GT Campers' ultimate outback tourer!
« on: November 11, 2012, 10:59:00 AM »
Hi folks, I'm working with a mate on my GT Campers marketing/brochures etc for 2013 and have come up with this image of how a top-line Toyota Hilux Expedition off-road touring vehicle will look.. when I actually get around to building it!

All up cost for this as a brand-new vehicle (disregarding accessories such as front bars etc, that GT Campers can organise) would be less than $80K, drive-away... less expensive than some camper trailers.

So, who wants one?  :D

Wow thats long

I've always wondered why do you go with the tan colour for the boxes?

A set of alloys on the truck would look nicer for the marketing brochure.

Wow thats long

That was my first thought. The off-road capability of the hilux might be compromised by the larger ramp over. (Happy to be politely corrected or educated)  also what about around town,is the length an issue for parking /sightseeing, etc?
given only a roof top tent, its a 5 seated, so would need a seperate tent etc. Is that provisioned?

Looking at that,by time add on chassis extension, cones to our ideal, which is a tray back camper on dual cab,but still not without compromise on our ideals or ideal setup
Why do people ask "What the hell were you thinking?"
Obviously I was thinking I was going to get away with it and not have to explain it....

Did it ever occur to anyone that GT's dry sense of humour might be in play here?

My eyes aren't that good, and it may be a serious idea from GT. But given what photo shop can do these days who knows? A leaf spring front end would indicate a very old model conversion or retro tech personified by GT. Can't imagine him going down that path, or doing up an ancient rig.

Saw one of these at the Cape this year with a bent chassis. Not good.

Might put Independent suspension under the back to stop the chassis breaking?  ;D Sorry GeeTee we are only stirring ;)

Good to see everyone having a giggle :) but this is a serious proposal;
C-Dub, I have an option of an OzTent on my trailers to suit families so tents/beds for four or five is easy, so is the chassis as I have experience/knowledge in that area of vehicle modification... and yes, unlike the conventional and dual-cab conversions thios one's tail will poke out a bit at the local Coles car park...

OzBog, that tan colour is "Inspired by the Australian Landscape"...  8)  and it complements just about any vehicle paint colour and (white, blue, black, red etc) and matches other components such as the tent, trailer stone shields etc. I've also built grey but in my opinion it doesn't look as nice

Dazzler...  ;D ... suspension wise, I've liased with an old-school spring maker to build a bespoke rear leaf spring that will lift the vehicle and provide a nice supple ride even with the extra weight. These springs have worked very well so far

I suppose it's a very limited market.

It would not suit my requirements as I would prefer to have car and camper separate but a good idea.

I'm sure it would be well done, but car-based campers don't suit us.....can't go for a little looksee without packing up camp.

Might be OK for some, though, 'cos there are plenty of Troopie campers etc about.

The advantage compared to a single-cab or dual-cab is this vehicle is it seats and sleeps four/five as well as carrying all the usual GT fruit - pop-up awning, fridge, storage, slide-out kitchen, 70L water etc, in my usual no-fuss, fully-integrated, drive-away package  ;D

I spend some time on expedition portal and like the idea of these.  Wonder how a six wheeler conversion would go for stability?

I suppose it's a very limited market.

True, but I'd be targeting people who tow boats, horse floats, motorbike trailers etc.
