Canvas Dog Beds?
« on: April 22, 2012, 06:30:17 PM »
Hi Swaggers,

As one of my favourite threads is the Dog Photos ... I know a lot of you have fur babies.  What do you use to keep your fur baby comfortable when camping?

I was thinking canvas dog bed covers that go over 50mm foam and zip up, but I've gotten a few quotes that have shocked me quite severely!!!  I'm looking at 1mtr squared ... quotes starting from $160 each (without foam) ... and I need 3.  ???  Is this a realistic price?  Keep in mind this is the cheapest I've found in my local area to date.

I'm not interested in kennels or beds off the ground, as we need to store them in the dog box during the drive to and from camps.  It's easier if they are sitting on them in transit so we don't have to put a lining in the box (dual purpose).  Just a pillow type or suitcase type (raised sides) with foam.  We would much prefer canvas for it's water resistant qualities.  We use the shade cloth style at home and they pick up mud, bugs, water, so are not suitable for what we require when camping (although we have been using them).

Where have you gotten yours from and how much did it cost you?  Can you help me with ideas?

Kit_e

This is what I'd like ... in canvas

This is what I'd settle for ... in canvas ... and I have my own dog.

Not canvas, but washable & cheap enough.
I recently bought a 'bed' for my dog from kmart for $12. One side's like a polar fleece, & not sure what the 'ground' side is - not a materialoligist sorry  ;D

Thanks George ... I looked at those foot warming models (pugs) ... thought I'd go for the whole body warming model instead (collie / cattle x / rottweiller) ... they sleep on the floor of our Aussie Swag through the night, but the collie has arthritus and needs some comfort now and the rottie is coming up to 8 so will need the same shortly.  Wanted something durable and waterproof.

Besides, I doubt the Ultimate would fit in either the dog box or the Aussie Swag ...  ;D

I've just ordered one from Catch of the Day but it's cotton, not canvas - might still be OK. From memory it's about a metre by 600mm. I haven't got it yet so can't vouch for the quality. It was $50 incl del.

Have a look on www.caribuhorsewear.com.au they have 3 different sorts we got 2 for inside at home of the warrago range took the dogs a bit to use them as they had mesh ones before and seemed not too like the noise or how the air would stay in for a bit but they are using them more now.  We have a roll of canvas and carpet that stays in camper and we put blanket on for camping depending on where we going and how far but would take these beds.  Very easy to deal with I just emailed them and asked questions very helpful.  I filled them with hobbyfill.

I was going to suggest getting onto someone who is sewing canvas horse rugs, get them to do up a cover to your size, then get to Spotlight to pick up the filling of your choice.

Thanks heaps for those suggestions.   ;D  I am now thinking outside the square and have a picture to show exactly what I mean.

Gutters, I've seen the ones at InFront ... going to have to call them as the pictures are really small and thus non-descriptive (well for me).  I like the price of them.  They mention a "cut size", so not sure what size they might end up once sewn.

Nay-DMAX, those ones at CaribuHorseWear ... exactly what I'm after.   :cup:  Says the bottom and top only are waterproof ... not the sides?  Seems a bit silly.  I'll have to call them.  Excellent price if they are in fact canvas ... it mentions ripstop but that's as far as it goes ... doesn't actually mention 'canvas' ... but they are on the Sunny Coast, so not too far away for a recon prior to camping.

Duchess, that's a brilliant idea.  I have a horsey friend, so I'm sure she'd know someone who can help me ... or know someone who would know someone who would know ...  LOL!

Looking at mine now I would be surprised if the sides weren't water proof but best to find out. Usually if we are away the dogs are on the inside camper floor then we know where they are and that other dogs cant get at them.  They have an inner pillow so can take it all apart to wash if required.  I know they are not square and I wanted square also but we got the large size and we have a blue heeler/ridgeback X and a red heeler staffy X and we got the same size for each then it doesnt matter which bed they get on.  If they are close to you even better to be able to see them first.  The other thing for water proofing is if you have the room then like we take already a small roll of canvas under the beds might help too.  We just roll it small and tie off with hay band.  Hope you find what you are after.

