It's the safest place to be one week in four

So very true Estelle,
Hmmm As I say to the kids, I know it's not easy being a kid hey?
Well, it's not easy being a parent either  ;D

One thing that does my head in, With all three, when asking who did that, who's is that, Who's turn is it to wash up, who left the rubbish on the floor, IT IS ALWAYS the two that it doesn't concern answering for the one that needs to answer. GRRR

A keen country lad applied for a salesman's job at a city department store. At the end of his first day on the job his boss fronted up and asked, "How many sales did you make today?"
"One," said the young salesman.
"Only one," blurted the boss, "Most of my staff make 20 or 30 sales a day. How much was the sale worth?"
"100,000 dollars," said the young man.
"How did you manage that?" asked the flabbergasted boss.

"Well," said the salesman "this man came in and I sold him a small fish hook, then a medium hook and finally a really large hook. Then I sold him a small fishing line, a medium one and a huge big one. I asked him where he was going fishing and he said down the coast. I said he would probably need a boat, so I took him down to the boat department and sold him that twenty foot schooner with the twin engines. Then he said his Volkswagen probably wouldn't be able to pull it, so I took him to the car department and sold him the new Deluxe Cruiser."

The boss took two steps back and asked in astonishment, "You sold all that to a guy who came in for a fish hook?"

"No," answered the salesman "He came in to buy a box of Tampons for his wife and I said to him, 'Your weekend's shot, you may as well go fishing.'"

I'll keep it short. 3x girls, 17 to 11, missus, even the bloody cat was female...... I have a 400lt beer fridge in the garage... The end.

Bullfrog, I feel your pain mate..... 2 girls, 16 and 11, the wife of course, and the dogs a bitch( ;D)........

Buddy, the budgie, is a bloke (well, he's blue, so i'm assuming he is), but he can't hold a stubbie, so he's no fun  :'(

Thank god for sheds and Myswag :cup:

And on the subject of teenagers, they also make you miss Myswag meets cos they reckon its their right to use your house to have 60 of their closest ( ???) friends over just to celebrate the fact that they are 16. No respect.............

My mate wins, his teenage son wouldn't get off his Xbox for any reason

So he grabbed a sledge hammer, asked him politely to do a simple task, gave him 10 min, said firmly "I won't ask again"

10 min later, Xbox in 10 million pieces

Didn't solve anything but he fealt good

My four contributions to this thread:

1) When some of the guys at work got together to film a video for http://www.itgetsbetter.org/ I thought "that's a bloody good idea for dads too!".

2) One thing I've found about being a dad is that, whenever you're with the kid(s) and you meet someone, they (almost invariably) say "ah! yes, [insert age here], that was a good age, it's all downhill from there!". Would be nice to get some positive reinforcement from time to time.

3) When my first was only a couple of months old, the family took the dog for a walk down to the local shops. I stayed outside with the kid in a sling and the dog while SWMBO went inside ... the Optometrist closes her shop and then comes over and pats the dog, obviously a "dog person", chatting away (mainly to the dog) and then notices the sling ...

"what have you got in there? another critter?" ...

"yes," I say, "a little human critter". I open the sling ...

she recoils ... and then says ... "well, there went your life" and with that she gets up and walks away!

4) Irrespective of the above, I love spending time with my 5 y.o. ... looking forward to when the 1 y.o. is a bit older (can walk, talk, and doesn't require a nappy) ... good times ahead (I hope ... please don't disillusion me!)

Our 18 year old only child daughter, has sort of moved out of home and comes back a couple of times a week with big basket of "BOY' clothes to be washed.  She has left me with her father, two dogs and a cat, all males. Now how did that happen???

It's not all bad, jnik...by all accounts they all do turn into humans again at some stage.

Mine is going on 20, has been working in EnZed for the past 5 months as part of his business management degree and is returning shortly to Australia.

I'm wondering how I'm going to take that, considering how nice and quiet it has been here.  ;D

I've always taken the stance of "My house, My rules." but it still hasn't stopped him from using the place like a drop in centre. ::)

There is a fine line between having them not home at all and using and abusing the house...but end of the day, if the lad is under my roof, I know he is safe.

Classic line there McGirr...don't think it will work on only one kid however.  ;D :cup:

Reminds me of a couple of years ago, when I was restoring my boat.

Shitty job, grinding off some really rough/mouldy crap from the inside of the boat. I come inside, all covered in white powder (except for where the filter/goggles/muffs were), daughter (~2 at the time) is quite stunned to see me like that. I go to the fridge and get a beer.

