No dramas paceman,

There was alot of paint stripper and sanding involved then cheap tins of spray paint from Bunnings. The fork looks great, but I got a bit lazy with the frame and just sanded it before spraying over the old paint and it has some imperfections. The main thing was I didn't let the last coat of colour dry for a full day before doing the clear coat, so I ended up having to re-sand places and touch it up and they stand out when you get up close.

Got my new toy home this morning and fitted my race wheels to it, after a wash down of the running gear. I think it looks pretty damn good.

Well I took the new toy out for a ride this morning and am impressed with how stiff it is. I'll need a few more rides on it to get accustomed to the different handling aspects of it though, to my Scott Foil.

Got me some brand spanked Mercury C.F.30mm wheels today. Reduced from $2300 to $600, bargain and my Adamo seat turned up.

Well they lobbed us M7 riders in with the M5 and M6 riders and was totally humiliated.  I ended up in 8th place over all but it wasn't fair to put us against the younger riders!  The whole reason for having the Masters categories is so that you can race against your own age group.

Had a couple of drinks with the neighbour last night and he let slip he has a new bike coming. He is a sprinter/crit specialist. The frame is a Cippolini rb1k ‘the one’, with Enve cockpit. He is having it built up here with durace di2 because the wogs wouldn’t be happy if they find him bastardising their frame like that. Cost - not much change from $20k. Then there’s the wheels. Not everybody’s bike, but old mate has a reputation for killing frames and cranks with his watt bombs so hopefully this one will be stiff enough. I look forward to seeing it in the flesh.

He doesn’t ride for fun, he races. If he isn’t on the best tool he is going to have to beat whoever is. Same in any discipline or sport. The geometry on it is insane. I couldn’t ride it 20 km.
I ride for enjoyment and am happy with my Avanti lounge chair.

I am jealous of this guy. Its a bike I would LOVE to ride, a work of art.

But you do not need to spend $20k for excellent performance. $5k with careful part selection and eye on geometry will get a bike with exactly the same performance. A quality, but generic carbon frame with good geometry, Ultegra Di2 and some Asian sourced carbon wheels will be just as quick, in the real world.

In no way am I criticising his spending, but at $20k you're paying for brand names. Like buying a Rolex when a Casio tells exactly the same time.

I think it is as much about the athlete. I guarantee that your statement would be correct for a rider such as myself. I guarantee the athlete in question would find the machines a lot different. I agree you are at the thin edge of the wedge looking for performance gains in machines of that value. The frame is actually quite heavy compared with its peers. But it is a sprinters frame with a tiny rear triangle and fat stays. Designed by a flamboyant sprinter to be ridden by flamboyant sprinters who live in a different world to me.
