Essential Spares to carry.
« on: July 25, 2013, 06:52:05 PM »
Hi all
Apart from usual hoses and belts for the cruiser, what essential spares should I carry? Bearings have been replaced on the truck last Friday. Bearings are new in the CT. the trip is from Melbourne up the guts to the Gulf, up to Kakadu, Bungles and maybe Flinders Ranges.

I would still take spare bearings. I had new bearings fitted before our Kakadu trip 2 years ago and one failed on the trip.

Fuses, duct tape, tyre valves, fuel filter, air filter,

Doesn't matter what you take as you never seem to have what you break...lol

You cant go wrong with any spares but I reckon a spare set of keys is very important.

Thanks, you just reminded me to upgrade RACV to the highest level. Definitely spare keys for sure and thanks everyone you prompted the memory bank.

Hi Wayne
It may be worth think about some garden hose (or something similar) around your under vehicle lines, brake lines fuel lines...you get the idea, this will prevent damage from rocks and the like when on rough roads.  A spare air filter is almost essemtial when hitting dirt roads, but you have already done the Tanami, you know that.
If I think of more, that haven't already been suggested, I will mentioned them.

You have a new car and new trailer.

If it has all been serviced, I don't think you will need to take much at all... something to patch a hole in a radiator, and new coolant...

I agree though on the tape, toilet paper, good first aid kit which is not really spare and I am certain you would have that.  WATER

Hi Wayne,

I would add a puff pack of Graphite powder. (You can get it at bunnings for $10) It's best to puff some into all the locks before you leave (on the trailer) as the dust will make it hard to get the keys in. Graphite is the best for this as WD40 etc actually makes the dust stick more! It makes a huge difference. (I lock all the trailer latches when travelling)

Cable ties are very handy and a few different sizes can perform a lot of repairs.

In the last 6500klm I lost a pin from one of the drag chain shackles on a corrugated road so a spare shackle was handy.

A spare prescription for any medication you might need.

Safe travels.

Cheers Dave.
