People aren’t getting the sun safe message
« on: January 13, 2014, 11:19:06 AM »
Howdee,

Yesterday I took the Family to one of the Water Slide parks near the Gold Coast and we are fairly pedantic with our kids then it comes to wearing sun shirts and regularly applying sunburn cream. My Father was a tradie and as he got older we witnessed the damage of what years working in the sun does to your skin.

Teenagers and adults are old enough to make their own minds up when it comes to sun safety, but it amazes me the number of young children running around without sun shirts and judging by their glow in the afternoon, they also didn’t have any sunburn cream on. I saw I kid about 8 who was peeling from a previous burn, but was glowing red from being burnt again.

Apart from the sun protection factor, there were just as many Males as Females who just don’t have the body to be wearing no shirts or skimpy bikinis. I understand I don’t have a athlete’s body, so my shirt rarely comes as don’t want the beached whale squad from Greenpeace trying to recuse me.  In saying that there were also some people who provided visual delight to everyone showing off there finely tuned bodies and these people made lining up for 45 minutes more enjoyable!!

Also yesterday I learnt there is a swimsuit market for the Muslim Females and I saw quite a few head to fingers to toes outfits being warn.  All these suites were black, so that has to be hot when lining up for a ride in the Qld Summer.

Agreed, I see it all the time up here on the Sunny Coast beaches. Our kids are always in swimming shirts that cover their shoulders, and plenty of sunblock, I wear a rashy too - to set an example, and to cover up the body beautiful, don't like too much attention ;)

We love Wet & Wild but I've learned to avoid it when its going to be crowded - the 45 minute waits get old very quickly on a hot day.

the misses took the kids to Wet and Wild just before Xmas, she did all the sun smart stuff yet came home with blisters under the bottom of her feet, caused by how hot the concrete was they were standing on whilst lining up for one of the rides...sometimes you just can't win...lol

Fine for girls.................i will never wear a pair but they will come out in guys sizes soon too........probably just like wearing a thin wetsuit.

Remember PABA, I reckon more studies will come out on the chemicals in sunscreen, and so I am not a faithful user.

I live and work in the sun and get checked annually and have only ever had one mole cut out. But I am sensible about the sun and wear a wet shirt when I go to the beach and a hat if I am not in the water. Unless your very fair if you live by the beach in a sunny environment your skin will adapt to the environment.

Go before 10.00am and after 2.00pm.

Unless your very fair if you live by the beach in a sunny environment your skin will adapt to the environment.

I’m only 45 and as a kid my parents like most people at the time thought getting lots of sun was good for them. So we use to use reef oil (Olive oil with a reef scent) and often got very badly burnt and peeling was normal.

About 5 years ago I started yearly skin checks without any problems, but 18 months ago my freckles started changing and I’m now in 6 monthly checking. The Dr said there will be a time in the near future when he will have to start cutting into my body.

As I mentioned in my original post my Father was a Bricklayer and spent his whole life in the sun. Back then sun cream wasn’t dreamed about being used on building sites. Like expected he had a singlet tan and his skin did adapt, it adapted to a leather like feel, so while he got lots of sun, it appeared he rarely got burnt. He never had a problem until about age 55 onwards and think in total he had 3 melanoma removed, melanoma in the back of his eye and if I said another 25 lesions cut out and 200+ spots burnt off I wouldn’t be exaggerating.

It wasn’t uncommon to return home from the hospital with 20 lesions burnt off at one time.  Also seeing his skin was leather like, the area where spots were cut out had problems healing and when they eventually did heal, it left a very obvious scare.

This is why we are so cautious with our kids.

Yep, we are pretty anal about suncare with our kids (ourselves too).

It really hit hard last year when a good mate got diagnosed with stage 4 cancer (unsure of the exact wording) a fortnight after his 30th birthday due to a previously cut out melanoma. He passed away 6 months later in November.

No hats/suncream/sunnies = no playing in the sun in our family.

10 moles cut off so far, so not worth taking chances.  Used to burn and peel every summer a s a kid. Now I Always wear a rashie in the water and a hat when in the hit sun.
Saw some of those full length rashie top and pants that some Muslims were wearing, bright blue
Even my 2 yo nephew had a full length with built in baseball cap

The government should do 2 things:

-- ban the sale of any suncream below SPF30
-- list suncream on the PBS (or similar) so that a family can buy a 2lt jug of the stuff and it only costs them $2.50

Such a scheme would pay for itself in reduced cancer rates.

