Kimberely Kamper Hard Floor
« on: July 17, 2016, 04:51:02 PM »
Hello all,

We are heading off on our 2 year trip towards the end of this year and are currently looking at a Kimberley platinum. We have 2 kids (4&7) that will sleep on the floor on stretchers.

Have any other families done the same thing with a Kimberley or hard floor kamper? We think that at the end of the day we would only use the inside for sleeping mostly anyway.

thoughts?

Hello sjl, we have a 2002 KK, the hard floor might get a little cluttered with two full size stretchers on it (180mm long at least), can you buy kid size stretchers ?

Would they sleep in a kid size double swag as an alternative.

The KK is good gear, tracks w/o fault on any surface, corrugations etc - ours travels smoother than the ute, can't feel it there  ;D

Nothing wrong with a Kimberley (we have one) but, there is a new Complete Campsite Fraser XTE it has a larger floor area for stretcher beds.
They have a video out on them.

We run a stretcher bunk in out Kimberly just keep it to one side for short stays for linger stays we have a zip on bedroom which keeps the hard floor clear and the stretchers fit nicely in the 2nd room

I reckon 2 years on the road in a Kimberley (or any other hard floor) with a family of 4 might stretch things a bit (ok, a lot).....

We have a 13 year old and a 9 year old that sleep on the hard floor of our KK on single sized self inflating mattresses in their sleeping bags. We put some marine carpet down that gets stored on the bed first thing when we open up the camper, so that the floor stays warm for them, feels nicer under foot also. We have the extra bedroom that goes on the camper, but rarely use it unless we plan to be somewhere for longer then say a week. In saying this, the longest trip we have done so far was 5 weeks in Tasmania like that. Kids will sleep just about anywhere, so I don't bother with stretchers or bunks....but 2 years will certainly test that theory...lol

I'd get onto gumtree/eBay and find a set of outdoor connection bunk beds. They can be stretcher beds as well. They are 1800mm long so fit perfectly across the end of a hard floor camper and are about a zillion times easier and faster to put up than other brands. We have a hard floor with 2 kids and that setup works well. The bunks fold down and go on the bed for travel.
They aren't on the market anymore but last well and are worth getting second hand. Have a good trip.

We have had a 2003 KK for a decade, which we got as our kids were progressively leaving home, great camper trailer. Almost unbreakable, apart from when you do stupid things.
From personal experience, if you are getting a 2nd hand one,  one thing I suggest you replace before you go are the shocks/struts. That's about the only thing that's failed for us in a decade and it causes more significant subsequent damage.
Unless you are getting a separate room or tent, I would think it will be too crowded. We found that in just a fortnight with two mid teenage kids. If you have a separate room or tent, then different story.
Have a great time

ok thanks guys for your thoughts. We are going to get the kids bedroom that attaches top the end of the camper but we would probably only use this for longer stays......say for about 3 days or more. Over nighters they would sleep on the hard floor.

We have had a KK for about 14 years and absolutely love it. Must say we are only a couple however.

The only issue we have had is a shocker bush gave out on the Kalumburu Road on the way back from Mitchell Falls. A feature I like that a lot of other trailers can't give is that you can still look out the rear vision mirror over the top of the trailer, although this will depend on how much stuff you pack in the tug.

I don't think you will be disappointed with the Kimberley.

We have had a KK for about 3 years now. We have 3 kids and have done numerous trips away in it. Personally we couldn't do more than a month in it together. If I was planning a trip like yours I wouldn't even think about camping under canvas for that long. I love our camper and when we eventually do our first lap the cook and I will take it. But with the family it would not be an option for us. Please this is just my opinion and it means nothing to anyone else.

Super happy mate have had it 12 months yesterday and spent a total of 8 weeks away in it including a 3 week trip to Fraser and mid north coast from Melbourne hoping  to do a bigger trip over the next 18 months for 4-6 months with kids in tow and not concerned one bit

At some point (or points) in a 2 year trip the weather would turn to poo.....

I have 2 kids and use bedroom extension on longer stay or wet weather. There are 2 types of bedroom,I use the wedge shaped one. Other times  kids use hard floor in swags which they roll up in morn and put to one side.

We are on our second KK and seriously like them. I also have two kids that sleep on the hard floor on foam self inflating mattresses with quality sleeping bags. However if i was contemplating a trip with a two year duration I would seriously look at a caravan or a cross over type arrangement. Whilst a KK is simpler to set up than some campers it is still a considerable effort if you are going to be doing it for such an extended period. Also in my opinion just by design anything that is slightly complex is more likely to have issues that a simpler arrangement (Such as towing a white box that requires no setting up)

I would trade in my KK to do your trip. 3 - 6 months I could handle......maybe.....just. But thats just me  ;D

Jas

At some point (or points) in a 2 year trip the weather would turn to poo.....

This is a very valid point, and I just couldn't imagine being stranded for a couple of days with kids inside a damp KK, I have tremors just thinking about it. Don't just think it is only bad weather that forces you inside either. Over the years we have had flies (both bushies and March), mossies, and sandstorms which have forced us to take cover in the camper to escape.

On a particularly bad day on the Strzelecki Track we pushed in behind some dunes for the night in 40+C heat. As soon as we set up camp the flies arrived and were unbelievably aggressive. We used nets, spray, and anything we could think of to kill the blighters. Finally we retreated and then spent the first half hour killing the critters that had entered the camper with us. Believe me it was hot. Finally, and mercifully, the sun set and we breathed a sigh of relief. When the constant drone of the flies abated a bit, I dashed out to start cooking dinner. While sliding out the kitchen I was hit by about a dozen mossies that felt like small eagles. Offering a small profanity or two, I slammed the kitchen shut, grabbed the bread and filling, and scrambled back into the camper, not to emerge until dawn. All I had to do then was worry about how I was to get over the dune to get out.

As a thought, the wife suggested you take a walled gazebo with you that would offer protection from a lot of the elements and give you a bit more room.

A hard floor with the annexe put up in inclement weather is one of the better places to be. The 21 ft van we used to hire had a roll out awning that used to thrash about so much we had to put it away when the weather went to custard. And it didn't have walls. We had 11 people in the annex of the hard floor playing cards last week during a storm no problems.
I would look for a different trailer for a 2 year trip. There's heaps more storage in a van for all the toys and stuff.

We believe 12-18 months in the kk doing the more remote areas of aus then would potentially sell and get a caravan style camper for the east coast which is more caravan park orientated
