Hey

Went new boot shopping today. We don't have a lot of choice down here and tried a few different brands. He RM's were really comfortable but at $420 not cheap.

Tried some Thomas cooks and I think slatters and they were no where near as comfortable. These will be everyday work/ dress boots so will get a work out.

Are R.M's as good as they feel or are there others out there as good and how long should they last?

I have 2 pairs and wear them pretty much every day. I have one pair with the original sole and a newer pair with the 'comfort' sole. I much prefer the comfort sole. I reckon they're worth it. I have had mine for about 3 & 4 years and polish them every month or 2 and they're holding up great. My only issue is the leather on the toe is soft and they do scratch easily.

I use RM as my daily work boots (office) and the are pretty comfortable.

I buy mine from one of their outlet stores for about $250 for a slight blemish that you can't really see.

Been told that the Army is about to be issued with RMW boots id say in a different style to the traditional.

I have a black pair and a brown pair.

All my other shoes went in the bin.

It is a one of purchase that will last a long time if looked after.

I run 2 pairs of RM's, one pair for work and one pair for a bit dressier occasions.
Awesome boots that will last for years.
The comfort sole is definitely the way to go.
As always you get what you pay for.

Hi,
   I wore a pair of their dress boots for years, riding both push bike and motor bike to work, so they got a work out with the rain and weather.


When the sole was very worn and the leather looking pretty chatty, I had them sent off for repair by the dealer.


Now I'm not sure they sent me back a new pair of boots, but their repair was more a complete refurbishment. Even new elastic sides had been fitted.
The looked, felt, and smelled like new.


I bought a second pair while the first went off for repair, and the two pairs lasted me more than 25 years, and one pair is still in excellent condition.


Yep, not cheap, but very good value for $.

RMs are a great boot , well made, quality materials etc etc. Yes they are pricey but they will last. I have had a few pairs over the years and always loved them.
Last time I bought boots though, I purchased Thomas cook Doggers - at $220 they were significantly cheaper than RMs. I have worn the EVERYWHERE .....  from out to dinner at flash restaurants , to chasing cattle through paddocks, and they have worn extremely well. In fact they have so far lasted me 10 years, and are still going strong.

Another brand that is as good as RMW is Red Wing Boots.
They come in a lot more different styles than the RM's.
Not cheap but worth the $$

I love my RM's have always had them for my horse riding boots as they have the flat sole and have a black and brown pair for good boots, I usually look for them when places have them on special sometimes horseland  and places like that would run specials on them.  My black pair I picked up when Ray's were clearing stock $100 couldn't go passed them for that price.

RM in Toowoomba just had a factory seconds special.

$250 a pair or $400 for 2 pair.

There was nothing wrong with the grade.

I have two pair of RM's and an old pair of Redwings.

My oldest pair were the "Gardener" with thick leather and sole. Still going very very strong.
The other are the standard brown ones. The elastic has gone but they still look very good.

I bought both pairs in 1991.

I haven't worn the Redwings in ages but are still in great condition and sit in my cupboard and get a polish every 3 or 4 months.

If you can get the dress boots for $250ish I would say that would be excellent buying. Comparable to buying a good pair of Lloyds at a similar price.

I too have a black and brown pair. Both well worth the money. Worn as both dress and going out shoes. On my feet for over 12hrs a day at work and they are by far the best work shoe I have had.

I wear redback work boots, usually $95 for the steel caps, elastic sides..

Very very comfy, i wear them every day and this pair is about 5 years old, maybe 6..

+1 to everything here.

I have a pair of RMs that are worn every day. Easily the best shoes I've ever had. My feet are an odd size, I can get the RMs custom made to my exact size. They're fantastic. I have the leather sole which is great for a dress boot (and much cooler, important here), but its probably not as hard-wearing as the other options.

As soon as I can afford a second pair, I'm going to pick some up.

Agree the RM's are the best boot going.  Just a couple of tips.  The leather sole ones are slippery on some surfaces and the leather wears out quicker than the rubber sole ones do.
Don't use Kiwi polish on them (or any other alcohol based polish).  Use the proper RMW leather treatment when they are brand new, then use the RM polish when they need polishing.
If they ever need repairs, get the RM factory to do it.  I had my first pair of RM's wrecked when a local bootmaker accidently put the needle through the leather upper when replacing the leather sole.  That hole was right where the boot flexes just behind your toes and that started a tear in the leather.

That's why the new pair (which are now 10 years old and have walked on every continent) have a rubber sole, and if they ever need fixing, they will be going to the RM factory.

for that sort of coin is a lot of pairs of double pluggers - my last pair of double pluggers lasted well over 6 years at $4.20 mite stick with them

I bought a pair of RM's about 12 years ago which unfortunately died from neglect - the surface finish started cracking because I failed to treat them properly.  Still a great boot to wear, just don't look good.

Bought a new pair last year when they were offering a free rain jacket with a pair of boots.  These will be looked after better! and should last me the rest of my life.
