Random questions
« on: October 24, 2012, 10:03:35 AM »
Nothing real exciting, but I have been curious.
1.  When you pay at a servo for fuel, instead of the standard Macca's "Ya want fries with that" the question is "do you want a receipt"
My personal view is that the servo's are basically theiving bastards, so why is the receipt not standard?
Is it a way of not registering the sale to save paying GST?
Is it the negligible cost factor of the receipt paper and printing?
Is it to stop littering?
Are the operators lazy bastards as well as theiving bastards?

2.  Are the UHF transmissions hampered by glass? If using a hand held UHF CB inside the cabin, is there a benifit of having the windows down?

3. Cattle and horses stand with thier tails toward the wind. Is this so can smell thier own farts better?

4.  When tyres throw stones around, and the trailer hits the stone, how do the stones travel faster than trailer to break tail lights or dent the rear of the vehicle? Without the trailer having a trampoline effect, wouldn't the stone only be propelled at the same speed of the trailer?

5.  Magnetic North is a giant metallic lump that compasses point to. If this is that big and heavy, wouldn't it be safe to assume that our planet should have this weight at the bottom of the world. (If you weighted a beach ball and floated it, the heavier point would be in the water). Would not Ozone float to this higher level and thin out, causing the gaps above Antarctica we were told about years ago. If so, every map is drawn upside down?  Australia shouldn't be "Down Under" we should be "Top of the World (almost)"

Are the operators lazy bastards as well as theiving bastards? When they ask "Do you want a receipt" what they are asking is "Do you need a tax invoice?" which you only really need if you can claim the fuel as a business expense - you will always get the credit card receipt (don't tell me you carry that much cash around with you!)

2.  Are the UHF transmissions hampered by glass? If using a hand held UHF CB inside the cabin, is there a benifit of having the windows down? Glass won't affect the transmission

3. Cattle and horses stand with thier tails toward the wind. Is this so can smell thier own farts better? No, it keeps the dust out of their eyes and nose

4.  When tyres throw stones around, and the trailer hits the stone, how do the stones travel faster than trailer to break tail lights or dent the rear of the vehicle? Without the trailer having a trampoline effect, wouldn't the stone only be propelled at the same speed of the trailer? Explaining the theory of Conservation of Momentum would make my typing finger tired - just accept that it happens!

5.  Magnetic North is a giant metallic lump that compasses point to. If this is that big and heavy, wouldn't it be safe to assume that our planet should have this weight at the bottom of the world. If so, every map is drawn upside down?  Australia shouldn't be "Down Under" we should be "Top of the World (almost)"  Your first statement is completely incorrect, so the rest is not worth commenting on - sorry.

Thanks Pipeliner, at least some of my curiosity has been answered.
1. I normally pay my weekly fuel purchase with cash, and get asked if I want a receipt. When I do use EFTPOS, I do get asked if I want a tax invoice.
2. Good to know.
3. I thought it may have more to do with observation of predators from downwind, but I gues the dust would be an annoyance.
4.Conservation of Momentum.....now there's some heavy reading. Even the YouTube video's don't help. I could just accept that it happens, but would conservation of momentum be changed to an increase of momentum for the rock to accellerate faster than the trailer to rebound onto the tow vehicle?
5. I guess my Geography teacher was wrong about the Magnetic Pole oh so many years ago.
Thanks for the clarifications.
Cheers
Ian

Re number 4, could it be like a tennis ball striking a tennis racket.  The ball rebounds off the racket at a faster speed because the racket is travelling at speed when it strikes the ball. (Or the ball strikes the racket, whatever...)  The stones are striking your trailer which is travelling at a certain speed, therefore giving the stone a rebound effect.   Just my little brain working, which means I am probably wrong.  I am usually wrong, just ask my wife.

Re number 1.  My wife can claim fuel via her salary sacrificing arrangements.  I believe a fuel receipt is not good enough to send with the claim, she needs a tax invoice.  At most servos we need to ask for a tax invoice, which they are happy to provide as their register just prints one out.

The wheel is rotating faster than the speed of the vehicle is my guess.

Actually the footprint of the tyre is not moving at all... it is on the ground. So what spits up the rocks?!  ???

My uneducated guess would be, that as the Tyre rolls on to the object that the object is held in place until the tyre starts to roll off the object releasing pressure allowing the spinning tyre to spit the object out.

