So decided after riding the sons TCR up the street I needed to get a road bike too. Didn’t want to invest a fortune but wanted some quality too. Came close to a new polygon S4 as Iam really impressed with the Aldi MTB. But this came up locally and is in really neat condition, I needed a 59cm so there’s not heaps available secondhand (or new in the shops )

It’s a Merida ride 93 a few years old .

Restored my old 1979 Mongoose BMX for my 12yr old daughter, she loves it but I'm a bit larger than I was back then so her friends ride my old 1980 Redline BMX. The Redline has Nos Snakebelly tyres and repro pads, other than those it is completely original.
Did you know those bikes are worth around $2500 each now?

Those Cobras' sold for $110 with spoke wheels and $145 with the three spoke Tuff wheels. 😲

That Cobra has never been ridden. He bought the frame still in the box and then sourced all the parts using only new old stock to make it original.

hi all,

i was taking my giant roam 2 hybrid out for a spin yesterday and noticed some fine surface rust starting to appear on the front suspension forks?

just wondering what would be the best way to clean that off and if anyone has any suggestions for alternative lubrication, as fork lube around here is bloody expensive (i think)...

could i use 0000 steel wool?

now you are getting technical... :)  i don't really know...

are you talking about a particular type?  these are just shiny tubes going into the lower fork that the front wheel attaches to...

i couldn't imagine they are anything too technical... the bike was only an entry-level hybrid...

i'll try and get a couple of photos, to make my gibberish a bit easier to understand... :)

Looks like an entry level suntour spring fork. Rust is above the travel line. Id just keep riding it and squirt the top of the forks with a bit of lanolin. Not worth 'investing' any money in a fork worth less than $200 to replace.

I would say the same, the stanchions are not coated with anything special and it is only probably a spring shock so there will be no oil to leak out if the top seal is damaged. You could use some scotchbrite to remove the rust and then use a oil or grease to protect. The only problem is then that the dirt will be attracted to it

Plus one for scotch rite, steel wool or even scrunched up alfoil to remove. Maybe some sort of wax to protect. Won't be as sticky.

been doing a reno at a house recently where the guy has a Mongoose something or other and a Redline GT sitting in his lounge room. The Redline GT he has  completely rebuilt like new, completel with NOS tyres and rims that have never been ridden on (cost him $300 for those) and no brakes scuff marking the rims as they've never been used on the rims. The Mongoose is untouched in original condition but is super clean, he reckons it's a $3500 bike being how original it is. I keep looking at the early 80's Mongoose I have and think I should get to cleaning it up one day...maybe...lol.

Picked up a Zipp 808 front wheel for my Track bike with a good strip on it (sewn tyre n tube) for $300, tyre is worth $90 to replace. Not bad for an $800 wheel without rubber.  8) ;D
