Struggle Street - SBS
« on: May 06, 2015, 09:47:34 PM »
Struggle street on SBS tonight.

It has copped a fair bit of criticism this week for being unfair on the People of Mt Druit.

I've never been there, but it is like I expected.

Thanks to all major networks inc the ABC and the Mayor of Bankstown for advertising the show so well this week.

Without all the media hype about how inaccurate the show is, I would never have known it was on.

I am loving it though... It's just like Housos, but they are not acting!

Yeah... Haha... That bloke was funny.

I can't see what all the issues are about.

They followed a family that are doing it tough, using drugs, in court, jail, stealing sh!t, general ferals etc.

If these people didn't try to have the show stopped, most of the viewers tonight wouldn't have even known it was on, and hardly anyone would have watched it.

We chose not to watch it, it's not like "Real Housewifes of somewhere..."

Loved what Blacktown Council did with the garbage trucks though.

Lol.
I'll share a couple of yarns with you...
I'm in the driveway of this house, I'd just pulled up and I see this Hi ace van with the doors ajar causing down the street.
Then it floors it up on the lawn beside me and all these coppers in riot gear jump out and smash the doors and windows in and start dragging all these bros out.
I was sitting in my van minding my own business eating a pie and all he'll broke loose.
I said to this cop "hey mate do you mind moving so I can get out, not much point fixing the door lock now is there"
He just about Shit himself he hadn't even seen me sitting there amongst all the broken cars and commotion...true story.

Went to another place and a cop car turns up to arrest this huge bastard and they knock on the door and he opens it and just punches this cop in the face and sends him flying, he then proceeds to belt the other two around the front lawn.then about 3 more cop cars turn up and this one blokes taking them all on.
They pepper spray him and whack him and he's swatting them like Flys. They eventually get him cuffed and into a car.i was building a wheelchair ramp about 6 meters away lol

Taking pleasure from the unfortunate situation of others is something I would have thought Un-Australian.

You are correct that taking pleasure from the unfortunate situation of others is Un-Australian, but the people we are talking about can change their situation and improve their life.

On the radio during the week with all the hype about this show they interviewed Eddie McGuire and apparently he grew up in bad neighbour, but he knew if he did well at school he could break the cycle and do something better.

Also we have the Young Australian from a couple from a years ago. She was an aboriginal girl who I believe came from Cape York and when interviewed about the crime, alcohol and standard of living in her own town she was very critical of her own people for not getting off their butts and taking the first steps on improving their lives instead on living on handouts.

hi all. from my life experience there are people all over Australia and the world for that matter.some that are down on there luck or cant cope with life and life gets to much for them
the problem starts when govt etc stick a lot of people in one spot with no amenities etc etc
I remember green valley and all the nick names it got
yet I worked with blokes gfrom there in building game they were hard workers and just trying to make a life for the family the same as me and many others

I agree the major is a joke the program got the best advertisement of all free
he is a carbon copy of our Wyong major

Yea i worked in south auckland , pretty rough joint
And I agree with previous remarks..some people are down on thier luck and poverty is no joke but when you get 3 or 4 generations in one house that have never worked or dickhead that tattoo thier faces and necks and Shit complain they are poor I've got no sympathy at all.
That old bloke on the program with the dead Shit son wasn't a bad bloke he'd just fell on hard times but he didn't have a dickhead attitude either.
And generaly speaking the government don't force them all into one area it's where they grew up, where thier family and friends are an where they want to be.
It's also economicly how cities work, the less you can aford in rent the further out you live so you get poverty belts because of it.
From my experience in nearly a decade and a half in 2 countries dealing with these areas and the people in them at least half could in a matter of weeks turn thier situations around if they had the gumption too

Although I agree in principle that in some respects more could be done / or services could be better managed to help the unfortunate in this country.  It really gets under my skin when I hear people wholly blame the "government" or other groups for their personal situations and predicament.

There's plenty of people out there that simply choose not to participate and contribute to our society in a positive way, even though they have the ability or have been given the opportunity.  They'd rather complain about their situation and imply they are the "victim" of the system, than actually do anything constructive about turning around their lives.

I talk with a little bit of experience.  One side of my extended family have spent their lives being unemployed, living in govt provided housing and living off govt assistance.  We are now seeing the 3rd generation of this family following the exact same path. No amount of help or persuasion seems to change their destiny.  My wife also works in an organisation that provides support, accommodation and housing to people re-entering the community after being in jail.  A good portion of these people almost immediately re-offend, skip bail, hit the drugs or abuse the tax payer funded accommodation provided to them.  They're given support, assistance, money and housing - all that's expected of them is to make an effort and want to change, yet they make the choice to fall back to old habits and ways.

There's genuine people who are sick and with mental health issues that need more govt support than is currently provided.  It's separating out the ones that are in genuine need, from the ones who aren't, is the really challenging part.

I watched the show and found it interesting.

I think you could get rid of the Mt Druit tag and most people would recognize it as an area near them. This kind of thing happens everywhere in Australia. It is a vicious cycle in families and if you see mum and dad don't work then why would I.

Plus if you don't know what it is like to have a nice holiday or car etc, how would you know what you are missing.

One thing that does really get me mad is when people on the dole refer to it as "me pay". It is not pay you have to work to get paid, if it is anyone's "pay" it is my "pay" or anybody else that pays taxes "pay".

I had a maori mate when I was in my early 20 he would have been in his late 50 or so at the time.
Great bloke and could fix anything with a coat hanger or duct tape but he had about 12 cars on his lawn and as far as he was concerned a legitimate reason for them being there.
He'd casual say how good the Bedford van went but needed the front brakes done like he'd parked it there yesterday but it had been there 15 years.
The whole street were petitioning the council to get him to get rid of them all but he wouldn't budge.clasic old bloke but a Shit hoarder from hell

I get what you are saying and I agree in principal however as someone who grew up in Western Sydney (Parramatta, Baulkham Hills, Northmead) and went to Tafe in Mt Druitt for 3 years the first year full time its not about the "unfortunate situation" its about those that are unapologetical oxygen theiving, stealing my tax dollars, downright waste of space deadsh!ts and it just happens that there IS a huge concentration of THOSE type of people in Mt Druitt. Sad and sorry for those that live in Mt Druitt that are not like that (i have at least 5 good friends from the area that broke free of the stereotype) but the Air Bandits could just spontaneously combust and wouldnt be missed by anyone..

Lol, I went to my druitt take for 3 years, in the mid 90's. Was always an experience having lunch over at the shopping centre, and walking through the park to get there. Especially every Thursday fortnight as the dole office was just near there also. Lol

I watched the show last night on the link provided above, it wasn't to bad a watch i thought, hardly worthy of the media beat up it copped before it went to air.
