Tassie Fires - Anyone swaggers caught out

Hey all

You may not be aware but things have gone pretty bad with the fires particularly in the south of the state.  The area out towards Eaglehawk Neck (Dunally, Coppin, Dodges Ferry) have all been hit hard with many from our community loses property and there are a few missing.  A  lot of caravaners/campers have headed down south and the parks have filled up apparently.

If you need somewhere to stay we can point you in the direction of some okay free camps in the Kingston area south of Hobart.  Its not legal to camp in a couple of areas however that wont be a problem as I can arrange an exemption while the fires are on. 

We also have hot showers available if needed.

Send me a pm if you need assistance and I will give you my mobile #.  We have an acreage so you can park the CT up the back if you wanted to and check into a motel for a few days.

My sister in law and her family just moved to Tassie, in fact on Christmas Eve, just south of Kingston.  One main reason was to get away from the hot weather in Qld!  So yesterday they had over 40 and we had 30. And to think when they arrived their kids were complaining about the cold.   Don’t figure hey.  Kevin

we have friends living at Carlton, been trying to contact them since yesterday but not heard from them yet. i assume they are fine and just busy dealing with the situation at hand. not good that so many properties have been lost, can only hope the one unconfirmed death doesn't eventuate also.

Its was definitely a hot one yesterday and to top it off we lost power for over 5 hours but thats nothing compared to the poor buggers who have lost everything

Does anyone know if the area around Carrick (20km S/W of Launceston) is or have been affected by the fires?? Daughter is heading down to the International Girl Guides Jamboree, leaving today, due into camp tomorrow arvo. Hope all Tassie Swaggers are safe.

hopefully a local will be more knowledgable, but the fires i've seen on the news didn't look to be around that area, further to the East at Bicheno and the worst was East of Hobart where the news has been talking about.

Anyone in the Hobart area that would like to help we have a friend with a food van that is asking for donations of food. She is heading off to feed around 70 Tas fire service crew and it sounds like she could be doing this for the next 7 days at this stage.

After the Vic fires Tasfire spent a lot of time in Vic and brought back some good ideas.  Historically they advised that everyone go home to defend if capable but they really didnt identify what 'capable' was.

This system is really good.  Though there are very very very very very few properties down here that are properly fire prepared sadly.

Tasfire must have taken all the good ideas back with them as the CFA site shat itself yesterday.

There are very few properties in general that are fire ready.

You can say that again, people are widely optamistic in their abilities in fighting fires.

In 2006 a wildfire ran thru our farm near Mansfield, it took a whole strike team to save 1 farmhouse and hayshed.  34 CFA firefighters, 5 tankers, 2 slip ons, and a control vehicle, and 6 family members with another 2 slip ons.  The numbers dont add up, it is hard yakka.

I will never do it again. If there is a next time, I will walk away and reduce risk to others.

The tas fire site is similar to the Vic one, (when working).

Wat really pi55es me off is that we have pollies telling us that the system is ready (grabbing airspace on TV), and the next day the system crashes.  Peter Ryan, bow your head in shame.

I knew somebody that stayed and saved his home once . He said next time it could all burn for all he cared he would not go through it again, and this guy was an AG pilot who was reasonably fearless!
