   Hobart has just got a cool southerly, down to 22 deg, but it is laden with heavy smoke from fires in the SW unfortunately.

I've lived in Brisbane for 47 years, big storms are the norm here and far from abnormal....and it really depends where you live as to how many you get and how bad the storms are. I've lived in roughly the same area most of my life, I can recall 3 big destructive storm events in all that time that have hit here, most storms spilt as they come from our West and hit the area South of Brown's Plains (far Southside of town) or up on the Northern side of town/ Caboolture way to the Sunny Coast or West of Brisbane past Ipswich and out through the Lockyer Vally area to further North past Gympie region ....rarely does the inner Brisbane city suburbs get hit with big destructive storms. SEQ runs from the NSW border / Gold Coast to about Gympie and out to Toowoomba, that's a massive region  with plenty of population (over 3/4 of Queenslands population live in SEQ) so you always hear of every storm now that hits somewhere. I call the area South of Brown's Plains to Beaudesert and into the Gold Coast hinterland as storm ally, they get some cracking storms there, certain areas see a lot more storms aswell as destructive storms then others due to topography of the land, it's always been that way here since I was a kid.

Also a NQ boy born and bred and I completely agree with that.

Our family house is right on the beach up there, fully exposed to everything coming off the ocean.
In the 30 odd years I was up there I’d been through every cyclone that passed by (and over) our place.
Nothing from a cyclone came close the ferocity of the hail storm that hit us while staying at Currumbin in 2005. That thing was scary as hell.

When I built my house here on the Sunshine Coast I made the engineer design it to meet cyclone rating.
He reckons it was overkill, but I’m comfortable with my decision. For the little bit of extra construction cost, the peace of mind knowing we’re as safe as we can be is worth it.

And I don’t know how anyone could possibly live up north with all of that predictable humidity and rain.
It would be much better living where the temperature could drop by 15 degrees in minutes and over 20 degrees in a couple of hours, that place sounds like heaven...

My insurance premiums tell a very different story. Insurance on my Townsville house is around double the insurance on my house here in Brisbane.

Some good old sensationalism in the news "In the past week, the world has experienced chaotic weather phenomena, from deathly Indian heatwaves to snow inundating parts of Queensland. Now, the Breakthrough National Centre for Climate Change has issued a report predicting the end of human civilisation as we know it."

Granted, it has been a bit chilly in SEQ today and there was a bit of snow out Stanthorpe way, but an inundation it wasn't!

So today must be the day for winter in Qld this year. Was -2 when I left for work this morning. Had to water the ice off the windscreen.

I did notice on the observations the outer suburbs of Melbourne went from 8.1 degrees to 32.7 degrees in just a few hours this morning....
