Tried a 1x11 conversion on the weekend. Aside from almost installing the chain the wrong way and a couple of trailside tweaks on the maiden voyage it worked great. One lower gear, a bit more at the top for higher speed. Glad I stepped past 10spd, I wouldn't have got the same range on the 1x setup.

I've been thinking about going 1x10 from my current 3x10, I only use the middle and small ring at the moment. I'm concerned about losing range though.

I would not be concerned of losing range. If you are only using small and middle ring, choose a front ring a bit smaller than your middle ring to split the ratio of those two rings. Rear cassettes can be a much bigger range now - from 10tooth to 42tooth, so the loss of extreme range either end is not too great at all.

The single ring will simplify your thinking while riding and surprisingly you will NOT notice the loss of front derailleur as much as you imagine. Less complexity, less weight - more riding fun!

Extra tips (depends how much you want to spend):
You may need a new crankset.
Have a look at a Narrow-Wide front chain ring - it will help eliminate chain drop.
You may need a new rear derailleur if you want a very large rear cog on the cassette, such as the 42tooth.

you can also just increase the range on your current 3x10 when you convert it to a 1x10.

option 1 - (relatively cheap) remove a central (mid range... say 17T) cog on your current rear cassette and add a nice 40 or 42T rear cog underneath it at the back. (maintaining the current 10 speeds) The e*thirteen EX cog also includes a longer "B tension" adjuster screw for your rear deraileur to help it make the reach. (but check with your local store as not every system will be compatible)

option 2 - (expensive) fit a wide range e*thirteen TRS 10 speed cassette.
The good - it will give you a massive 9-42T rear range and best of all, it works with your current 10 speed (RH) shifter and (probably) your existing rear deraileur.
The bad - it requires that you have a SRAM "XD driver" on the rear hub. (which may or may not be a) cheap and b) easy on your existing rear hub.

in either case... scblack's suggestion of fitting one of the newer narrow wide front chainrings will help a lot.

Hmm seems a lot of effort for a small reward given I have the range I want now. I wonder how easy it would be to go from 3x to 2x...

I bought myself a Downhill bike last week. 2012 Giant Glory for $1000. Took it out to some local DH tracks on the weekend, took on a few features that I wouldn't have even looked at without that bike. Great fun!

Nope. Just hanging upside down in the shed.

I got over carting push-bikes around long ago. Much more trouble than they're worth.

If you really want to see the country-side, get one with an engine.... ;D

OK decision time, 140 or 160 mm travel? Help me decide. I'm not a hard core downhill rider, preference is more for endure and cross country...

Is it an addition to something else or one bike to do everything? The 160mm is going to be more effort pedalling up hill, but will probably nail the downs. If its one bike  to do it all, I'd go for the 140mm travel.

Don't know the Canyon brand, have owned 2 x Merida, 2 x Scott, 2 x Giant, 1 x Norco and 1 x Avanti - yes I am seeking help for my addiction...

For the money I'd lean towards a 2016 Giant Trance Advanced or Trek Remedy 8/9. They are usually clearing them out around now to make way for 2017 model

Less is more for cross country, I would go 140 tops and probably be looking at 120.

Thanks, I was leaning toward the 140 until I saw the price on the 160. The 160 has a lever 'shapeshifter' that can change the geometry from 160 to 130 on the fly...

So has the new Trek Remedy. All bikes seem to be getting slacker head angles each year too.

We are back into the bikes again this year, bought a couple of base model FELT 70 29ers, enjoying the ride on them very much and the hyd. discs are magnificient, wouldn't/couldn't ride again w/o 'em !

Finding the bigger dia. 29er rubber rolls over track obstacles like rocks, sticks, limbs etc better than the long list of 26" MTB's in the past.

What are the fav wheel size these days for a mix of occasional (enroute to bush) bitumen, bush track and a "small" bit of single track thru the MTB bike areas, ie Blores Hill near Heyfield.

Also, see talk of dual suspension and "FLOAT UP TOUGH CLIMBS" on the Trance page, always thought the back suspension lost some power on uphill.   Is that not the case with the latest duals. ?

Above all - enjoying the outdoors and the exercise !

Will put up a pic. of the stable (most of it) new and old shortly.

Missing is a 1991 Giant CFM3 Carbon frame 26", did thousands of K's on that bike back in the day  ;D

Not big buck bikes, but serviceable and in good order for trouble free use- The old NORCO has been a great bike, been trying to sell it as wanting to stay of roads, can't hardly give it away, they have got cheap, getting a little fired on the idea of putting the SPD's back on it and making a quick(er) mile or two on the black stuff, the other is my FELT 29er, very happy with it, the orange 26" is built like a tank, for grandsons when they visit, interesting ride with the fork angle -

These two, 29er is Mrs's FELT 29er, same specs as mine, lady sprung seat  ;D and the little 24" blue bike is another grandson visit machine, we have some good bush wanders from home -
