Opinions ....Right or Wrong !!!
« on: February 15, 2012, 03:54:24 PM »
Dictionary meaning of opinion " A belief or judgement that rests on grounds insufficient to produce complete certainty"

Yes we all have opinions on most things in life and that is a great thing but sometimes we like to push our opinions a little too far. This is becoming more evident lately.

The great thing about my swag is that we can post our opinions on topics we find of interest and to let other members know that. But let's step back and think sometimes before we post our thoughts as
recently we have seen some topics get a little bit heated. ( it's expected in the electrical section )

Being passionate about a certain topic can sometimes be taken the wrong way so let's give a little here and there.

We all know my opinions are right anyway. ;D

Back to my beer

Good topic ...

I have always said the biggest problem with emails and forums is that people can just blurt out whatever they are thinking at the time , and whammo , there it is in writing !

And then 5 minutes later , they think , that's not what I meant , while a dozen people have given them a serve for what they said , and started a fight .

I think just hitting preview each time something is typed would be a start ... read it back and see if that's how you want to be heard . Bear in mind there is no expression in words , so you could still be mistaken on how you deliver a comment .

I still see so many typing errors , meaning not many bother with the preview option ....

I hate it when someone says " It's Black " , and you see an immediate short , sharp ,  " No it's white ! "
Rather than " I understand why you say it's black , but here's why I think it's white . Maybe we can agree , it's grey "

I have heard a few cases where businesses and companies are now suing over comments made on the internet , so we all must be careful at that extreme end of the words posted .

I think this forum is by far the best I have ever seen . And I hope it stays that way .....

( just my opinion , and not the opinion of anyone else that may possibly share my opinion at the time )

Don't forget we are in the world of mobile internet and where the preview button and spell check is a simple click on the mouse with a computer, it can be a pain in the part that you sit on with a mobile...and then there is predictive text that just wants to change what you typed because it can...

well thats my opinion and chances are not the opinion of the minister of opinions who is due home soon

PS this is my favourite forum mostly due to the great banter that goes on from within it, its more relaxed and fun compared to most

In my "opinion" this thread just needs some 6 B & S............. ;D

Nah just kidding.
I agree, opinions are just that, and perhaps we need to consider the person on the other end sometimes more often.

I'm guilty, but this post is a reminder......

Hey Mark

Good point.  I am guilty of that sometimes.  I think it comes down to ones personality and sometimes what they do for a crust.  I
'discuss'  8) points of law for half the day most days and its a bit hard to switch off when you get home and log on.  Sometimes I will read what I wrote a few hours later and wish for a time machine.   ;D

This may be a good opportunity to say so solly to anyone I've pee'd off lately.

Agree with OP, can understand and admire people's passion, but it does sometimes read a bit like flogging a dead horse.
At the same time I really enjoy the posts from so many members here that work in relevant industries, and share their knowledge so freely.  Certainly helps the punters like myself save a buck or two, and get out there and enjoy doing what we all love and have in common.  Camping...

I actually wrote this a while ago, seems appropriate to post it here.

The myswag forum has been a quality source of knowledge and entertainment over many years. The forum’s popularity is demonstrated by the many new members every day. I have met many members and made some lifelong friends from the forum. I admire Brett and the mod/admin team for the effort they put in of their own time and expense to keep the forum running.

The discussions on myswag are generally respectful and each member is allowed to share their opinion right or wrong. The forum has worked well with this method of self-censorship and light touch moderation. I believe it is this fundamental reason why myswag has gained members whilst other forums have lost members.

As human beings we’re not all the same, we come from many different professions and socioeconomic backgrounds. Fostering these differences is what a forum is about. As in life, on myswag you don’t have to agree with everything a member says however you do have to respect the entitlement of that member to state their opinion.

When we communicate over 80% of the conversation is visual, therefore on forums we’re only consuming less than 20% of the conversation. Our ability to convey our opinion is diminished and may sometimes be misconstrued which can in turn lead to a negative perception of that member.

This brings me to my point, the free and organic nature of the forum is being eroded by what I believe are simple misunderstandings. For example, over the last few months there have been posts deleted without the courtesy of a PM to let the author know why. In my opinion there have also been cases of tall poppy syndrome. Not to mention the constant requests to move the trip reports into the trips section so you have to be a member to view them.

We’re all passionate myswag members and none of us want to see myswag travel down the path of many other forums that have gone before it. Let’s get back to the main purpose of the forum, go camping and share our stories!

Good thread McGirr.................. was starting to think nobody else was noticing the big opinions and negativity thats been creeping in of late...........

Like I've said before, I like alot of others come hear cause it's a nice place to visit, have a bit of a laugh, and find info on whatever it is I'm chasing............. Oh and i stay away from the electrical section............ i still have trouble understanding the complexities of how a 6v Dolphin Torch works........

Keep smiling!

The other problem with the written word is there is no way to interpret the intent or tone of some words leading to misunderstandings.
I do try to be constructive in my comments and helpful but on another forum was accused of slagging off a member (my whole conversation via PM to the member not public open forum)
Anyway I like this forum and value the input from others.

I'm just glad that you all understand and accept that I have boobs and an opinion ... makes me feel so much better about myself and this forum.   >:D   ;D  I'm also glad that no-one has egg'd my house, car or camper or banned me from this site due to my opinion.

On a more serious note:  I'm glad that I'm allowed to participate, that some people value my imput, and I've inspired a few people to get out there and have some fun whilst camping with the family and friends and the fur kids as well.  Makes me feel like I've had a meaningful participation.  It's also really nice to think that some people share my whacky sense of humour and I give them a good laugh on occassion.

I also love the way members will help you with anything knowledge wise and also product wise.  It's a marvelous thing to know that if I just don't get it, someone here will give me the time of day to understand what ever it is.

Mostly I enjoy the banter, Speewa, the trip reports and the helpful nature of those involved.  It's a wonderful thing happening here.

MySwag's Mission Accomplished I'd say.   :cup:

I love that we can see differing opinions being freely expressed here. I've just experienced on another forum the complete opposite to this and am currently questioning my membership there, as it seems that if you express a differing opinion to the status quo, then you're the one who is wrong for that. That certainly isn't what I experience on Myswag...

Incorrect or no punctuation can really screw up your message e.g.

Bill said Bob was a wacka. (so Bob must be a wacka)

Insert 2 commas and we have;

Bill, said Bob, was a wacka. (now who's the wacka)

first post I have added to in a couple of months.  Got tired of a certain person wanting to try and prove something.  So figured rather than give any input I would simply read others input.  We all have our opinions on different things, but sometimes it is also important to realise that some of us have expertise in areas, doesnt mean we are always right, but it does mean that we have sufficient proof to show why the current belief is held.
In a word it comes down to no matter how strong your belief is held, it is important to respect the beliefs of others and accept people have the RIGHT to their own opinions, however it is also equally important to recognise that if you believe in an opinion it doesnt mean you ARE right.  I.e. a Racist, has a right to believe as they do, even if everyone else around them knows that they are wrong in their belief, why try and argue with a person who is sure their belief is right, you simply give them the opportunity to voice their hate, let that topic alone and let it fade into obscurity.