I/we pay via EFTPOS all the time, but it's only the last 2-3 mths that I've had to ask for the fuel receipt, always automaticlly given before  ???

We can't claim our fuel, but the receipt has type, how many (ltr), how much per. It all gets entered into a program I have that calculates everything for me...cause I can't add for crap!

Ha Ha..

1) Deal with it and say yes or no  ;D

2) Would do if the glass was a mile thick or lead re-inforced but not from a standard window

3) it is also a there are more blood vessels down that end used for cooling

4) Think of it like a speed boat. You can see the way a propeller pushes the water away from the prop as the prop is fixed but the water not. Same for the stones. As energy is always being applied from the wheels to the road one has to give. it's always the stones

5) Yea, right  ;D

I always ask for a receipt for fuel, I once was pursued by a service station owner down the road claiming I had not paid for fuel, once proved that I had, I never even got an apology from the prick >:(, and he left me to handle the police complaint he had made. ???

I wrote a letter of complaint to Mobil Australia as it was a Mobil service centre, and they never even had the decency to acknowledge it either.

Very good point. In my previous occupation that use to happen and luckily people were able to produce their receipt.

Why is it that our kids, especially sons, grow taller than us. Is it that in 5 generations everyone will be 7 foot tall or are we as adults shrinking  ;D ;D

Actually, like most things, it is a little bit of both.

Statistically Australians (generally) are getting taller and as you correctly surmised, you are in fact shrinking (vertically at least, in my case anyway).

The shrinkage takes place via the degradation and long term compression on the major weight bearing cartilage deposits in your body (knees ad spine mainly)

Its not all bad news though because you will no doubt be happy to know that your ears and nose (also made out of cartilage) will get bigger as you age.

Agreed.  It's not a thing they should ask ... they should just hand over the blardy receipt like every other blardy business in the world.  It saves me time (and precious frustation) and helps those behind me by making the line up move quicker.

When I'm at the counter I say all at once "pump 3, savings, yes" and then let them work it out from there.  Some do and I'm outta there fast but some look at me like I'm speaking a foreign language.

Just like those people that insist on putting 2ltr milk into a plastic bag (and those that ask if I want one) ... I bought it to you without a bag ... I'm sure I'll cope well after I've paid for it ... without a bag.  If I want a plastic bag, I'll ask or simply help myself ... like I did with the milk.

Don't get me started on stupid s**t people do everyday for no other reason than they can't think for themselves.

Why is it that our kids, especially sons, grow taller than us.

I understood the general rule was 'every' son is at least as tall if not taller than his mother which makes men taller than women on average. Sons can be shorter than dad however and that's why we're not a race of giants, although better nutrition and health has seen both sexes grow taller generally.

Any bloke here shorter than his mum because I don't know of any, although I'd expect a very rare exception here and there (aside from congenital malformation and disease of course)

PS: Meant to add that there is no observable rule re mothers/daughters/fathers. Only son > or = mum. It's why they love us so  :-*

And while we are at it!  Re the receipts, yes they should just provide them, but what I get sick of is at grocery shops when you get asked do you have a rewards or similar card/member.  No I don’t, so bloody shoot me!  >:(  Come on, really, if you have and use one of those loyalty cards, surely it is up to you to mention it.  It is not that hard...   There, got that off my chest.   That is a funny saying hey. ‘Off my chest.’  If I had an elephant sitting on my chest that would be something I would like to get off my chest...  Like saying, ‘I was just beside myself.’  Where did that one come from?  How could that ever happen.

Here it comes- "Do you want any filters with that"???

No I just want the exact tobacco and papers I damn well asked for in plain English if you were listening dearie, although without any lectures or well meaning messages from the sanctimonious gits and usual suspects if you can manage it for me luv.

Besides if you think I'm a grumpy old fart beyond redemption now you won't want to know me off the fags.

" No thanks."

Well I don't mind being asked do I want the receipt. For EFTPOS yes, for cash no.  And for every one of you that doesn't want to be asked, there'll be someone who does want to be asked, so the poor old shopkeeper's are in a no win situation.  They probably observe the number of folk who dump the receipt, and, they probably conserve some receipt paper to boot.

As for reward cards, I'm so often off in la la land at the checkout, that I appreciate the checkout chick/guy asking.
