Cooper S/t's chipping

G'day folks I have 265/75/16's on my Gu and the We have travelled 2,000kms and have noticed the side edges starting to chip prett bad to the point we are losing "chunks" off the edges. Ona recent trip we had another gu with bridgestones and the other with Mickey t's. Their tyres had no issues at all. We all had lowered pressures, mine were 26lb. This is our first set of Coopers and am currently not impressed with this at all. We await the local Rep to inspect and make a decision as to where we go from here and will keep you all informed.

In my 16 years of 4wdriving i have never had this problem before, anyone else had the same problem?

ST or ST/C? the C is supposed to have been more chip resistant.

Search over on Exploroz, its very common with them dating back 2005 or earlier..

Search Google for dozens of threads on it.

I have had two sets of ST's and never had a problem, I give them a bit of hard work at times. I would be going back to the supplier and asking why.

I had Coopers STs on the R51 and the Surf, both had similar issues.
Lugs were missing and they wore pretty hard. On the Surf the fronts were pretty down in mm and they only had done 35,000 kms. Most of it hard work, dirt roads etc.
I will not get them for the Lexus. Instead I will buy he Mickey Thompsons MTZ.

Cooper st's are renowned for it, I have had two sets with similar problems and now onto the ST maxx but haven't done enough hard work with them to see if they are the same.
Have tried Mickey Thompsons which are great offroad but wore very quickly on the small amount of black top that I did.

We;ve had st's on the prado now for about 65 000 km and havent had an issue with them but lately I've noticed the side walls just starting to hair line crack. Those with St maxx's how do find them on your vehicle for wear and performance i'm looking to get them next?

I had the exact same problem but with the ATRs, Chipping, cracking and they wouldnt grip in the wet, absolute junk, no wonder they advertise so much.

I have had the LT version of the ST's on my Pathfinder and now on the 100 series.   The Pathy got a bit of a hard time in the High Country and took some chunks off the lugs - as expected on the rocks.   They were still going strong last I saw with about 55,000 k's on them at around 4 years old.   I know they did at least another 40,000 k's (on road) and were still legal when my mate sold it.

I've had the same (bigger size) on the 100 series now for about 3 years.   It's done some big trips, and plenty of playing in the High Country and are in even better nick than the older ones.   Much less chipping.

Is it the comparison between the passenger version and the LT version?   I know another mate had the pass. version and he kept breaking them and called them rubbish as well.

I'm happy with mine and will be looking at the Maxx in the future depending on reports.

Awating the rep to inspect them before we proceed any further. which won't happen until after Anzac Day.  Mickey T's are part of the same company. the S/t Maxx's certainly look and feel more robust but early days to really give any true indication. A mate has a set on his and I'm impressed at first glance at them.

Well some feedback and there is recognition that there is a problem and have been offered a pro rata claim for what i paid at the time. I know of 2 other vehicles having the same issue at the moment. To be fair they have been good to deal with. The saga continues!

I thought they'd overcome this problem (which has been around for quite a while) with a new rubber formula? Guess not.  Pretty poor for the price huh? Better luck next time.

x 2. I have used Coopers for years (Work always put them on) and found that they were hard to keep balanced. My 80 series came with 6 new cooper STT's ($2100) fitted (same size as yours) and I did 2 offroad trips in them with lowered pressure and the lugs started to peel away from the carcass. My tyre man (sells coopers) said he had heaps coming in with the same issue. He believes the new carcass is too hard and does not flex enough.

I sold them last week on ebay ($1200) with 90% tread on them (7000km only). I have now fitted BFG AT's.

I had Cooper ST's on the Disco and the compound became really hard over time to the point where they were downright dangerous in the wet. Sure they offer high milage guarantees but thats because they stop wearing after a while as they become so hard. I had to change them with about 60% tread after several near misses when trying to pull up when the road was wet.
I've shifted to BFG's now and no problems since.

I too have STs. some minor minor chipping but nothing more than i hace seen come from my old toyos.

And i give this thing of mine a real hard time. Nasty in the wet? na not realy. i hav do change my driving habbits however its the wet...and ya do that....

I was under the impression that it had been resolved as well but it appears it has not. Thanks for the feedback so far fellas :cup:

We too have Cooper ST's on our 120 Prado I am more than happy with ours as we have over 86,000k's on them, they are also suffering minor chipping but I'm not surprised as they have taken us over some very ordinary terrain.
The only problem we have had is when we pierced a side wall on a trip up around the daintree when they only had 16,000k's >:(

Yeh thats a bugger! We shagged a tyre with less than 1500kms on it taking the dog fence track from the breakaways back to Coober Pedy, Cost of a BFG A/T there was $280.00 of which they had none in stock. Alice Springs price  $430.00!!!!!

I bought a set of 5 Copper St's on my Hilux 265/70R16,not LT. Two weeks later I staked the sidewall in sand dunes, this more my fualt cause I had dropped my tyre pressure. Went to get a replacement and found out they had dicontinuted that size and couldn't get another one in Oz. .... I was think of getting STT's in 265/75R16, but after some research. I went for Micke Thompson MTZ.

Cooper advertise high milage and warrenty on the tyres, but it you have an issue with the tyre in the first place why would you want them again.......It's like when a mechanic stuff something up on your car and you go back to them about it, so they offer you the next service for free? They should offer a refund on they current work done, which then give you the option to go back to them if you want.

i have had ST'S on my 100series for the last 4 years 90,000k and need replacement real happy with them very little chipping they did get a flow lamination on the side wall at 25k's taken back to the dealer told it wont alter the construction of the tyre they have traveled over some rough country am looking at st maxxs soon

Just run from Coober to Maree to Birdsville to Windorah - no probs but did spike one which now looks a little worse for wear. They have 35k on them now a look fine

Quite obviously there are still issues with them and I'll never put another set on. The new Maxx's certainly look the goods and we'll keep a close eye on them. I have to admit the whole process was kept to a professional level with all parties being good to deal with in this instance! FYI my tread depth was down to 8mm but only travelled 22,000kms at the time of inspection and we were offered a 70% rebate on another set of new tyres.

FYI ... A few people in our camping group have Coopers and several have had them shred at high speeds (HWY mootring at 100kph).  Possibley related to the chipping?  Not sure.
