Patrol 4.2 Injectors done
« on: April 30, 2013, 01:19:16 PM »
So its time to get the injectors done, I want a drive in drive out job. Apparently some places thats a hard concept to grasp
GU TD42Ti (2003 turbo intercooled running Garrett turbo)

I've been ringing around getting some prices... and like my tyre thread, boy there are some people with large profit margins.

Prices range from
$54ea changeover + mystery price for a drive in/drive out job (waiting for call back since Thursday)

$541 exchange + 2 hrs labour @@ $99/hr = ~$740 + need car for 1/2 a day. But its a 1/2 day drive there, but I have had work done by them before and was extremely impressed.

$1100, (Bit cheaper than the price he quoted on my GQ years ago @<$3000!) inc tappets and injectors. Need car for 2 days. (cold test and warm test)

$1800 No idea what you got for that, they were abrupt, didnt want to answer anything really and **** off basically.

Another place gave me the war and peace bull**** story (everyone else was upfront) and weren't interested in giving me a quote without a $500 "Diagnostic" test anything upto $5000

Only one mentioned that there are more than 1 type of injectors on the 4.2, one model has a wire and differnet head on injector #1.
If its the one with the wirre, then it needs a new injector heed - its extra (thats after 2005 model).
His price was $420 + $30 washer kit + $150 labour = $600. Again have had work done here many times, and I have only had one bad experience.

So still waiting on calls back.. Interesting thought the differences in attitude, price, and what you get.

I just had mine done by Hiflow in VIC $285 exchange but mine are the non intercooled type which are not as complicated as yours :)

Best price I could get for any exchange units with decent quality nozzles was $85 each through afi in Brisbane.

Couldn't agree more on the good workman ship, but Wagga is a zombie town to try and waste 1/2 a day!.

it pisses me off with such differences, and how hard it is to get a straight answer to what I see as a simple question. Surely they have been asked ONCE in the last 15yrs they have been in business for "Drive in/Drive out" jobs... Yet they are so confused on the phone.

Had them done in my 06 Triton last August.
4 x Injectors $2427.52
Gaskets seals filter & tubes $729.30
Code Injectors $125.73
Labour $292.50

Total $3575.05

I was told that they were expensive for the comon rail diesel but holy crap that was more than I expected. However it performs well now, I tow a loaded work trailer 3 tonne and you dont know its there.

Gees, I could get a complete GQ for that.

Lost, I know mine is a different beast but when I got the new RD28T in mine they were $62 each. Labor was included in the engine swap.

Can't rush these things..

I have booked in again at second option place on Monday week after next... I just cant get to/from Lilydale to drop off and get home again at #1 selection which Shits me...
Same for Rankins.. but their price has gone up since last phone call.

Still working on options for the injectors, MTQ/HiFlow are cheapest for private, but when my spanner man called price was nearly double.. so I think they are weeing in his ear, or we aren't all talking about the same model GU....

Other option for the injectors is a Mobile Diesel Dude in Mornington that Kent has used before.

Have only heard bad reports about rankin and mtq. Only personal experience was with mtq and would NOT recommend.

Have you tried 4x4 workshop in frankston. I haven't had anything done there but been in a few times and they seem to be passionate about what they do which is usualy a good start.
Anyone got first hand experience.from them?

Only read bad reports on other forums about rankin so can't verify that.
As far as mtq I trucked my gq ute there as I had replaced my timing cover, injector pump and alternator off a gu and didn't want to fire it up without the timing being done properly. Also got them to put in new injectors and had to remove a grub screw for the oil feed for the new vac pump.
Nothing major was wrong but they drilled and tapped the grub screw which they said they wouldn't cos of getting swarf in the sump and after a couple of weeks I noticed they hadn't put the locking bolt in the back of the injector pump as fell into the engine mount and must have been 'too hard' to retrieve.
Was charged for the tappets to be done as I asked but no evidence of the rocker cover coming off. (hey they may well have done it but I doubt it cos its one of them things you can't open the bonnet and see)

Too be honest I wouldn't trust them or any diesel 'specialist' or general mechanic for that matter unless I was good friends with them hence why I am extremely reluctant to give my car to anyone and why I have an old car I can work on myself.

I find it impossible to get a straight answer or even consistant service from any shop associated with 4wds.

The car is completely different.. I wish I did it 18mths ago.

Throttle response is now so instant and crisp. I didn't realise how doughy it had become...

The R&R of injectors etc + fitting of new fuel filter etc

Kent at Glenmount Automotive 9544 4000... ;) He does all the work on the GU...
Owns GU 4.8 with 35's big lift, blah blah blah - the works himself which also doubles as the loan car to mates :D

Injectors were taken care of by  Kevin from Direct Diesel Injection services.
He does all Kents injectors/pump work.
