What is your realistic dream job?
« on: June 08, 2016, 09:15:37 PM »
Hey everyone. I was just sitting in bed. With five minutes to my self for the first time in the day. And I was thinking about jobs and what I want to to do for a living. I thought it might be a good topic for discussion. I'll go first.

Currently I am employed as a heavy diesel mechanic. But I also do painting and body work on the fleet of trucks. And electronics and computers as a hobby. I have never really known what I actually wanted to do for a job, as I only took this job. (Started as an apprenticeship) as I was unemployed and the opportunity showed. But I'm only at the age of 26 and I know already that I won't be doing this all my life as my knees, back, elbows, hands won't last. Some days I feel 86 years old.

But I think I've figured out my dream job. Restoring and maintaining vintage and classic cars. As I really love old cars. The older and stranger the better.

Unfortunately that will probably never be a reality as there wouldn't be enough money in it to survive. The same goes for farming. Like my father he has a cane farm. Which I wouldn't mind that lifestyle, But at the end of the day. There is no money in it. (Which to me says a lot about the direction of this country.)

Any way enough rambling. Time to hear from some of you guys. Some of which probably have a lot more experience with life then I do so far.

I've always wanted to paint. Not walls, but Australian art maybe.

If you're doing something you absolutely love, it can either be the best thing in the world and the $ don't matter, as long as you can survive and not be broke, or you can end up hating it as it can turn into a stressful thing on a daily basis.

I did what i thought was my dream job(cop), quit after 4 years, hated it.

I've tried too many jobs to count, still looking for what i want to do, which gets harder as you get older.

Understand where you are coming from.

I am now retired but have had some great jobs in my past. Although spent some years as a public servant I have been in - and out over my whole career.

Worked for the mining industry when out and travelled Australia and saw and experienced lots including what became Kakadu National Park when we called it a uranium province. This got me interested in flying so I got a pilots licence.

This then enabled me to work for the old aviation department and I set up their first safety promotion unit. I flew aeroplanes and made safety videos all over the country.

This is what has inspired my love for outback Australia and has resulted in my buying my Prado and Cub on retirement in Sept 2013. I am now enjoying this wonderful country all over again from a lower altitude.

Message from me is to just take risks and go and do it.

Have my dream job as a merchant seafarer..been on the water since I was a young lad but its all being taken away from us. Its hard to compete with foreign labour wages. We have lost so many ships off our coast its not funny at all! My next dream job will be to work for the local council I reckon..working outdoors and varied jobs each day to keep it interesting..and no more FIFO.

Only a few years ago I was in what i thought was my dream job Licensed Aircraft Maintenance Engineer for an icon. Then as you would all know one of the biggest industrial disputes this country has had occurred. I lost my faith in the industry. I went into management with a large company that I thought was my dream job. This soon changed and I was not happy. It has taken almost a year but I am about to start what i hope is my dream job for the later part of my career.

As Terry said Take risks, I took one to leave an industry after 24 years and took another only last month when I went from a market leader to a job with their number one competitor and take them to the number one spot.

What we are doing working and traveling Australia. If you dont like a job you quit and look for the next job. No pressure with mortgages, not stuck in a dead end job,  just keep traveling this great country.

We have seen places we thought we would never.

McGirr I really envy your lifestyle. Too many pressures these days with mortgages and bill after bill etc. My wife and I have said that once our girls finish school and arent reliant on us we will pack up and chase the sun around the country. No stresses and as youve said if you dont like a job, just head off to the next town. Hats off to you mate, you are definately living the dream in my eyes!

Mate your not alone, I've been in the game for long enough to see it change and not all for the better. I am truly worried about what jobs are safe for our kids these days.

For all reading these posts please vote these Liberal clowns out so that our kids have a chance to work in their own country and not have to watch over their shoulders at who is knocking on our shores.

Id like to be the dude that tests stuff.

We need you to test and evaluate the new KTM 350 EXC and submit a report. Oh, you have it for six weeks. Um, yea, ok.......

New Seadoo RXP 300. Oh, ok, if I have to.

Here is a Kedron off road van. We will pay you to tow it to Perth and back using our 200. You have 4 weeks to complete the trip, then another week to submit your report. Ok, if I really have to.

Or,

House Husband.

Get up, wife taps me on the shoulder for a quicky before she heads off to work.
3 minutes later, up making lunches and breakfasts for the tribe.
Drops kids off at school, hit the gym with the other MILF house wives.
Come home, make beds, clean kitchen, hang washing out.
Hit the shed, service the fleet of dirt bikes and jet ski.
Make lunch, crack beer, snooze, pick up kids, home work, cook dinner, bed time.......

26 years working for the ADF, I'm more than happy to take over household work.

No stress and you are your own boss.

I still haven't worked out what I want to do when I grow up.  I had thought about asking Parks and Wildlife to let me study tidal sand movement on Fraser Island.
I would need a provided vehicle (to my specs)? and housing, plus a decent salary.
Then I would drive onto the island. At Hook Point I would mark 10 grains of sand with a   permanent marker pen.
Then drive to Sandy Cape and see how long it takes for them to get there....
However I've got some other great ideas now from this thread.
Brothel owner... Tester of new toys.... House husband..
All may work for me.
Always give 100%... Unless you are giving blood.. then it may not go so well...

I have just retired from my dream job to care for my wife.

I was at Cobb + Co Museum in Toowoomba where I got to do what I do for fun on weekends ( woodturning, woodwork & blacksmithing).  Visitors to the museum have a viewing platform into the carriage factory & part of the job was talking to visitors. Certainly met some interesting people who had done some fascinating stuff.

I will probably be back there as a volunteer in the future.

But I think I've figured out my dream job. Restoring and maintaining vintage and classic cars. As I really love old cars. The older and stranger the better.

I don't reckon it'd be as much fun as you think. I reckon the more you worked on old cars, the more you'd begin to hate them.

What's a passion as a hobby, generally isn't much fun as a profession, from what I've seen anyhow.
With enough horse power, sheer ignorance and a total lack of respect for your vehicle, you'll get through....
