I have a 29er and a normal 26" MTB as well but I get the most enjoyment from my racing bikes. Pain is good is pain!

I've had my GT Sensor one year today, so I gave it an early morning birthday ride at Lysterfield. Amongst other trails, we road some of the state mountain bike course and aneurysm a couple of times. Bike handled everything perfectly, although I need a new engine for some of those hills. 1x is great if you're Nino Schurter.

I've gotta get out onto the Rail Trails and do Ks on my 29er.

After an exhaustive search both online and at bike shops, we have decided on the 2018 version of the Norco Charger 24" for my son. He is growing out of his 20" both functionally and physically. I wanted something with disc brakes and a trigger shifter. It also has an air fork, rather than a spring, so it is adjustable for his weight and will actually work properly. The only issue I can see with this bike is it might be geared too high with a 36t up front and 11-32 rear, not good for little legs and climbing big hills. I have an 11-42 10x XT shifter/chain/cassette/derailleur from my Scott that I may fit to it, I also have a 30T RaceFace narrow wide chain ring for the front. I'll also change the tyre to be more trail biased. New shipment doesn't arrive until the end of October, which is perfect as he needs to grow a bit and his birthday is early November.

Don't forget that smaller wheels make smaller gears so. 36-32 will be easier for climbing on 24" wheels than full size wheels, especially 29ers.

Don't worry about a calculator, get your son to do the calcs with his legs! If he struggles, get some lower gearing.

Uses mainly the middle ring with the occasional granny gear grind when in the real steep stuff. He has not been out for a while and yesterday kept me on my toes at time which was great. All his swimming is paying off and his legs are much stronger of late.

Was amazing yesterday the amount of roos out on the tracks. At one point we had to stop and watch a roo train of around 30, bound across the track in front of us, must have been moving to greener pastures

I still love my old Brooks Conquest.

After riding it for a few months my arse was finally broken in to the shape of the saddle! 

that was in 1993.

Still riding that saddle today.

Been around Australia on a big (slow) lap, up to the Cape, across the Simpson twice and a lot of commuting klms.

I'm still on the Coda saddle that came with my new Cannondale Super V in 2000. It just works for me, so why change... looks a bit dog-eared these days but I think I'll just get it re-padded and covered.

You lot are bad people... I spent 2 hrs last night working out:
a) Can I fit bigger wheels to my old Cannondale for hacking around town on; with 26" wheels it's too slow, but it has pannier racks on it and disc tabs... It looks like I can squeeze some 700x25C wheels in....
b) Can I fit some 27.5" wheels into the wife's 2012 Giant Trance to make that quicker as well... the answer is possibly...

I've picked up some more 'parts' in the last week. A Scott Aspect 45 from council cleanup, only needed a QR skewer in the front and some TLC. A giant roam with a badly dented frame, but otherwise near new parts to fix up son 2's bike that doesn't have any brakes at present and an old Avanti road bike to update to a new commuter and ditch the current flat bar.

The Scott looks pretty good for a 'camping' bike, but might look a bit too good for thieves.

All up the shed needs to shed about half a dozen bikes, and I'll need a few days worth of time to wrench the rest into shape.

I've got to stop looking at gumtree etc.
