Audi Q7. Thoughts?
« on: July 16, 2016, 03:22:30 PM »
We were looking at upgrading the current tow vehicle.

But since we don't really tow offroad, we were looking at an immaculate pearl white Audi Q7 with all the fruit for $52k. 2012 model with a 3.0l V6 turbo diesel.

Looking at keeping my car for the annual Fraser trip and off-roading, and trade the wife's Suzuki Vitara in.

We have never had a non-jap car, so getting something like the Audi is new to us, but bugger me, it's a great car.

Thoughts?

Audi's in general are well engineered and well built, they share a lot of parts across the whole VAG group, VW, Skoda, Audi, Porsche. The Q7 is a great comfy touring vehicle for the bitumen. Parts and/or service out of CBD can be non existent. Find a good non-dealer mechanic, the dealers will gouge you big $$$ for service as it is out of warranty. Also you could use him to inspect the vehicle and let you know what it is like. I've owned 2 Audi's in warranty, never had a problem with either of them that I didn't inflict, smoked clutches etc.

IMO Audi have been at the top of their game of the past few years but just be prepared that if something were to go wrong you may hurt at the price of parts. Totally agree with D4D in regards to steering clear of stealership servicing though as they're tear you a new you know what. The 3ltr motor is a great engine

The Q7, VW Touareg & Porsche Cayenne are co-models out of Slovakia.   My Touareg had the 3 litre V6 TDI.   It was a great motor for towing.

Just went through an exercise comparing potential cost of ownership of an older A4 wagon for our eldest. It was pointed out by several mechanics near us who service Audis that the Audi symbol represents that amount of money you'll have left after you've serviced it if you get a bad one. Even standard services had almost double the parts cost of a Jap unless you sourced the parts yourself from the UK. For my son, we bought a Subaru.

Does the 2012 Q7 have a multiplexed electrical system? This could add cost and limit the number of autoelecs who can reliably add/fix things.

I can fully understand why the Audis are tempting. Look and drive very nicely. Go into it with your eyes open, get a specialist check, find a trusted local mechanic and enjoy the ride. The horror stories are on the Internet to find. The happy owners don't post, just like most other cars.

I was in the UK, the people I was working with all had BMW, Mercedes and Audi's.

They are like Commodores, Falcons and Camery's here.

I wish we had that problem.

Righto, a good mate had one, paid $125,000 for the ABT V6 diesel model 2011. Went to trade it in for a 200 series VX got offered $42,000 after 4 years of ownership. He said it was a nicer car than the 200 but after 3 trips to townsville on a flat bed truck from Mackay. One was for an engine replacement as it spun a main bearing and another trip was for a new alternator. He said it was costing him a fortune as it only could be serviced in Townsville, and $6000 for front rotors and pads.
Regards
Angus.

The figure I came across for front brakes was $4750 from Audi. Guy bought the parts aftermarket for $890 and fitting was straightforward. Still expensive and I just couldn't be bothered.

On my Touareg they were Brembo's as a standard fitting.   I presume the Audi and Porsche are the same..   I was told the discs need replacing every second time you change the pads.    I was quoted a couple of grand.   (Un) fortunately I drowned the car before getting it booked in for the job.
