That oh crap moment off road when a camera was handy.
« on: May 08, 2016, 07:52:08 PM »
G'day All.

Starting a post of the moment we like to forget off road.

This one was of my 80 series cruiser at Nolan's Brook after she had a hydraulic lock-up.

We got it out (water halfway up in the Cruiser) and then to Bamaga for a $3500 trip back to Cairns on the ship.

Turned out that when the owners before me fitted the snorkel, they did the hose clamp up to tight and it caused a crack at the bottom of the air box where the hose spigot fits. looks fine from the inside and you can't see it until you remove the snorkel and air box.

Last crossing of our trip too and the crossing before was higher water but a solid ground so we had momentum to get us through. Nolan's was sand and slow, with the vacuum pressure of a diesel under revs, once the water came up in the engine bay, good night for the Cruiser.

Turned out ok in the long run, Insurance wrote it off and I bought in back, cut her into a dual cab and re-built the engine and the whole vehicle (2 Con rods total were bent and she had a lot of water through her). She is now one very expensive Cruiser (re-doing the interior now).

I wont do that again, that's for sure.

Solomon Islands 1987 ish. Going up to a waterfall, drove across a creek, 5 guys in car, track gave way on opposite bank and car slid into the water slowly. Did not even break the drivers side mirror. We lifted the car and drove it out of there.

Sand bottom so had the revs up to about 2500 plus during the crossing to maintain momentum as it was very soft.

The other issue that was raised with me was the Uni Filter on the snorkel. They do a great job but I have been advised that if it is not a dusty environment take it off. They do restrict your air flow and the engine under vacuum will such air from where it can (as I discovered).

The only thing that saved my butt was that it is a gazetted road and most maps still have Nolans Brook as having a bridge (Hema seen to be one of only a few that have been updated to reflect the change).

If there was a bridge and it was passable, I would not have been covered.

The day our Defender 'Monty' died :'(   We'd survived Nolans and many other water crossings only to have this happen in an unassuming puddle, just 5 mins from home.

Gclan, It seems a common thing that these things happen at the end of an epic trip or close to home.

Feeling your pain but the water didn't get that high for me at Nolans, that muddy water would have gone through everything.

The worst part about the wet car is the bloody smell you get for weeks later not to mention the smelly mud scent as well.

Back in the 90's, Avis had the odd V8 Statesman and Fairlane do a few 1/4 mile runs too.  >:D

Good bracket cars, same time, run after run after run. (Wicked single wheeler burnouts too.)

Right rear tyre for some reason was always suspect by the end of the night.

This was a few years ago now, was a bit of an off on our way home from Landcruiser Park. I never liked that silver Cruiser anyway  ;D  ( 2H motor with an auto box, I could out run it over the first 50m ).
We all got out unscaved but obviously the 4x4 was a lost cause  ::)  , the Camp o matic was repaired, which was a testament to their build quality back then  :cup:

Not a car but a big oh Shit
Had a 5 ton chain block fail at work today
It was tagged and inspected prior to use but someone had abused it earlier
The bottom hooks bearing must have had only 1 element left in it and when it was loaded up it pulled out
Fortunately it missing everyone and the load was still grounded
Could have been very very ugly
