Smev stoves.....again...
« on: January 31, 2013, 04:42:51 PM »
So, I am eyeing off the Smev 2 burner stoves. Want to drop it into our Cub Brumby CT pull out stainless steal kitchen.
Have read that some folk think that they are too small.
Can anyone tell me the measurement from the center of one burner to the other ?
There is only us 2 and we use a sit-on-top small 2 burner now so ......
but can we just attached a hose to the gas bottle, or ????
Saw a online site that was selling these cook tops for under $400 so thought that was pretty good price.

Thanks in advance...

All we do is plugin to the Gas bottle via a quick connect fitting mounted on the trailer.
It will require a hose and regulator to use a normal gas bottle.
I am on the IPad now but will send pics from work tomorrow showing the connections.

Thanks for those photos Rob............its all helpful !!!!

Wondering if anyone has at their finger tips the size of the hole for a  2 burner Smev. I know the size of the stove, but I think the cut out is slightly smaller ?

We have one of these stoves and while it is good we struggle to put a frying pan and a saucepan on the other burner. and one is large and one is small. It is easy to clean and works well but we often suplement it with a single burner butane stove on the bench next to it.

The plasticky stuff where the nobs are has melted on ours. Something to do with using slightly too large a frying pan. Need the bigger pan for a stir fry or big bacon and egg brekky.

You might want to just check the size of your frypans.  Either go with the smaller pan, or be prepared for the labelling bit to quickly look pretty second hand.

That's a pretty good price. Thanks for the link! Might get one myself..

As an alternative, are the 3-burner Dometic's any good?? = http://rvme.com.au/eshop/Dometic-Cramer-3-Burner-Hob.html   Size wise it's a bit bigger than the 2 burner, for obvious reasons - but the alternative 3 burner layout might mean separation is greater? I'm not sure, might have to check on their respective company websites.

Thanks for the link spargo...the layout the 2 burner Cramer looks good. because their burners are not side by side, should give you slightly more room for pots...pricing wise not much different to the smev.

Yes Baz 1 we hope to cut a hole in the stainless steel and put it in..............guess the rim supports it, hoping someone here might know the answer to that one.
good price here....

The box that it comes in has a template. You cut out one of the sides of the box, and then stencil around it. It's a good system, and works well.

The stove has little arms on the underside - you drop it into the hole and then use a screwdriver to rotate the arms around so it doesn't come back out. If you want to do a pro job, run some clear silicone around the edge to stick it down nicely, and wipe off any extra.

We've got one in our camper - came with it installed. It's great. It's got a braided gas hose that curls up in the kitchen for storage, and clicks into the gas quick-disconnect when setting up. Takes 5 seconds. The quick-disconnect is one of my favourite things about the camper.

We installed another one into the father-in-law's stainless kitchen a few months back. Cutting the stainless was easiest with the angle grinder - the jigsaw just kept breaking blades. A quick clean up with a file, and it was good to go. When you do cut the hole, make sure you check beforehand for any structure inside the kitchen - internal dividers, double-skinned walls, support bars, etc. He had a mobile gasfitter come around and put on a long gas hose with a a regulator and a POL / caravan type fitting on the end to go straight onto his gas bottle. Not as easy as the quick-disconnect, but means he didn't need to worry about getting it certified. Only cost him $100 I think, of which about $70 was parts and material anyway.

Good luck, it's a great addition to a kitchen, just makes life easy and decreases setup times.

Cheers,
Matto :)

This is my bugbear with those stoves, whether 2,3 or 4 burner; the burners are too close together so unless using small pots you can't use them simultaneously anyway.

x eleventy. Thus why I went for the 4 burner that has an option for a grill which I don't have. You shouldn't need a cooktop/burner + an extra single burner to cook dinner.

Its hard cause most kitchens don't have masses of room, if you need that room, go a caravan!

Thanks so much for the pic and the replys....Have ordered a 2 burner Cramer....

My gas stove at home is a 4 burner and the 2 burners I use all the time are 23cm apart and its not a problem for us.  ( Mostly only the 2 of us )

Ordered if through Queanbyan RV, which is not far from us $442.00 which encluded postage and a $30.00 insurance thing.

Can't wait to get it and get hubbie to put it in...

Out of interest with the SMEV stoves, once installed do they sit flush with the flat surface they have been installed in? For example, as per the first photo in this thread www.myswag.org/index.php?topic=26285.msg406102#msg406102 my kitchen is a standard kitchen which is attached to the tail gate, and folds out. If I installed a SMEV stove on the portion which folds out, when I tried to fold the kitchen back up would the lid of the stove get in the way as it protrudes up from the steel kitchen surface?

Cheers

Baz,

That looks like the Xtrail stainless kitchen, which is the same as ours. Father-in-law has a stainless kitchen from Huntsman on eBay. Both these kitchens have the fold over bench off-set from the kitchen top - when its folded over its not dead level with the kitchen top, but set down a bit. The result of this is that when its flipped over, it sits up from the kitchen top.

Nb- it would pay to check your kitchen before, vs relying on me. But I'd be 95% confident that you'll be fine, from looking at your photos.

Good luck!
Matto :)
