At some point (or points) in a 2 year trip the weather would turn to poo.....
This is a very valid point, and I just couldn't imagine being stranded for a couple of days with kids inside a damp KK, I have tremors just thinking about it. Don't just think it is only bad weather that forces you inside either. Over the years we have had flies (both bushies and March), mossies, and sandstorms which have forced us to take cover in the camper to escape.
On a particularly bad day on the Strzelecki Track we pushed in behind some dunes for the night in 40+C heat. As soon as we set up camp the flies arrived and were unbelievably aggressive. We used nets, spray, and anything we could think of to kill the blighters. Finally we retreated and then spent the first half hour killing the critters that had entered the camper with us. Believe me it was hot. Finally, and mercifully, the sun set and we breathed a sigh of relief. When the constant drone of the flies abated a bit, I dashed out to start cooking dinner. While sliding out the kitchen I was hit by about a dozen mossies that felt like small eagles. Offering a small profanity or two, I slammed the kitchen shut, grabbed the bread and filling, and scrambled back into the camper, not to emerge until dawn. All I had to do then was worry about how I was to get over the dune to get out.
As a thought, the wife suggested you take a walled gazebo with you that would offer protection from a lot of the elements and give you a bit more room.
