Gluten Free tip for the un-educated.......
« on: October 20, 2015, 11:38:38 AM »
The daughter had a friend over on Saturday, just before she arrives daughter says she is gluten free........

Not wanting to put my hospitality at risk I shoot off the the shops......got there and discovered limited info on packaging......bread was easy but snacks for sitting on the couch watching movies was tougher as it's amazing what has wheat in it.

I get home pretty satisfied that I had done pretty good only to find out............she brings her own food as it's just easier.

Tip of the day, wait til daughters friend arrives and ask.

What happens if she did eat gluten??

My niece has coeliac and diabetes. There is a large amount of gluten free produce available in Coles and Wooloworths these days. They have their own section and a freezer section as well. I agree about waiting as parents often feel it is easier, which it is, to send a child with their food. Here is a link to coeliac disease for your info.

My sister has been hospitalised at least 1/2 dozen times as she goes into anaphylactic shock from gluten.

She is super dooper careful.

She ordered a meal from a restaurant and made it very clear of her predicament.

No problem they said and when her meal she questioned the bread roll.

No worries they said, we promise it's suitable.

Minutes later she has a reaction and asks what was in the meal.

The chef and the boss close the door for a private conversation whilst my sister's life is in peril.

She had to yell through the door for them to call an ambulance.

Very frightening for her and the reason she doesn't go out to eat too often, and why she will take her own food wherever possible.

Don't get me started on Gluten. I'm with you gronk I don't even know what it is but it seems to be the cool thing these days to consider yourself gluten free. No doubt there are a lot of legitimate cases out there but if you eat bread you will feel bloated people.

Gluten intolerance is real - and reaction varies depending on personal level of intolerance (from feeling unwell after eating gluten to severe reactions). Thankfully these days the available range of gluten free products is much more advanced than what it was 10 years ago.
Most supermarkets have a health food section which usually includes gluten free items.

Had eldest blokes 18th at home a while back. During planning he said that one of his friends is vegetarian & another needs  gluten free.

Mrs got him to check with them what they could eat & prepped a couple of special items tagged vege / gluten especially.

Only to watch as both girls got into the chips, dip, cheerios, party pies etc etc etc  ???

Asked later what the story was, to be told "Ohh, a little bits OK". So why bother mentioning it in the first place?  >:(

Back in the 60's and 70's, I don't remember anyone being Gluten or peanut allergic or anything like that.

Not saying they weren't back then, but as Bully said, its like now its like cool dude, like you know, it just is.

Whilst gluten 'intolerance' is fashionable these days amongst a certain set, having a close family friend who suffers from coeliac disease I can assure you it's anything but just bloating after eating bread.

Also have a friend of one of kids who has a severe nut allergy. They just bring their own food when thy come visit. It's just easier all around. It's a blooming minefield.

The gluten thing is interesting. Studies have shown an increase in gluten intolerance over about 6/7 generations of animals. So if that holds true it could well be that we are just starting to see it occurring.

The other thing about severe allergies is that they just used to kill people early. Now with better medical care, they survive, hence more people with the allergies.

Absolutely agree there are cases out there that could kill people if they eat the wrong thing. But I haven't heard the word so much except for the last few years. Maybe it is like gym wear. Some people buy it and actually use it but most buy it and wear it to pretend they have been.

It's pretty sad that some people have to take a serious disease and diminish everyone's understanding of it by adopting it as a fashionable lifestyle choice.

Hmm. Salaries doesn't cause allergies. It's just simple genetics passing on.  Our coeliac friend is a nurse manager and her husband is an engineer and I'm sure the professional parents of our nut allergy friend wouldn't be too happy to hear you refer to their daughter that way either should we let a 7 year old girl die because she accidentally eats a peanut?  Yes it's so severe a single nut could kill her

I endured the torture of a strict(no cheating) gluten free diet for a period of 6 years in the 2000's. Happy to say been back on a regular diet for some time now. For those that don't know gluten is the protein part of the grains wheat, rye, barley, malt and somewhat oats due to manufacturing processes. Sugar parts of those grains( glucose etc) are ok. Whilst labelling and range of products has improved greatly I often find the quality lacking( still consuming some GF goods).

Conduct of the major supermarkets I find frustrating. Squeezing out specialist gluten free producers products to range their own supposedly healthy items. Often own brand products are similar to sugar filled biscuits/ cakes/ snacks found in regular supermarket isles just gluten absent.

Those choosing a GF as a lifestyle choice need to be careful as some replacements for gluten are quite high in carbs similar to wheat. Other wheat grains such as spelt might be a healthier alternative as well as following a well balanced diet.

We spend extra $ and time to ensure we eat a better quality of food from all food groups.

Sorry rant over.

As much as we talk about it being fashionable or a fad, I'm convinced it will eventually take my sister from us. A very sobering thought.

Re the 18 year olds eating gluten at a party.

Had a friends newly diagnosed son do exactly that. Apparently some teenagers think being sick for days is a fair cost for appearing 'part of the crowd'. ???

My sister is celiac , as was one of past bosses - fun at conferences after a few drinks.

Turns out is not a career limiting move to take food out of your Gluten Intoerant bosses hand.

More fun was when the daughter started to get sick when on fraser island.
Worst one was at Kingfisher bay, had just made hamburgers on bread wraps, then she runs off towards the cafe, thankfully they had toilets & paper...

Finding things for her to eat was a bit more fun.
He'd her checked out by the doc when we got back, still has to be careful and not eat to much, but we don't call her gluten intolerant.

Nothing worst than the bearded hipster tosses and their fashionable partners who call for gluten free then eat the bread & drink the wheat beer

Worse still you go to those crap hipster caffes to get lunch and theres not one diabetic friendly drink in the place except possibly nasty coke zero or 6 dollars a bottle water.
Having an alergy or aversion to food when you never did before is a real eye opener to how little there is on offer when you step out your door
