Vans "OFFROAD" capabilties
« on: January 26, 2012, 10:53:53 AM »
Hi All,

Would like some helpful info about the real offroad capabilities of the vans such as Jayco, Coromal, Goldstream.
Where has these vans been towed in and out of?
Still up for consideration as I have had total disc replacement surgery on my lower back.
But I will sacrifice comfort if it won't get me to where I want to go.

Happy Australia Day,
Stay safe,
Mayney.

As per a previous post about the subject, I have taken my Jayco outback through most of the main centre tracks.
Oodnadatta, Strezlecki, Finke, Plenty, Mereenie loop, Birdsville, etc etc......
Had a few small hiccups such as a screw or two coming undone on the cupboard latches, but quickly fixed by applying a small amount of silicone and rescrewing.
A friend with a flamingo had his fridge door open, but we suspect it wasn't shut properly to begin with.

I did do a lot of preparation though.
Sealed all joins underneath with sikaflex, put on some stone guards and replaced rivets in clamps with stainless nuts and bolts.
We also had a serious stoneguard as anyone who goes out there will tell you, the stones give your trailer a hell of a hammering!!!!!!!!!!!

As far as chassis strength etc goes..........Take a look at the size of the thing. I doubt you'll break it.
Suspension wasn't a problem as long as you pay attention to tyre pressure and speed. Don't try to drive the Birdsville track at the same speed as the Stuart Hwy..........
Our trailer has done a heck of a lot of off road stuff and quite a bit in low range too and we've never done any damage or had any problems.
Clocked up over 20,000 k's at least.

Probably the worst we drove was actually the road into Lake Eyre from William Creek. It was shocking at the time we drove it. We just slowed down a bit and drove carefully.
It was rough and uncomfortable in the patrol but the trailer went fine. Didn't break a bottle or an egg....... :D
Had a sore posterior though  ;D

Hopefully helped,
Brian

I agree with Brian as a lot people will complain about about the Jayco and it's off road manners and the problems, but the only problem I've encounter was the fridge opening and my fix was to put child locks onto the fridge and have never had a problem with it occurring since.

Thanx guys,

Has anyone taken them on beach tracks with soft sand or sandy hills to climb? Places such as Fraser Island or Moreton Bay?

Those beach locations would be the easiest of terrain for the Jayco-type campers I think. Just lower the tyre pressure all around and pick your route.

From my reading and after having had a good look at a Jayco recently I'd day the limiting factor would be size on narrow tracks, and ramp over/exit angle on creek crossings. Looks like you can go most places, but perhaps more carefully than with some other camper types.

Hi Mayney, we have a Jayco outback Hawk with Simplicity independent suspension. Happy to report that we had a good trip driving across the island from Wangoolbla creek to Eurong and then up to Cathedral beach last June. The outback has good clearance and the independent suspension allows a clear 'tunnel' under the camper when driving in deep ruts. I would recommend a 16" wheel upgrade for more clearance and greater tyre bagging effect when dropping the tyre pressures for sand driving.
Heading back to Fraser again next July, can't wait.
  Macca.

Came across a Jayco camper on the way to the cape a few years ago.  Their glass cover on top of the stove had shattered from all the corrugations.  Something to be aware of.
