Didn't realise people were this bad with gluten....knew about peanuts !

Must admit I don't even know what gluten is ??

As a race, we certainly have been breeding  pi** poor specimens during the last 100 years !!   8)

Couldn't agree more mate. In nature the lions would take care of the week genetics. We have done more harm than good for our species that is for sure.

My wife is becoming more gluten intolerant the older she gets. She will have cake and things like that at a party for something special, but pays for it afterwards with arthritic type symptoms and headaches that can last for a couple of days. Just something that has developed over the last 4-5 years.
To top it off, she also has a high intolerance to corn. Take a look around the shops and try and find food that doesn't have wheat or corn in them.

I think I've always had an intolerance to corn...in fact I think my body disliked it that much, it stored it instead of digesting it....how do I know ??

In my younger days especially, even if I hadn't eaten corn for months, after a night on the grog and I needed an up and under, there would always be corn ??  ;D

Back in the 60's and 70's, I don't remember anyone being Gluten or peanut allergic or anything like that.

Not saying they weren't back then, but as Bully said, its like now its like cool dude, like you know, it just is.

In the '60s my dad didn't have celiacs, he just spewed everytime he tried to drink beer. Over his lifetime he progressively felt "sick" more often, but soldiered on because he just assumed it was normal. Always felt bloated, even though having a healthy diet, very active self employed tradesman, no drinker, non smoker.
About 15 years ago he was diagnosed with celiacs and went on a gluten free diet.
Within a couple of months he was a changed man. Fit as a fiddle. Lost about 10kg and leaned right up.
Now if he has any gluten (such as a few crumbs of normal bread mixed it with the butter from the butter tub) he will be crook as a dog within a few hours and might be layed up for a day or 2.

And the cycle continues....the pi** poor breed, creating more pi** poor people, and suddenly we have a society that's plagued by gluten, peanut, asthma etc, etc !!

Our medicine is "fixing" things that nature used to take care of !!

Are you saying that anyone who ever gets sick, should take no medicine, nor seek any medical intervention? If not, can you please advise which things we're "fixing" that we shouldn't?

Yep my youngest daughter when she was around 14 started getting crook minutes/hours after eating (always ended up over a dunny vomiting violently)... after a bit of testing and trialling and Dr's visits, we delved into the gluten free thing, this made improvements but still being crook... then tried removing dairy..... no more being sick, lost weight due to limited to mostly raw non processed foods and generally healthier and happier and has accepted now a couple of years later that this is now just the way it is..... So like plenty of others who know, shopping for both GF & DF foods is a challenge, but not impossible.
Earlier on after going GF/DF for a month or two we thought we'd test the GF theory, slipped some wheat type food into a meal (she knew it was in there, and it was her that wanted to try it, think it was crumbed steak) and guess what, about 2hrs later heaving her guts up...... poor bugger.
She's now cruising along with the whole thing though, occasionally gives me a cranky look when she see's me hooking into a fresh slice of normal bread, or a pie etc. As for sleeping at mates places, yep, she packs her food and doesn't really think much of any one else's opinion of that. :cup:

As for the people who are jumping to the "some people breeding sick specimens of kids" idea.... I can't type here what I think of that assumption  >:(...... we have 4 kids, all been raised the same, all grew up out bush with plenty of knock-a-bout kid upbringing.. plenty of time outdoors, eating whatever we cooked up.. no fuss type kids and no helicopter type parenting, the older 3 showed no issues ever and still today with foods.

I honestly believe these types of allergies have more to do with the modifications that have taken place over the years that have changed very natural foods into something it was never meant to be..... changes made to make them faster growing and yielding higher values for production purposes, I'm no expert on farming but have seen enough doco's and articles on this type of thing to conclude there has to be something in it.

Genetics mate.......I have seen 1st hand babies born , and being saved 26 weeks into gestation through the wonderful efforts of doctors, to find those babies had abnormalities.

We, as a race , are too good for our own "good"..

Medicine is great, but it's also why I said we are breeding pi** poor specimens.

OR, is it possible the modifications were over a few generations of breeding ??  Who knows and it would be hard to prove either way !!

IMO The difference nowadays is the medical profession can define allergies to a cause so they are becoming known outside of the sufferers family.   In the past allergic reactions certainly happened but not with the awareness of today. Not that long ago most people died of natural causes but that is not the case now, they know the cause.
So a thread gets started with what I consider an interesting tone followed by a few insensitive posts. To put it nicely, better chosen words that show a tad of thoughtfulness to the people on this forum who have family or friends affected by allergies would have been nice.
I have no problems with folk airing their opinions but with topics of this nature, seeming off the cuff comments by people, some who I suspect have no firsthand knowledge of the topic, should think a bit before using the keyboard.

And those kids with 'abnormalities' are still human and will still bring joy to their parents. Sounds like you've never had any hardship in your life gronk. If it was happening to you or one of your family members, I'm sure you'd be singing a very different tune. How insulting some people on here are being to those less fortunate, who I'm sure would much rather be healthy and happy if they had the choice.

If you had READ my reply......it said I have SEEN 1st hand....

If you had READ my reply......I said as a race we are breeding pi** poor people....and I could even include myself in that category....as usual, people want to get on their high horse and whinge, but the fact remains that we are curing and fixing so much stuff these days...because we can, and as humans we think we should, but to fiddle with genetics and alter what used to come naturally is a moral dilemma that gets bigger every year.

Not sure that I can agree. In the 1600's life expectancy was 35years.
1800's around 47 years.
Now it's around 75yrs?
Should we go back to the old ways of life? I'm happy not to.
We have been messing with the gene pool since man was. Nothing new in that regard.

The issue for the part of the argument about natural selection is that we don't need those same physical attribute that we once did. The biggest, strongest, fastest are all in sport which is a throwback in itself to testing for military fitness in ancient times. Technology has allowed humanity to thrive and survive without needing to be the fastest or strongest. In fact, one might suggest that innovative thinking and intelligence might be the new natural selection criteria for this world we currently live in.

What, at the expense of a strong and healthy body ??  So intelligence would be preferable to a body with abnormal limbs, asthma, allergies etc...

Same as for all other animals on earth, being the strongest, fastest etc was all about survival...nothing to do with military stuff.

Technology has allowed us to survive a lot of things that would otherwise have killed us, but it has also allowed us to save a lot of babies that naturally wouldn't have survived, and because we have the ability to do it, that won't change, but it weakens our gene pool, and will continue to do so until we come up with cures for the very things we contributed to !

You need to read up the correct definition of natural selection.

There's an interesting book called "Dangerous Grains" which maintains that grains have not been around for long enough for us all to have evolved to deal with them. Now they form the major part of the Western diet and most contain the gluten protein.
I get crook on normal fresh milk, but can tolerate A2 milk, which has a different and much older protein, just fine.

Gronk, nothing personal mate, but I think the bottom line is that your argument is at best, insensitive and inflammatory to those who have to live with these ailments every day. Of course you can think what you are saying, but probably best to keep it as just a thought.
