Although I agree in principle that in some respects more could be done / or services could be better managed to help the unfortunate in this country. It really gets under my skin when I hear people wholly blame the "government" or other groups for their personal situations and predicament.
There's plenty of people out there that simply choose not to participate and contribute to our society in a positive way, even though they have the ability or have been given the opportunity. They'd rather complain about their situation and imply they are the "victim" of the system, than actually do anything constructive about turning around their lives.
I talk with a little bit of experience. One side of my extended family have spent their lives being unemployed, living in govt provided housing and living off govt assistance. We are now seeing the 3rd generation of this family following the exact same path. No amount of help or persuasion seems to change their destiny. My wife also works in an organisation that provides support, accommodation and housing to people re-entering the community after being in jail. A good portion of these people almost immediately re-offend, skip bail, hit the drugs or abuse the tax payer funded accommodation provided to them. They're given support, assistance, money and housing - all that's expected of them is to make an effort and want to change, yet they make the choice to fall back to old habits and ways.
There's genuine people who are sick and with mental health issues that need more govt support than is currently provided. It's separating out the ones that are in genuine need, from the ones who aren't, is the really challenging part.
