Moving, what a right pain in the preverbial
« on: June 16, 2014, 09:07:07 AM »
Well as some of you know, we have just bought a house out in the country.

We have been renting this place for 22 years, could have paid for it by now  >:( But have never been in a position to do it until now.

So we have horded 22 years of crap, it's amazing at just how much junk you keep, thinking, I might use that one day  ;D

Because we are paying cash for the house, settlement is only 2 weeks and is due this coming Friday and we will be moving on Saturday. So it hasn't really left us much time, I know we could have stretched it out and I wish I had of, but the wife is chaffing at the bit and let's face it, we have to do as ordered right?

At least I have the most important part all packed and ready to go, the shed  ;D

It will take me about two weeks to get this place into shape, have to wash all walls, paint the bathroom ceiling and our bedroom, shampoo all carpets, prune a few trees, wash all cupboards clean all windows etc.

At least I can take my time with that, a few friends reckon I am mad for doing all that for our landlord. It means I will have to travel 600 k's a day, but he has been terrific and has looked after us for 22 years so I feel it's the least I can do to show my appreciation.
Anyway, it will get me out of the new house while the wife sorts out where she wants everything.

I will just be glad when it's all done and dusted and I can start to set up my new bigger shed, I already have some new goodies that will be going into it  ;D

Congrats on the new direction. In a few weeks it would have all been worth it.

Best of luck with your move.

We move this coming Friday into our house, but luckily we moved 12 months ago so did the big clean out then.

Packed the majority of the house on Sunday ready for next Friday.

Gees I wish we could pack that fast, I think the worst part is getting everything changed over and connected, along with changing address for everything.

At least I have the main things done already including insurance for the house along with moving insurance.

I bought a new racking system for the new shed and am looking forward to putting it up. It means I will finally have a place for everything with out having to hunt for it.

The system is that cladding you attach to the wall and has channels that hooks etc slide into. I bought a bucket load of it, as he had it as an old order and wanted to get rid of it, so I got it at a very good price.

Remember we did the whole 15 years of accumulated junk clean out 12 months ago so much much easier for us :D

Sounds like a great pickup with the shed system. Just remember  :worthles:

Are you planning much work to the new place in terms of painting etc... or just moving in and seeing how it goes?

As one who has moved may times for work and other reasons here are my golden rules

1. If you cant remember when you used it last in the bin it goes
2. If you cant rember what it comes off in the bin it goes
3. If the missus replies with "Maybe" for any questions to a producst use in the bin it goes
4. If moving into your first place be especially cut throat cuase the missus will want to redo the place anyway. If she says she is OK with the old stuff for a while she is either lying or the greatest partner a man could have
5. No matter how backwards place everything in a box and i mean everything 1 box with 5 items in it = 1 trip as opposed to 5 loose items which = 5 trips

just some food for thought, I helped a friend move a the weekend, arrived Sat morning to find all the big stuff there, all small stuff already moved in many, many hatch back loads the previous evening. I would have been some much easier for me to load big things in to trailer and wagon, then pack small stuff around them, as it was I used all my rope and  still had things rattling around.
great advice on boxes. better if you beg/borrow/steal packing boxes, all square and with lids, easier to load on trolley and pack in truck, trailer or what ever, then when you finish collapse them.

We moved about 18 months ago after 20 years in the last house and I have vowed my next move will be in a pine box. Moving a family of 4 would have to be one of the worst experiences of my life especially considering I admit I’m a bit of a hoarder.

I admit I moved items I haven’t used for years, but making shelves or small changes to the new house quite a few of these bits and pieces came in very handy.

Anyway we use to live in a high set house and 1 week before the move, both cars got parked in the driveway and each time we went downstairs we bought an item with us. After the week the garage was full and 95% of our items were ready for the truck.

Seeing I was paying the removalists by the hour, this made it fast a cheap packing the truck. Also all items were marked (Including beds/mattress/TV etc) where to go at the new house and I also put up signs in each room in the new house to match the names on the boxes.

We are in the process of moving too. Two trailer loads so far to the tip and salvos. (6x4 with 800mm cage)

I hate moving!

I have moved a few times in my life so far and every time before i move i do this;

1. sort out what you want to keep
2. Have a garage sale before you move (the stuff you don't want to take with you)
3. Any **** left over dump or give away.
4. Less stuff to move

I think I was extremely lucky with my removalists as they were fantastic. Showed up at the correct time and seeing they had another 4 jobs after mine, they ran to and from the truck to get my job done as fast as possible.  They were also happy with myself and my mates helping and told us to only lift light items as they were trained on how to safely carry heavy items. (Didn’t have to ask twice with that request)

Get a big big skip fill it up before you start to pack, waste of money sending it back not full then only have to move what you really want. Have moved 4 times in last 8 years works for me

Who was this random company?

One of my work colleagues asked me the same question earlier this year when they were about to move and I couldn’t find the business cards they gave me. Shame because I wouldn’t have had a problem recommending these guys.

Well we are slowly getting there, I have done 3 trips to the tip with the trailer chock a block and still need another two trips.

I thought the packing was bad enough, but it looks like the next two weeks will be even worse.
We will have the unpacking to do at the new house along with moving the furniture around until the wife is happy with everything and then I have to tidy up the old house.
The bathroom ceiling needs sanding back, sealing and painting along with the master bedroom, all walls doors etc have to be washed. Some small painting touch ups around the place. All carpets have to be shampooed and the dining/family room floor has to be stripped, sealed and polished.

So we will be doing 600 k round trips each day to try and get it all done.

Chester, you are right, the wife says chuck everything I want all new stuff, when I asked how she was going to pay for it I got the look of death. She just came back with "you got your shed Shit, I get what I want" Can't really argue with that I guess.

New curtains, new lounge suite, wardrobes, tall boys, 2 queen beds and a single, then she wants to get new stuff for the kitchen. So much fro trying to save a few bucks.

Buntip, thanks for the links, they will com in handy, there is so much to try and remember. I have done the phone, elect and internet so far.

Our settlement agent phoned to today to inform me that settlement will be 12:30 Friday, so at least there is no more wondering.

It looks like rain on Saturday so I decided to buy some of that plastic film so I can wrap the lounge suites and anything else we don't want to get wet.

Ha ha yep, you find all sorts of Shit. Then comes the problem of either keeping it or chucking it.

I am up to 4 loads of crap to the tip and have one more to go. I have decided to take control of what goes and what stays. The wife is at work all day so I get to chuck want I want and by the time she gets home, it's too late :)

Just have the kitchen pots and pans etc to go now and a few little things around the place.
I didn't think we would get it all done, but it has turned out ok.

One thing that has pissed me off big time, is the internet connection.

I made a point of contacting IINet to confirm we were connected to a broadband exchnge, BEFORE we put in the offer.
They assured me it was all good and that I would have ADSL2. After the offer was accepted, I contacted them to get the ball rolling for the change over. Everything was going ok and then I get a call yesterday to say that the exchange is NOT a broadband exchange.

So I don't know what to do, we definitely what/need the internet and I am amazed that a town 250k from Perth doesn't have it.

Well settlement went through yesterday, so it's officially ours  ;D

Now we just have to move in and unpack, something I am not looking forward to, although it should be a lot easier the packing.

Good luck with that :D

Unpack everything then move it all around until SWMBO is happy. End up moving several times after you have moved in!