Okay,  so they aren't canvas, but they are waterproof.  I have ordered 3 of the Warrago XL and they should be here by weeks end.   ;D  Should the outer cover get wet, we can simply remove and dry them off, with no wet doggie smell.  Very happy so far.  Will let you know what they are like when they arrive.

Nay-DMAX ... thank you so much!   :-*  At $40 each you simply can't do better.

So glad I hope you are happy with them when we first started using ours I filled them a fair bit and found the air staying in bit of problem I just opened the zip on each pillow a small amount seemed to fix it and they are probably at a point where I could put a bit more fill in now.  LOL at the photo (but have my own dog) at least if you supply your own dog you get just what you want.  Delivery for mine to Vic was very fast and like they send email with postal update.

My dog used to share the swag with me.

... until one night he got bored and chewed a small hole in the sleeping bag, then entertained himself pulling all that white fluffy stuff out of the hole.

I woke up next morning with my top 1/2 freezing and what looked like snow all around me ???.

So with that thought, how about a dog swag?

Where is the dog photo thread  ???
When we showed Buzz and Gillie thier beds they just looked at us like we were idiots and promptly started crying and whining until we put them on the bed with us.
Guess we should not have allowed them on the bed at home  ;D
Buzz

Gillie

Gillie seeing turtles for the first time. He stared for over an hour.

Now we have Harry who is a bit big for the bed.
Harry

He sleeps on the floor on his bed when the air con is going in the bedroom.
When the air con is not going and the bedroom door is open he sneaks off his bed when we fall asleep, goes into the lounge and gets on the couch  >:D
Hopefully when he goes on his first camping trip he will just settle onto his bed...
Bill and Morag
P.S It is a dog thread (sort of) so I had to put thier pictures up...

Our council uses these at the dog pound.  Havent had one damaged in 18mths of use.  Wipe clean, stacks flat.

Right HERE Bill & Morag.  You can now add pictures of your pooches to the Official Dog Thread!

No dog sleeps on a bed or couch in my house ... because I'm The Pack Leader ... and they just aren't!   ;D  I'm sure my youngest gets on the bed whilst I'm asleep (tell tale hairs say it's true), but she's smart enough to be off it when I awaken ... or all Hell would Break Loose!  Now to catch her in the act ... so I can reinforce my Pack Leadership.  ;D

No worries NatGav,

With any luck will have them Thursday, as we are camping for 2 nights leaving Friday.  Then I can give you a 'how they went trip report', otherwise not for another fortnight.  Postage for all 3 cost $13 via Aust.Post which is pretty reasonable.  Some others wanted $85 postage for 3 smaller beds (but it was registered).  If they don't work out, at least I won't have to use fishing line to sew them back together again like I'm doing with the bottom half of the shade cloth pillows of late *angrily looks at a certain black and white dog*.

Shucks   :-*  I love it when you lot think of me.  *How Sweet*

Well they arrived Tuesday afternoon, but I couldn't get them till Thursday.  I had an old foam mattress (camping in a previous life) which I cut in half and then to size and it worked out perfectly for them.  They fitted well into the Dog Box, but BF put old pillows in his one and that just made things lumpy in the DB, so he's been converted to the foam side.

They were as waterproof as stated ... because it rained nearly all weekend.   ;D  Yes we backed up to the camper and that's enough said about that!!

Downside was they were a bit noisy as the rip-stop top wasn't grippy enough for scratching those hard to reach places (as you need to do at night) and so many attempts would need to be made to get the job done (you know how it is) ... and the BF is a very light sleeper that gets annoyed at the merest hint of a sound (eg: bugs chiriping / birds chiriping / dogs shuffling about on beds / pillow being folded over ears / cows mooing on another continent) ... so some of us (namely me) kept getting woken up by BF telling everyone to 'Shut Up' and stomping about on the bed (yes it can be done horizontally trust me) ... which I rather hoped he would do ... and said so.

But other than that ... complete sucess!   :cup:
