V8's @ Bathurst 2012 , camping
« on: April 17, 2012, 11:26:43 PM »
Hi all,
we have our same campsites on top of the mountain again this year and a couple extras close by
just looking on the website now http://user.v8supercarevents.com.au/pages/?ParentPageID=1&PageID=4
and noticed that any tickets not rebooked by existing ticket holders went on sale to the public at midday today,
all campgrounds are now booked out - less than 12 hours,
the V8's and camping are both good pastimes - mix them together for what promises to be a great week,
two years ago we took the V8 lawnmower over "for demonstration purposes only",
something else special in the build at the moment for the cold nights
any other swaggers from here make the trek each year?

I usually camp on the mountain every year with about 20 mates but have missed the last few due to work. Usually head up on Wednesdays. It's always an awesome week up there.
As you know used to be pretty wild back in the day until they put a stop to it in 2000.
Good times. We also had a v8 lawnmower for a few years in the early 00's, and we made the inside cover of the picture mag  grinding the roof of our LJ torana ;D in 99, which later met its fate in the bullring.

They sold out in 33 minutes. I was online as soon as they went on sale. There was only about 30 sites left down the bottom of the mountain.
Luckily I got a site in the chase campground.
I camped in max Cameron in 2010 but let that site go for 2011 - I think with the popularity of the V8s, I will be holding onto this site.
Can not wait!

I have been camping thier twice i thought the first time was a one off but the second was the same

I have never been more ashamed to be associated with the same species as the behaviour that i saw go on that weekend. To quote from the Mos Eisly cantina "you will never find a more wretched hive of villany and scum"
I would never take my partner there, and i f i had kids i would never take them there.

I find it a shame that an iconic event is turned into Australias largest bogun fest compared to other motorsport events it is a joke

I was there in 2010 and found the behavior of the other campers a lot better than I expected.
Like all campsited it all depends on the neighbors.
Sure there was a lot of yahoos - but it is a motor race not a ballet!

If you expect it to be a little rowdy then you are not surprised when it is - I just use ear plugs to sleep and I get a great sleep.

Went last year, go every 4 years and camp in the chase campgrounds.
Awesome fun, didnt see any real over the top behaviour and took my wife there as well.
Only problem was the bloody mud, was that bad we went and got 3 trailer loads of wood chips for the ground.
Next year will be hardfloor camper territory!!!!

i go every year,
i now have 3 campsites in the Paddock camp ground. :)

last year was the worst for a while , the weather was just crap , and the ground was so wet and muddy.

But it will not stop me going again and again.  i love the sport. this year is the first with my Camper Trailer.
so i am REALLY looking forward to it.

maybe we need to have a swaggers meet at the mountain ?

Sure is, just adds to the fun and made one young bloke in an old landy and a snatch strap fairly wealthy

This is what it looked like when i got there, sat back and watched all the fun

Thanks macca. I camped there in 2010 (looked familiar). It seemed to be a good spot. Got a site in the chase campgrounds this year.
I liked max Cameron because at 1am it was not a long " sober up b4 bed" walk to the main straight pit lane area. That 5 minuate walk usually took 2 hours. The memories.
After a few days and nights there I realized I am not 20 anymore.

Maybe a MYSWAG get together may be in order - as previously mentioned.

I remember one year in the nineties I roughed it and went corporate ;D
I parked just next to the track in a paddock. There were probably 500 cars parked in that section. Halfway through the race it pelted and didn't stop. Every car had to be towed out by a tractor except for a few 4rbies. I thInk it was about ten o'clock when I finally got out  :4x4:

Yeah, they are making it hard to have the "sober up walk" along pit straight in the wee hours now, they have put more fences and gates up , still doable though

Maybe catch up for a beer at the XXXX bar, we seem to get stuck there for some reason on Saturday arvo, sure empties the wallet pretty quick though, I'm up for a catch up maybe the boys from the bottom could catch the bus up the top and meet up with the boys up there, I'm easy

It was like that on the Thursday going in BD, but with no tractor or any officals to help out, if it wasn't for a few guys in their fourbys there would have been a lot of pi$$ed off punters, with their cars sitting on the sills with a van on the back, we ended up going up the backroad and cutting the fence down at least they could come in down hill

We used to have 6 campsites on the mountain, sort of down the back of the mountain half way between the two toilet blocks.  Used to head up Monday before the race, fence of a section for us opposite the big screen near the last bend before skyline and stay until the Monday after the race.  Were some good times.  It certainly toned down over the years and I believe it is now a family friendly environment.

we do the same at Reid park which is just before skyline and also have about six sites on  burnout boulevard, right on the corner. There was no way a car was allowed to go through without turning the wheels ;D

Stayed at the top, stayed at the bottom, stayed off site, driven up in a bus for the top ten shoot out/ saturday and watched it on a big screen on Sunday. All I will say is that the top was fun except for the highway copper who was staying with us who decided to bring hash cookies along. bottom is great for action on Saturday

All in all it has always been a great weekend.
Need to get the backside into gear and get out camping

Motorsports are something VERY close to my heart.
i go to the 1000 each year, but i go for the racing, not to say i dont like a few drinks and a good time. but it costs me a lot of $$ and time to get there each year. so i might as well enjoy why i go !

here are a couple of pics of my set ups for the past 2 years.
both pics are taken LONG before the storm of people , i was trying to find a pic i have taken from the same place as the first picture, but on the Thursday or Friday,  you cannot see one patch of green in that picture  ;D

first pic is from 2 years ago, with my tent and tarp set up

2nd is from last year, mum and dad joined my kids and I,  they came with their caravan.
this was taken on the Tuesday after we had almost finished set up, and before it rained for 30 day and 30 nights.
the rain did make it harder to enjoy, but we still had a ball !
long way to drive from Brisbane to not have a good time.  lol

i will be back in my single spot this year ( picture 1 ) with my CAMPER TRAILER  ;D ;D ;D and my other 2 sites i have "let" out for the event. (no scalping here, just what it cost me to purchase the sites )

if you have never been to the mountain for the 1000, you MUST add it to your bucket list.
yes it will be noisy,  no you will not get a lot of sleep for the week.
but you will have a GREAT time and i am sure meet some new friends.

as for taking kids. i have taken mine for the past 2 years, camping in the paddock campground. i have had not one bit of trouble with either me or my kids. plenty of families in this campground so its pretty good.

Hope to catch up with some of you at this years event :)
