Many 4x4s have break stop and indicator lights in the rear bar as well as the guards.

On the Jackaroo both sets of lights are operational however, on some other makes - eg Patrols - it appears to only be the bumper lights which are on. 

I seemed to remember that this was something to do with the number of lights, however number on the Jackaroos doesn't seem to be any fewer than on the Patrols.  Can anyone answer 'why it is so'?

I had it in writing from Vic roads that it is absolutely legal to have driving lights mounted on the roof rack......having been pulled up years ago for that same offense before the ADR rules changed.

But the maximum 6 forward facing lights is definitely correct.

This topic just made me realise that my camper doesn't have a number plate light!
How did it get registered or don't I need one if just daylight driving?

just wondering...it doesn't use the park lights shining through from the side of the assembly at the same time to illuminate the licence plate? bit old skool to have lights like that, but that's how it used to be done on some styles.

Nope you are correct.. think the angle was 45 degrees?
thus why some of them when wheel carriers are fitted, have those $1.00 cheap square lights fitted to the rear bars instead. I think 80s were bad for that with single wheel carrier.

That's what I tho it as well, but both the Jackaroo and the Patrol have wheels on the rear door, so that is partly why I'm confused...

Not just 'old school', there are LED trailer lights currently being sold with one having the clear lens for the tail light on the side of one light.  Saves buying an additional light, so why not.

The patrol has lights in the rear bar to allow for the spare wheel.
It was early in the GQ's that Nissan started fitting light in the rear bar.

I also read somewhere that the lights in the rear bar were because the ADR specified a max height for the tail lights from the ground. 4WD vehicles with tail lights in the body work were too high, so most of them popped an extra set in the rear bar and disconnected the body work lights. There was one model however that decided lowering the rear end by a few mm(like 40ish) meant they didn't have to add the extra lights.

I think it was the spare tyre obstructing the lights from an angle e.g. the Patrol and Pajero need bumper lights but the Prado doesn't and it's rear lights are higher than both the Patrol and Pajero.

That was long ago, before Prado's. I'm near certain it was the land cruiser that was 'lowered'.

Must quote this to my bro with the Kermit 'Candy' car.  Will be interesting to get his '2c' worth.

As for Mansfield, etc, as I understand it the 'TOG' are now a whole of state show, operating all over the place, rather than regional as previously.

Each region has their own Highway Patrol, however we also have State Highway Patrol and they travel all over the state as the name suggest. There is also a heavy vehicle section and a off-road motorcycle section.

moral of this story (in Victoria anyway  )
* no HID's (which I knew but tried my luck) lol
* no more than 6 forward facing lights ( if you have h4 globes they are counted as one per side )
* must be mounted in pairs
 And last but not least
* work lights are not required to be in pairs on the rear of the car.
