I wonder if a sink hole comes under the umbrella of "an act of God", and if such acts are still not covered by insurers?

If your caravan or camper went down in this ‘sink hole’ you would hope you have good insurance. But reading the policy of CIL insurance it states they will not cover for, ‘loss of or damage to your caravan or your annexe caused by actions or movements of the sea (including storm surge) or tidal wave.’  Interesting???   Kevin

If you look at the aerial shots and the colour of the water, that sinkhole looks pretty friggin deep.

The light blue turns to dark blue all along the beach, but the new bit is the same colour  as the rest of the channel.
Looks like a nice place to park the boat, as long as I don't snag a 19 foot Viscount with the anchor.

Should be some good fishing around the new Viscount reef :)
Glad to hear no one was seriously injured or killed. Could have been a lot worse.

Apparently recently sold up and started to travel.

I suspect there will be a battle to get their insurance company to pony up the dough.

While this particular sinkhole is the biggest I’ve seen it, it’s been coming and going for the last 35+ years that I know of.  Before the sealed road went in and Inskip Point became popular we use to go fishing and camping at Inskip 4 or 5 times per year and it wasn’t unusual for the beach to be drivable one trip and next trip the beach wasn’t drivable and fishing in the hole.

As for the insurance companies guarantee the pay up quick because it’s only a handful of claims which inturn makes a good PR story.

But guarantee that particular camping ground will now be closed for life.

Will be interesting to see how the insurers 'roll' on this.
Storm surges and tidal waves are, to some extent, avoidable by choosing to depart during the lead up to such extreme weather events.
By contrast, not only was the so-called 'sink hole' not evident in advance, but not self evidently an action or movement of the "sea".  I listened to a marine engineering expert on the ABC this morning who explained that the cause of such events is likely related to the degree of saturatiuon of the sand and that, perhaps it could have been a different type of event, such as a land 'slump'.
If these are arguablew, for the limited claims involved, CIL and which ever other insureres are involved would get relatively cheap PR if they paid out.  Hundreds of vehicles washed away in a tidal wave would be a completely different storey!

Maybe I'm cynical, but any excuse NOT to pay  seems to over ride any idea of a good PR story.

Sounds like the couple would be completely stuffed without a payout, so I hope they get a good outcome.

We went and had a look yesterday afternoon.
Jayco make a good caravan, but a crappy boat.

Its a pretty hunk of sand that went missing, but as said by others, I seem to remember this spot being pretty thin several times over the years.

The jayco has feel to bits I think, as the fridge is floating about 10 feet from the van and on the outside. I'm sure jayco put their fridges inside

The main thing is no one was in the vans when they started to sink and no one was injured.  Like many others we have friends of friends who were there etc etc and have heard numerous stories from how, what, when it happened.

However for my 2 c worth, why the insurance bashing?  It's not the intent of the policy wording to exclude a sinkhole? The intent is to exclude claims from high tides and storm surges.  As B&B said these are often avoidable.

We are all assuming they are insured with CIL?   The fact the owners aren't on TV asking for handouts means they are most likely insured with a reputable company and there are no dramas.

And yes I am a broker in the insurance industry and it just frustrates me the comments made whenever there is any event.  18 years in the industry and yet to see a legitimate claim denied.

Well you're the man to get info from !!

Enlighten us......isn't there wording in most ( all ) policies excluding acts of god ? If it's a no brainer that they will be paid out, then that's great and we needn't be talking about it .

Did you hear about the Youi car insurance debacle on Ray Hadleys radio show ?  what were your thoughts on that ??

Hi Gronk,

Not sure where these insurance policies are you are referring to regarding "acts of god".  If you can find one send me a copy.

http://www.insurancecouncil.com.au/assets/files/urban%20myths.pdf

Never said it was a no brainer however yes it is unique.

No I haven't listened to Ray Hadley's radio show however I do know of the case in question.  Perhaps you would like to start a new thread on Youi and we can all discuss.  Beware though the same issue will arise as with the foreign camper trailers.  Just a name increase from 3 letters to 4.

Cheers

"The camp site at the sink hole remains closed!"
Really?

Yes it is.

We arrived on Sunday morning,  set up about 50m from the bunting the rangers had placed up around the area. We were probably 100m from the sink hole. Set up camp, cracked first beer, then the Rangers came through and made evryone move camp as the were closing the camp ground. It wasn't them who authorized it, but higher up. Has nothing to do with the sinkhole as such, but to aid in the recovery/clean up job.
The whole of Beagle camp ground and a bit of Sarawak are closed.

BUT, if you listen to the media, the entire world is about to dissapear into Rainbow Beach.

Camper trailer has been recovered but apparently the 4wd connected to the caravan has gone missing.