Great idea considering I paid just under $19 for a new bottle of Sunscreen.

Damned if you do, damned if you don't. I also have issues with the chemicals, but having watched my dad die of a melanoma secondary cancer decided that it's important for the kids to wear it. Our lifestyle means we're outside a lot. The kids have sunblock put on before they get dressed now and reapplied every 2 hours. Hats, appropriate clothing and *try* to keep them inside between 10 and 3. We live in our camper so easier said than done ;)

Just as an aside, most people don't put on enough sunscreen when they do apply, so it's not doing it's job properly anyway....

Sunscreen will not stop some melanoma types. Only a physical barrier like long clothing are truly effective.

Totally agree. I was advised by a medico that Suncreen lotion will stop sunburn but not necessarily BCC's etc.

Im Terrified of what damage sun can do to our bodies, im only 32 but when I was in my late teens and early twenties I didn't care, was very lazy with sun protection, id happily work out in the yard all weekend on a pair of footy shorts and nothing else....how Stupid!

I now may look like a knob when im out side in the sun because im literally covered head to toe, akubra hat, Buff covering face and neck, long sleeve shirt, board shorts with footy socks pulled up or long trousers, sunglasses (this is even my fishing attire).  When swimming its a longsleeved rashie and boardies, sunglasses and soft hat with neck flap & sunscreen.

Im sure ill pay for my errors in sun protection when im older, but I make sure I drill it into my kids and they are sufficiently covered up. Having a tan is not worth the risks!

We were very surprised this year when we signed the boys up for nippers. The youngest in U7 is on the beach from 8.30 to 10.30 and eldest in U8 is on beach from 8.30 to 11.00. During this time there are no stops to reapply sunscreen as they are in and out of the water and running and diving in the sand for different events. We thought they would be pushing the sun safe message a little more. Most kids have just got the pink singlet on with no sleeves to cover up. The kids wear no hats (a little hard I must admit). But at school if they have no hat they arent allowed to play. We do go hard on the sunscreen before and during and they still come home a little red sometimes.

Ditto.................but mine wasn't my fault. I had a mother telling me "get out in the sun, you're a pasty white kid!"
I would burn, blister and peel. I even hid under the car at the beach one day to avoid going in the sun......

These days I get called "Russell Coight" for the way I dress ( and look - apparently) but I'd rather look like a tosser that's alive than a cool dude who's dead.
My kids don't get an option. It's hat, sunscreen and middle of day limits.
When they're 18 and the government says they're old enough to make decisions for themselves, then they can.  :police:

Nothing funny about skin cancer at all, but it amazes me the number of people who still don't get it.
In regards to the whole sunscreen discussion in previous threads......................
Why would you use a lower rated sunscreen? You don't use a thinner seatbelt, or softer hard hat? People are ignorant I think, but what do you do?
Thank god heavens, budha, Allah politically correct inanimate deity or not as your wish may be, that myswaggers are all awesome and perfect and know better.... :cup:

I'm with you though KieranR, cover up beats sunscreen hands down.
I love my fishing shirts and Akubra.

It's in the same boat as smoking - one day it is going to turn around and bite you, but smokers just don't have a handle on it.

I think I am reasonably immune to skin cancer - Maori and Aboriginal heritage on my fathers side, and no evidence of skin problems there - and I was pretty care-free with sun protection when younger. However these days I cover up, short sleeve rashie at all times and sunblock on head and neck (I'm a baldie). Same goes for my kids. I spent 6 hours on Friday in the sun with my kids, from 10am to 4pm with a 45 minute break for lunch which we took in the shade. At that time we all re-applied sunblock (a serious one that you almost can't hide the white on your skin no matter how hard you rub it in, indeed my son still had it showing on his face on Saturday night!) and no-one was sun-burnt, thanks to our diligence.

wife remarked about this very thing as we were driving down the beach at Bribie on ANZAC day.
heaps of kids frolicking near the water - no hats/long sleeve shirts - and in a few instances, no clothes at all for some littlies.

and it was very sunny.

whilst it costs money to keep buying new swimming clothes and hats as the kids grow out of them, the alternative is the future danger of the big C.

Make that 22......... our awesome Government is happy to let our kids drive, vote, drink & apply sunscreen at 18, but they are still pretty much our problem until 22 financially.
