I did think if I could get them to stand still long enough in the grass to run over then I wouldn't need a cage in the first place.

A diesel exhaust will still work.  If it doesn't actually poison the birds, it'll still replace the oxygen so they'll suffocate.  They might choke on the soot first though ;D

This method won't work if the birds have undergone Confined Space training.