Next day, same thing, but this time I go straight past the fridge and get into the shower. Two minutes later the shower curtain is pulled back ... and there's my darling daughter, offering me a beer!

I have 4.  3 boys, 1 girl.  14, 13, 5 & 3.  Love them all to death.  Mostly well behaved 95% of the time.  I never get back answered, never have the fridge raided, they go to bed when they are told, but they don't help at all with any housework.  None of them will inherit anything from me.

Just confirming that my kids being 18 and 20 are on par with most other teenagers out there.

Where do I start....

They drive your car and think fuel appears in it over night.

They think their beds are made up automatically

They will eat your fridge out but leave the empty wrappers etc in the fridge so as not to let you know they ate it.

Your wallet is their mobile eftpos machine

Bath towels were designed to be used as floor mats

Unless your on Facebook you cannot understand them and the stress they are under

They know everything and I don't understand

Bills are things dad pays as I have more experience paying them

There car needs service and you stand there at the counter and they say you pay and I will pay you back.....by 2019

They forget to tell you things and expect you to drop everything to take them somewhere, pay for something or pick them up

They ask for your advice but then say you don't understand , yes I was born at the age of 40 and never went through what they are going through

I am sure I have missed a lot but you get the idea.

You have to love them......Well most of the time.

Mark
Mark you have it spot on I just read this out loud to the wife while laying in bed. She pissed herself laughing saying all that happens to us so don't worry you are not alone. Empty packets in the fridge, cupboards just Shits me. Use to have one water jug in the fridge got sick of filling it when I wanted a cold drink and it was always empty. Seems that was all I was doing plus I ended up with the Luke warm tap water every time. A second jug was added with a request to fill them when half full. Now three jugs same stuff happens unbelievable.

Here's my take on kids or parenting, its only my opinion but it is based on my experience as a kid and as a parent!

One thing I am sure we all agree on, is even though they try our patience when they are teenagers for all the reasons already mentioned in this thread we all love our kids and wouldn't give them up for the world........would we? LOL

I have 4 of the buggers, g22, b18, b15, g10, they are not bad kids really. They haven't given us any trouble through school, or with police and are generally pretty well behaved at home. But like everyone elses kids they can think the world owes them a favour, putting things away after they use them is a struggle, they cant be told anything because they know best, electricity and water and food is their right and their friends have everything handed to them on a silver platter so they should have everything they want when they want it also!

So Mark yep your kids are on par with most teenagers!

But what I wanted to really say is in our case we as parents have got better at it as we have learnt from our mistakes. I dont want to single out the older two kids but I pretty much blame us as parents for any downfalls they may have in life and likewise we pat ourselves on the back for how the younger two are turning out......I contribute this pretty much because of our parenting....or to be more precise our ability to learn from our mistakes as parents. Have others found this to be the case also or is it just coincidence that our kids have got better behaved the more we had?
Is it only us that probably spoilt their first born a bit too much so therefore the first born is a different creature to say the youngest who has been parented better? LOL

Anyway we wouldn't change a thing, we are lucky compared to many parents, even when they drive us mad I would still prefer that than not have them at all. No one said parenting was easy, the important thing is that we are around for our kids.

I also agree that they start coming back to being a human as they get into their 20's, my daughter even though she will never be a financial whiz has become a fine young lady and we are very proud of her. Unlike her teenage years, she is now respectful, polite, well spoken and highly regarded by everyone that she deals with......so there is hope for the rest of them :)

Doctor told us we would never have kids.......... A week later after throwing caution to the wind and you guessed it.
Have tried sueing the doc but no good there.
Now she is 20 and has had the best education as she now knows everything. Not keen on leaving home as it is too good here.
Think we might have to sell up & move to another town while she is at Uni one day. Change all our contact numbers too.

I reckon kids are easy compared to wives. I can't look at mine for more than a minute without my heart threatening to break out of my chest, though the tween and teen years do look like they'll be challenging.

Slightly off topic, but given the time of the year and the subject matter what better time to tell this story.

A few year ago my wife and I were at a Xmas dinner with her work colleagues at the Coopers Ale House here in Adelaide.

Shortly after arriving, a drunk in a Santa suit walked through the door and was stumbling towards the bar.

One of my wives work colleagues leaned over towards my wife and I and whispered 'Salisbury Santa' to which I replied, 'My wife and I live in Salisbury'. Profuse apologies followed and the subject matter shortly moved onto our kids.

My wife and her friend who made the 'Salisbury Santa' comment discovered we shared something in common, we both had children 11 years apart.

I decided to pipe up at that point and stated 'That's nothing, I grew up in Elizabeth and there is only 11 years between me and my mum'.

Wife thought it was hilarious.
