Hi Dazzler
I have two pairs of raw boots, and you can believe they have copped a workout here, we do not have cement or bitumen anywhere.  Great boots and comfy, long lasting too.

! still have the pair I was married in 29 years ago.
The still fit - just, which is more than I can say for the moleskins I bought for the same occassion!    ;D

Funny you should say that as I resemble that remark.

My Craftsman RM's I have at the moment are the 3rd pair I have owned since 1974. This pair I have had since 1987 and like B&B wore them to my wedding.
They are leather soled but have had a rubber lining put on the soles to minimise wear. Wear them quite often but not as much as I used to.
Currently need the elastic replaced which I should get done soon.

Great investment seeing I go through normal work shoes every 12 months @ $100 a pair. $350 for a pair of RM's now seems cheap.

That's why you need a custom pair made by RM mate :)

R.M. Williams used to make custom made Army G.P. boots when I was serving, for soldiers with hard to fit feet. They were a beautiful boot.

They were calf leather for parade boots, not sure of the type of leather they used for regular use, but I was very envious of those that had them.

Wouldnt have thought too many Bogans would be buying $420 shoes................ >:D >:D

I guess they'll last forever if they're never worn...

I've got a few pairs of RMs, been wearing them for much of my life. I only get a couple of years out of them though, so I'm always surprised (and a bit suspicious) when folks say they got 20 years out of theirs.

Good thing is that my wife sells my old pairs on eBay for $50-70 so the overall cost of ownership is not too bad. In the last few years I've also started to wear Ariat hightops, which are half the price. Boots wear better and last longer if you can give them a spell, let them dry out.

About three years ago I finally bit the bullet and bought a black pair of the R.M. Williams boot (airport friendly ones). Loved them, can wear with a suit etc. However the other week discovered one of the boots developed a crack across the sole exposing the shank etc. Not happy, took them into the Canberra store and they sent them off to the factory. About two weeks later I have the boots back, repaired with a new sole on both at no cost to me. Very happy camper indeed! Excellent service.

Been a long time since I bought a pair. In this disposable age, no one has mentioned you can resole a leather soled boot (if you can find a bootmaker still). I think I resoled mine about three times.
That's how you get 20 years out of them! Well actually, I half soled them as a full resole requires the heel to be removed... The boot maker will replace the elastic sides if required too.

I used to think $200+ for shoes or boots was silly, then I tried them, and like a quality bed it's money well spent. Your feet can handle a lot of punishment, until you're older... at which point any prior mistreatment comes back to haunt you. Look after your feet...

I have a pair of 10 year old RMs that have been worn three or four times a week, all day each time. Apart from having new heels put on by a bootmaker they are still in excellent original shape and show no signs of falling apart anytime soon.

I always have two or three pairs of 'dailys' because shoes need 24+ hours of downtime between use to allow the moisture to evaporate. So I switch boots every day. You get many more years of use out of your footwear if you do this. Currently am using the RMs, a pair of black Blundstone elastic sided boots (tip, always get the pricey Blunnies, their cheap models are crap) and a pair of Merrell hiking boots (Merrell makes quality footware).
