not a concern either.. give 4 of the one a go and then 4 of the other and give us all feedback. All I know is that buying tyres in Tom Price was hideously expensive compared to Perth !

I'm another vote for Mickey Thompson.

My last set of AT 4 rib were looked after, rotated (including spare) every 10,000kms and I got 90,000kns out if them.

Very impressed and will be staying with Mickey

On my second set of MTs. These are a STZ now done 35k much of that towing, and just came through the cape leveque, and the gibb, plus plenty of other work. They still look like they have +60% of tread.

I'm a fan.

Coopers seem to be a love hate tyre. People either swear by them or hate them.

Has anyone got the new MTZ P3 yet??

Looking at a set of these vs the STT pro or BFG KM2 as weekend play tyres.

Interesting topic. I have had Cooper AT's on my old GQ and couldn't kill them. I took one set off at 130000 ks cause they went hard and very noisy. I also had some slip sliding episodes. I replaced them with Bridgestone AT 694 which were much quieter but quite good both on road and off road.
My current GU ute came with Cooper AT3's which so far are performing ok except for mud when they turn to slicks. So far I have had 3 sets of Coopers and not had one issue with them. Saying that the next set probably won't be Coopers. Might try something else.  KM2 might be the go.

if your going play tyres, get something decent like Simexs or something aggressive.. hardly worth the effort changing AT to MT... been there done that before.

Thanks for the enlightenment.

'Play' for me means weekends away exploring the high country with family, not chest beating and seeking out bog holes.

A set of KM2 or STT pro should fit the bill with acceptable road manners and good performance if the tracks slick up thanks to rain.

My current AT's are great in the high country, but like all AT they struggle in wet clay and mud, I had duratracs on my old patrol which were far better in mud then my current toyos.

So again I ask, does anyone have a set of the MTZ P3's or STT pro yet???

I put a set of coopers AT's on my last car. The lasted & performed well, but I got caught in Katherine needing to replace a couple (4 punctures in 4 days). If I wanted to buy Coopers tyres in eather Katherine or Darwin, it was going to be $520 per tyre, and I would have to wait 3 days for them to come up from Adelaide.

I looked around the shopping centre carpark in town, and every 4wd there had Bridgestone duelers. They were $250 each, and available straight away from any tyre shop in the area. So I bought the cheap Bridgestones.

My new car came with Coopers.................but when the time comes, I'll be replacing them with something I know I can get anywhere.

My learning was .......... If you are planning any sort of extended or remote travelling, buy what ever tyres are going to be the easiest to source from just about anywhere, or you run the risk of having to pay a premium, and being stuck waiting for you premium tyre to be shipped in.

I once asked the tyre guy at William Creek what the tyre of choice in the area was. He said "the cheapest, cause the stones out here don't care about brand names".

Great advice spada that makes perfect sense.

Some of us are a bit hamstrung by OEM 18inch wheels.

You can't get a D697 (excellent touring tyre) to suit my vehicle, it came with D693 from the factory but in a 265/70/18 its a real oddball size and its not LT construction.

A lot of 200series owners are going to the new KO2 and this tyre in 285/65/18 is the perfect OD to the stock tyre. Hopefully due to its popularity it will be relatively easy to get a hold of in small towns,  I doubt any small town tyre shop would keep stock in this size though. My local shops in Wagga don't keep these sizes in stock!!

I have found in the last 2 n half years since i have owned my car that there's more choice in 18's now and they are much cheaper than when I first bought the car.

You can get coopers and micky T's in most towns up here - you pay nicely for the privilage however :) Im in Tom Price so one of the smaller towns and the biggest tyre dealer here stocks mainly coopers

I've got Cooper STT Pro's in a 265/75/16.  I've done 10000kms so far.  Did a couple of wet trips over winter with a bit of mud and clay.  No complaints.  On my BT50 you can hear the hum.  On road I've been very impressed, especially in the wet, compared to my old tyres, Bridgestone M/T.  Same speeds and driving they're much better, IMO.

Back to Karratha mate, spent a few years there, can't wait to get back, have missed it since the day we left, although ive been FIFO to Onslow for the last 4 years, but its not the same as living in karratha.  bonus is we still have our group of friends there and my wife loved every minute of living there.

The only thing with the Mickeys is that they are noisy. I have had ATZ in both 4 rib and P3 and MTZ all having a loud hum, although the MTZ was surprisingly the quietest of the 3. I have gone with BFG AT KO2 this time and they make no noticeable noise.

That was going to be my next question regarding noise.  I've always had BFG and loved them.  pitty the old man doesn't have them in his warehouse.

Spent around 6 odd years in Karratha myself and still got a few people left there that we know as well. Only recently moved back to the Pilbara after 4 years in Perth, couldnt wait to move back as well.

MTZ P3s on me triton playing in snow, ice, thick mud and torrential rain. Have yet to be disapointed, and I'm a harsh critic for tyres. Yep, a tad noisy but not too loud I can't live with it. They eject mud way better than the bridgy 697 and cooper at3s I've run in the past on a pajero, and I would go so far as to say the p3s have the same road manners.
When I got the p3s fitted the tyre bloke sez the most road worthy tyre he changes out are coopers saying that generaly the tyres are not meeting peoples expectations. Take from that what you will. I deliberated over coops and mickeys and researched til my eyes bleed. At the end of the day you get good and bad reviews on both. I just found more possitive reviews on the mickeys. Oh and Bird sez he runs them, and he can't be wrong...........can he?
