El Cheapo Reverse cam setup
« on: May 04, 2014, 05:14:07 PM »
I bought this a while ago from Autobarn
Not a really big screen but thought it will be ideal for being able to see the trailer while we're loaded in the back and for manoeuvring at camp (while loaded in the back)

I did have one of those units that clips on the sunvisor but it's way too bulky  up there so it's on the shelf for now.

Mounted the camera up high under the high mount stop light, so it's inside out of the muck and dust, and not hooked up to the reverse light, I have a switch to turn on and off
This unit can take 2 feeds so plan to later on have the 2nd cam on the back of the trailer but it'll have to be separately switchable. for some reason the device has no switches of it's own (could explain why it's cheap!)

for now it's stuck to a bit of Perspex that's got Velcro hooks on the dashmat.
Plan to make a dash top pod that's got a curve in it same as the Prado 90 instrument pod and have the screen in the middle and some gauges etc each side.  I'll make it out of ply and balsa then have it covered in some vinyl that's a match for my dash.
here's some pics.

Yeah got one very much like that from Super Cheap.  Not bad for the price.

But I ripped the wires out of the little camera a day after I installed it. Doh!!!  Waiting on a replacement camera from China.  Paid $10.60 delivered.

I have the supercheap one for $58 and have superglued the camera under the rear visor at the back of the cruiser and have wired it up with a switch so I can turn it on and off when I need it.

The picture on the screen looks great. Very happy with it.

I am still shocked my wiring works.  ;D

I bought one thinking I could use it to see over the top of the Hawk and the road behind.   I mounted it on the roof rack and later experimented with a stick to raise it another 40cm or so.   Either way, these cameras have such a wide angle of view that anything in the distance is way too small.   Great for seeing immediately behind the car when reversing but no much use trying to see if there is a car behind the van when travelling.

Think the camera has a 170 deg view.  Maybe try one with a smaller angle.  Think you can get 120 and 130 degrees.  For $10 or $12 it's not much to try and could be your answer.
