Is anyone into Catching INDIAN MYNA Birds? - Success!

Hi Swaggers
I guess many of you have these pests near by, and have wanted them gone. Is anyone taking part in catching them?
How is your suscess rate?
Did you make the Pee Gee type cage?

I am about to build my cage and take part, as I don't want these horrible things taking over the many native birds I get here.

I forgot to add that the transport cage the lady mentions in the 2nd video is not in the drawings above, but I figure that you will figure out how to make it if you can make the 2 part cage in the drawing.
When I am done, I shall put some pics here, my 8 year old an I are doing it together......

We have heaps that I'd like gone, that and the crows seemed to have moved in recently. What do you do with them once you have trapped them? Does throwing them into a hessian sack and in the dam still work

I a, really in to killing Myna's. I always swerve to hit them when there on the side of the road. So far I have killed 0, none, nada; they are too clever and fly out of the way at the very last second.

Not sure if it's still current advice, but in at least some States you could legally euthanise them by dropping the trap/cage into a wheely bin and running a pipe from you vehicle exhaust into the bin to gas them.  Cold petrol engine gives best results.

They do say to be humane about it as the links which Beatle gave.

What a time consuming task that is to follow the written instructions and build the twin cage as per the link I gave above. There is room for improvement in the way the instructions are written, so take your time with them.
If your thinking of building one your self, I recon, look for an old bird cage at a garage sale and modify it it, saves a few $ and a lot of time. The main thing to achieve is the method of encouraging the birds into the cage, and then to be trapped and want to go up high into the 2nd holding section. If the funnel, and valve arrangement is made so that they can't go back, it will be good.

The bait game has started, then this week when kids are at school, I shall try the cage out.

I started eradicating them about two years ago from around my house. The neighbors have been commenting over spring/summer this year how many more native birds they have been seeing around our street.  So it's working. 
Go as hard as you can Dave, I say.

I found a rat trap works well, saved on the sack

When we were in Sydney could easily get 5 a day. Makes a big difference over time and a lot more natives can have a chance to bread. Rats of the sky.....

I think it was a Bryce Courtenay novel that had the main character go out every morning in Sydney and feed then rat pellets wrapped in small peices of bread.
As far as humane deaths, the car exhaust into a container works. As said in a previous section an recently started car works best. I had the need to put down some Guinea Pigs years ago and ran a hose from the exhaust into a large vase. It did the job but the smell of the cooked animals gave it mixed feelings.

Some of us don't have the time to sit around on the porch all day drinkin' moonshine popping off little birds with a BB gun    .  Traps are good because they keep working when you aren't there, and once you catch one the others come down to help so the trap rate goes up pretty quickly.

Be careful using poison baits if you or your neighbours have pets that might ingest the baited birds.......

Our local noisy miners and butcher birds seem to be doing the job on flying rats but I saw some bloody starlings up the street for the first time.

I agree with you in the poison.  I don't use it for that very fact plus we have a family of possums living in the bush behind and owls and a whole heap of other natives. So I won't take the risk.

I built one of those traps about 5 years ago. Bring it out every now and then and by best day was 21 in the trap.

I've got about a dozen bird boxes around the yard and they get used by Rosellas and lorakeets mostly, but also get sugar gliders and possums in them.

Everey year they get over run by Minor birds in the breeding season. I used to get up the ladder and clean out their nest as soon as I saw them using a box, but the bastards would just make a new nest in the same box.

I've found it much better now to leave them build their nest, lay their eggs and wait for them to hatch.

By the time their eggs have hatched, their breeding season is over. By disposing of the chicks in the nest, the breeding cycle is broken for that year.

I've definately noticed their numbers have declined over the years (at neast in my neighbourhood), but they will never be gone.

We're lucky here I guess, the 1st pair any of us have seen, including the old boys over the road, have moved in area in the last 6 months.
I'll be out to get them both.
The bait on the lawn worked yesterday, so the trap will be out today I hope.

I haven't read the links or looked at the videos but is there a chance of trapping other breeds of bird. I understand you can just let them go if you did but can you also get multiple breeds trapped at the same time.

True, the only other native bird I am concerned about trapping is a Butcher Bird, as we have them out side singing along regularly.
We have a way of keeping an eye on things.

Generally not.

The Minor birds are a scavange feeder and by using bait such as dry cat / dog food, the natives won't go in the trap. The only thing I've ever got other than Minor's was 1 pidgeon (but I've cought over 100 Minors over the years).

Just a tip if trapping, Minors are a bloody smart bird. They will usually have a look-out bird while the others are feeding. Only set the trap in the dark, and don't go near it during the day. If they see a person near the trap at all, they won't go near it. Do 2 or 3 days of free feeding to build their confidance, then a day of trapping, and repeat as necessary.

Also, they are a comunal bird and will generally have a commen roost tree that they all go back to at night. If you can find that tree and trap near there you will have better success

I bought a commercial trap which was based on a bait and a spring flap. The theory was that you trap one bird and a whole lot of its mates fly down looking for company and enter the trap through a conical opening at the top, from which they can't escape.
According to the theory, you very soon have a cage full of Indian Mynahs.
Well I set the trap and caught one bird, which promptly died of fright. Then it's mate came in through the conical hole, took one look and left through said excape-proof conical hole.
I disposed of the dead bird and put the trap out for the council cleanup.
