Ambulance cover Aus wide

Hi, has anyone got any info on Ambulance cover Australia wide. We start our big lap around August and was looking for options. We dont have private health and not that keen on getting it.

Here in SA, we accept the cover offered by any of the other states, so basically take out cover in your state and it will have you covered here in SA.  Assume it is the same in each state but not 100%.

Yea ok I'm in SA and didnt realise that we covered other states. Will have to look into if it works for other states.

We have ambulance cover in Victoria and are covered Australia wide when we travel.

We pay a small fee in our Electricity bill to make ambulance cover free in QLD.mnot really sure how that works when traveling interstate or how that works for outer state visitors requiring the ambulance in QLD.

I have Victorian Ambulance cover. I got taken away in an Ambulance from Brisbane Airport to The Prince Charles(?) Hospital, about 18 months ago.

QLD Ambulance still sent me the bill ($2,600), with instructions to forward it onto Victorian Ambulance for payment. Its one of those weird "like agency pays money to other like agencies", kinda thing...

I could have also used my Private Health insurance instead, although Ambulance Victoria was a lot less hassle I suspect.

For conditions and cost.

Private health cover only covers initial transport from incident to Emergency treatment.
If you have to be moved on by Ambulance after the initial trip. Don't expect your health fund to pay.
Because they won't.  Ring them and ask, I know what the answer will be.
Any Hospital transfers or pick up from home to go for treatment are your problem.

I have ambulance cover in QLD as part of my rates. But if I didn't I would make sure I had cover before heading off on any big trip. If you are a member of a motoring group (RACQ) or the like they may be able to provide a travel policy.

Our cover, HCF Hospital only top cover, has cover for non emergency transport of up to $5000. Need to look into whether this is enough.

My Health Insurer covers all Ambulance trips, just not patient transport.


"100% cover for ambulance services by state-appointed ambulance providers across Australia. This includes emergency services, non-emergency dispatch, mobile intensive care and air and sea ambulance services.
Transport services by Patient Transport vehicles are not ambulance services and are not claimable."

Vic ambulance cover is nation wide. It will also cover you from one hospital to another if the first cannot treat you properly. It will not cover you if you want to be moved to another hospital closer to home. It also covers air ambulance.

Never gave it a second thought....figured we live in the lucky country........and would be looked after.

I have private health but have never read what I'm covered for.

Back to the original question.

Joining your states ambulance service as a member will pay for emergency transport by ambulance to the nearest hospital able to treat your condition, no matter where your "incident" occurs within Australia. Its unlikely that it will also pay to fly you to hospital closer to your home.

My Victorian Ambulance cover for my wife and I costs $87 per annum. Chances are most state and territory ambulance member fees will be about the same.

Slightly off topic, but if you need emergency transport from work ( illness, not a work related accident) including whilst travelling to or from work, then if you are a member of a union, they might also cover you.

From the SA Ambulance web site.

Many health funds only cover emergency transport (and only in your home state).  Some provide no cover at all.
The implication is that no private health insurer covers non-emergency ambulance use.

Joining the SA Ambulance service ($155/A - Family) provides emergency cover anywhere in Australia by a kindred ambulance service (air - only if road not available)
Transport is covered to the nearest treatment facility as determined at the time.

Non-emergency cover is available via the "extras package" ($41/A)
and provides non-emergency transport between medical facilities as needed and authorised/directed by a medical professional (ie not covered if requested by you or a relative etc.)

Upon joining, emergency cover begins the next calendar day.
Non-emergency cover has a 2 month waiting period!!

Fees are:-

Emergency call out                   $918
Non-Emergency call out            $205
Treat no Transport (flat rate)   $200
Plus Kilometer charges             $5.30

So - A bit of a shock really.  Looks like I will be taking out direct cover next time we travel (well, 2 months before actually) and not blissful think we are covered by our health insurance (HCF).

Not sure what union you may be involved with but certainly wouldn't recommend this as 'the norm', in 15 years as am ambo have never had anyone suggest this as a payment option. It is simply a user pay service, easiest way to know you are covered is to take out full ambulance subscription in your state.

Buy an ambulance subscription cheap insurance, a helicopter flight from Mt Buller to Melbourne approx. $15,000 to $20,000. But if its a road accident all covered by TAC in Victoria.

Well we have a change here in SA. From the 30th May 2016 if you renew or take out a subscription with SA Ambulance your cover will cover you for nowhere but SA.
It is now recommended that you take out private health insurance or travel insurance if travelling interstate.
I'm glad i have private health but as i live only 24kms from the border life without it would become very expensive for our off the cuff drive interstate for the day taking out travel insurance for it.

Get in the ear of your local member.
They may as well close the Amb. Subs. Sch. if they're going to do that.
It won't be worth having.
How much is an RFDS flight?
How long have you been paying into this scheme and how often have you used it?
It's a hedge or insurance policy against disaster, and they're burning the hedge.
Health Insurance doesn't cover inter Hospital transfer here in Vic. Possibly the same in SA.
So that's why I joined the Vic. Scheme back in 1970.
I've ridden in an Ambulance 3 times.  Only one of those I was driving (perc of the job I had in a country town :police: )

Especially patient transport between medical facilities.
Here in Vic. Bupa and other schemes burn you by not covering this.
Also they rely on the Traffic Accident Commission to cover Accident to Hospital.
So if you call for an Ambo as result of non traffic incident it should cover for that first ride to the ER, but trips after that?

All good thanks - when we start traveling again I will be reading the fine print. They offer different levels of cover including emergency and non emergency carries within the same level.
