First Time Towing CT ?s

Next week i have to drive 10hrs to pickup my CT is there anything i should be doing before i tow it back it will be just the basic CT with no gear onboard.Should i have the watertank full or empty  and other type hints before i tow back.

Just make sure that it is hitched up correctly, the chains are on correctly,  your electric brake controller is working correctly, and check all lights are working correctly.  If it is empty I wouldn't be putting water in the tank as this weight will be behind the axle, taking weight off the hitch (and worse case scenario lifting the back of the vehicle slightly) which is a recipe for swaying leading to jack knifing- but much more so with caravans than camper trailers I might add.

Give yourself some more room to the car in front to compensate for the extra weight, and don't cut corners as your camper will cut them even more!

Take your time and enjoy, and take regular breaks - 10 hours when you are concentrating on things you normally don't have to concentrate on will increase your fatigue.

Id also take some tools (big shifter and pliers!) and wheel bearing grease.
After a few kays pull over and check the hubs for heat then do it again after about 20 more ;)

make sure you take your tow hitch tongue  ;D

When we picked our Tambo up they reminded us to make sure it was fitted to the car, as they a few customers turn up before who had left it at home,,,, and 10hrs is a long way to go back.

just take it easy and enjoy the drive back :cup:

Is it new or second hand?  Have you inspected it yet?  When I picked mine up I took a small bottle jack and quickly lifted each wheel to do a quick check on any play in the bearings. I had a 2 day trip to return home and glad I did as one of them needed work.  Better there than on the side of the road.

If new I will more than likely come with a spare but no jack or wheel brace.  May be worth buying or borrowing one of those 4 way wheel braces (about $15 from Super Cheap) as the tow's brace mightn't fit.  Mine didn't.  Also a bit of timber to lift up the tow's jack as it may be a bit short for the CT.  Or take a bigger jack.

One problem we had when we picked up a coromal in 2009 was that the trailer plug on the camper was a 7 pin flat plug and the car was round.... had to muck around going to auto store when we realised to get an adapter... so find out what plug the camper has....can save you mucking around...when we bought our swan we made sure that we got the plug we wanted that fitted our car.....

I tow without the tank full if possible... with you just picking it up I wouldn't bother....

Is the CT being supplied with the same style of trailer plug that your tug has?

If the CT has electric brakes - have you already set up your tug with a controller?

If the CT has an onboard battery - have you already set up your tug with an Anderson plug for charging the CT battery?

If it is an old trailer, or even a lower priced new one with used tyres, then check the date of manufacturer of the tyres.  If they are more than about six or seven years old then take it easy on the way home, particularly if it is a very hot day, and replace them as soon as possible.  The date will be written on the sidewall very close to the wheel.  You will see what looks like a little indent with four numbers in it.  This is caused by a little tag that is screwed into the tyre mould at the factory and changed each week.  A number like 1509 for example will  mean the tyre was made during the 15 th week of 2009.
