Most owners of the current model Jeep Grand Cherokees (2011 onwards) actually seem to report good service from their vehicles.  The same can't be said for Fiat Chrysler Australia though, it seems.  If you go to the caravan forums, where lots of people have bought them because they offer a lot, most people are very happy with them and have had little or no faults.

These are the repeated (rather than rare one-off)faults mostly with the earlier vehicles of this model, most of which have been fixed:
.  knock from rear end in non-air suspension models, came from shock absorber mounting, eventually fixed
.  auto transmission overheating and in some cases destroying the box.  FCA would repair/replace box, though wasn't always helpful in its attitude.
.  various recalls and service bulletins, carried out by dealers automatically if vehicle in for service.  People who took their cars to aftermarket places wouldn't get these - a good reason to find a good dealer and use them, not aftermarket.
.  some electrical issues on 11/12 models, mostly software or malfunctioning connectors.  Dealers usually able to fix.
.  some problems with Bluetooth and certain phones - fixed by software updates.  THis is a common issue these days with new models of cars and phones.
.  vehicle going into limp home - fixed by software update.

Apart from the gearbox issue, none of these are dramatic, and the current Jeep GC now seems to be a very dependable vehicle.  It certainly is an excellent vehicle onroad and if it has Quadralift and Off-Road Adventure Pack, great offroad.  It is amazing value too.  The owners I have spoken to in the last couple of years have all been extremely happy, particularly those who do heavy towing - up to 3500kg.

What's the actual experience of people here with the current GC?

great on road, useless off road. Loved my previous Jeeps but they lost me over the changed recovery points, sand driving issues (4wd limp mode) and the final straw was the transfer case disintegration issues. Luckily I got out even and had a good dealer experience through the challenge.

I can understand the towing fraternity loving them, however from friends and family experience and on the Caravanersforum there's stories of owners being stuck away from a capital city for weeks waiting for a part that's not even in Aus.

We have a young(ish) girl at work who "upgraded" from a Chrysler 300C to  new Jeep GC 6 months ago because she lost confidence in the Chrysler.
She did not know that Chrysler and Jeep had a pretty close relationship.
All was well until the brake pads wore out with less than 15 000km and replacement pads were $1280.
She sold the Jeep before anything else needed replacing or had mechanical or electrical problems.
In the 6 months she had a couple of occasions of limping home, one day the Jeep just would not start at all but the next day it was good with no attention, and a few times she had trouble driving straight (allegedly not alcohol related)

Then, if you watch the TV advertisement with granny and her neighbour sticking the postcards up all over the kitchen from places the Jeep broke down, you may start having concerns.

Very funny. I have close mate who bought one and happened to live over 200k from the dealer in a mining town. Had to get it towed several times and over an 18month period got sick of returning it. He asked the same dealer for a trade in at book value so he could buy another make of vehicle from them. They wouldn't trade and recommended he sell privately.....
Certainly inspires confidence.
