not sure whether you know, but no free upgrade from windows xp...

The upgrade is for my desktop which has Win7.
My old laptop runs on XP which will stay on XP for the mini-VCI with Techstream.
I did a factory reset yesterday  and now have to get it connected to internet.
No luck so far.

I will declare an interest, but suffice to say - it's the best Windows ever and you can upgrade for free. Why wouldn't you?

the way microsoft are talking, there might not be a service pack.

it seems that it will a continuous stream of updates, not just one big hit of bug fixes and updates...

^^^^^ Good vids. Will have to watch all before upgrade.
How is W10 likely to work with multiple monitors  i have 3 screens on my main machine?

Sent from my SM-G900I using Tapatalk

very well by all accounts

"And it's good to finally see Windows adopting a sensible approach to scaling for multi-monitor setups. Windows 10 lets you set display scaling on a per-screen basis – so you can hook up your compact laptop to a 4K desktop screen, drag windows back and forth between the two, and get the best image quality from both. Sadly, this doesn't mean scaling problems will vanish entirely – that requires software developers to ensure their applications scale properly - but it's a step in the right direction."

as previously described, microsoft have a tool that allows for the uninstall of an update causing issues:

http://www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=44347.msg744225#msg744225

but, in my experience, it is very rare for an update to causing dramas for home users...

bit of a 'damned if you do, damned if you don't' situation.  misinformed people still continue to hammer microsoft for it's 'unsecure' desktop operating systems (vista sp1 onwards), when in actual fact, if you are up to date with updates (security updates in particular), you will be as secure as reasonably possible.

and if you want a higher level of security again, then have a crack at installing and living with unix/linux... :)

in the end, if you think any operating system is 100% secure, then i have a three-legged racehorse i would like to sell you... :)

Tried to update to win10 and it seemed to have updated, but then came up with  "system exception thread not handled " error,  then does some thinking (a lot of thinking ) then shows it again, then comes up with recovery....restart PC (which comes up with same as above ) or advanced repair options.......3 options...exit and continue to win 10 (same as above ) ....turn off your PC  ( same as above on restarting ) ...troubleshoot.....reset this PC ( nope, it removes apps and settings )  or advanced options... which one option is go back to previous build ( but I don't know the windows password, so it won,t let me in )

Wish I didn't touch it now, but seems like I'm screwed....got my resume, photos etc , but not sure what I can do from here ???

Nope, is that what you're supposed to do ??     I just pressed on update !!     It doesn't mention anything about doing that before you update ??

Does that mean the laptop is screwed ?  Can it be saved somehow ?

yes.
if worst comes to worse, you take the drive out of it, sit it in an external drive caddy, and plug that into another running PC - and you access it like another drive - usually E: drive.. copy everything you need, and go from there...

Shite! Just typed a long reply and lost it...
As Bird says, get someone to take the drive out, hook it up to another pc and copy off your docs.
Then download the offline Windows 10 installer and try a clean install.
If that fails then use the recovery partition to reload your original windows.
Cheers, John.

Sounds like your profile is hosed.
One of the boot options is usually to boot into the recovery partition, but it depends on the make and age of your laptop, and also sometimes people delete the partition to free up more space. As stated, best to get it to someone who knows what they'rs doing before you do more damage. Not being facetious, but your're at a point where you need to hand it over if you don't have the skills yourself.
Cheers, John.

BTW folks, there's reports of a Crytolocker infection masquarading as a Windows 10 upgrade email notification. It has a zip file attached which purports to be a windowx 10 installer, but is in fact a version of cryptolocker.

Once again, NEVER, NEVER, NEVER click on a zip file that you don 't know where it came from. Same goes with links in emails.
Cheers, John.

Your call.. If you go down that path then anything on the drive is toast. If you want to keep your data, don't do it.
